Let’s see… Tough weekend, one of the most disappointing games I’ve ever been involved in in my entire life. It just seemed like things didn’t go well for us. It was just a disappointing game. The thing that’s most disappointing about it is after watching the film, it’s hard to tie down exactly what particular player, or what particular defense is the problem. I think everybody on our defense and on our team made mistakes at some point throughout the game. A lot of time we can live through some mistakes and other teams don’t capitalize on them, but the Chargers definitely capitalized on every opportunity we gave them, and we didn’t make any opportunities for ourselves. It was really disappointing.
I personally have a tremendous amount of faith and confidence in the players and coaches that are here. It’s a very young season, so while we’re not happy with where we are, there’s nothing we can do about that. We came in today, and we’re going to come in tomorrow and work really hard and try to improve, just be more sound and more consistent, which is where I think most of our problems are — consistency.
I’m not sure it’s big enough yet to be a cliché, but people say, “In times like this you really find out about a person’s character,” or in our case, the character of a team, and I definitely would have to agree. I think that’s the same in life. I remember in college or maybe it was high school, I saw an NFL Films documentary thing with Steve Young on it, and I remember he said that, “Football is a microcosm of life.” I wholeheartedly agree with that, and this is a great opportunity for the players on this team and myself in particular to show character, show what we’re made of, and bounce back and maintain the faith in our system and each other, and just play as well as we know we can.
Personally, I had somewhat of a disappointing start to my season, with an injury in the second quarter of the first game, missing a few games, and playing in the last two games but being kind of nonexistent. It’s just not what I’m used to at any level of my career. At this point I consider myself, I guess it would be a lieutenant, maybe, because John Lynch and Champ Bailey and Jay Cutler and those guys are captains, and I feel like I’m one of the next guys in command. I feel as though that’s as important as a leader, whether primary or secondary on this team, to set that character example, which I definitely will do. One of the luxuries of not being one of the primary leaders on this team is that I really need to focus on my own game and just improve. Like I said before, it’s not something I’m used to, just being a non-factor throughout five games. There were two games I didn’t play in, the first game I only played a quarter, and the last two games I played in were like I wasn’t out there. So I have to say that I’m pretty disappointed in myself and in this team so far, but I’m also extremely optimistic about the future.
I haven’t heard exactly what Brandon Marshall said yet, but I know it kind of created a little backlash from Denver and Broncos fans in general. I dealt with it a little bit on my radio show last night, and from what I’ve heard, he was voicing his opinion and kind of just asking for the support of the fans. I think it kind of got misconstrued, and with the emotions involved right after a game, sometimes it’s hard to articulate exactly how you feel. But I know Brandon and everyone in this locker room really appreciate our fans and love having them there. We also appreciate the support that they provide for us in the good times and the bad, because we will turn it around and we are going to be better. We look forward to having all the fans cheering at our games till the very end and not booing or leaving early. It’s our responsibility to give you a product that you can appreciate as much as it is the fans’ responsibility to stay behind their team.
One thing I’m looking forward to this week, and I look forward to it every week, is Tuesdays at the Boys and Girls Club. The last couple weeks I’ve been going on Tuesdays and Fridays, which is great just to be around the kids. One of the not-so-great things about going down there is that the kids are blunt. I’m sure anybody who has been around kids for an extended period of time knows that they say exactly how they feel and exactly what’s on their mind, and don’t hold anything back. So I’m ready to handle all the questions like, “Why did you lose?” which has to be the worst question anyone’s ever asked. Well, maybe not the worst, because you always tell kids that there’s no such thing as a bad question. But it’s one of the most difficult questions to answer. There’s really no answer, other than, “They beat us.” Then it’s, “Why did you let them beat you?” Those type of questions are always tough to deal with. And then you always get the point, “Hey, you guys lost this weekend!” as if I wasn’t there.
But I really enjoy being around the kids. It’s great, they don’t hide anything and everything is in the open when you’re dealing with kids, which is one of the great things about going down there. They let you know exactly what they see. There’s no other agendas, and they’ll humble you in a second as soon as you start winning and feeling too good about yourself. Kids will bring you back down to earth in sometimes the harshest way possible. But I really enjoy going down there and answering the questions. I honestly try to use that as a way to teach how to deal with a loss. A lot of these kids participate in sports, and even if they don’t participate in sports, they’re going to have some type of setback in life at some point, so that’s what I use to motivate myself in how to handle it, is that they’re watching me and they want to see how I handle it when somebody confronts me. The teenage boys who play high school football, every week that we lose they come in and say, “Oh, I could have done this, I could have done that. You need to let me play. I need to come practice with you guys.” So I try to handle it as gracefully as possible and hopefully they learn from my example.
I think Brian Clark said he’s coming again, which would be his second trip to the writing class. They really love him. He had a hit poem last time about chicken. We ended it with his poem, he was the last to share, which was funny because all the kids are really talented and wrote some really deep, profound poems. Then Brian closed out with a poem about how he loves chicken. It was pretty funny, and the kids have been asking for him to come back ever since, so I’m looking forward to having him there tonight.
Congratulations to the Rockies again. Keep up the good work. The Broncos are behind you 100 percent.
All Ready.

A loss by one point and a loss by thirty-eight is still a loss. There are still a lot of games left. Get the season turned around against Pittsburgh. Enjoy the bye.
Fox,
We are all still behind you! It is early in the season there is still a lot of football yet to be played! Just keep looking forward! Enjoy your bye

Domonique,
RESILIENCY is KEY! It does matter how the score of the game turned out and how the season has gone so far, but it is the Broncos team’s ability to recover and to return to the team we know and love that really matters.
As I write this, I am reminded of the movie, “Miracle on 34th Street.” Just as the people in that move “Believed” in Santa. We “BELIEVE” in the Broncos, win or lose.
I am aware that everyone wants to be a winner and nobody wants to be a loser, but in my opinion, losing makes you a better winner, because how else would you know how to appreciate winning? Use losing the game to serve as MOTIVATION to strive to do what has to be done in order to become the winner you want to be.
The children are really lucky to have you as a positive role model and by all means teach them that you win some and you lose some, but whatever happens it only matters that you tried and you gave it your all.
I hope the bye week was just what the doctor ordered for everyone and that we see things turn around for all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to respond to my e-mail. I actually responded so, if you haven’t read it by now, please do.
GOOD LUCK and GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Fox,
I just started up with the whole blogging thing and began reading some of your blogs from the past to the present. I just have one thing I’d liek to share with you about the defense right now and all the criticism surrounding it and such on Mason’s blog replies.
I believe that the defense not playing how it can has NOTHING to do with blitzing and it has NOTHING to do with Al Wilson. It has to due with the fact that EVERY SINGLE defensive player on the feild needs to want to win, and needs to work to win. We are not getting that out of all of our defenders, they obviously need to spend MORE time studying their new defensive scheme and practicing their executions in the new scheme. They also need to spend more time practicing their TACKLING, they are getting paid MORE than enough money to go out and practice tackling with dummies, run some sprints, lift, review their oppenents. This is supposed to be a JOB for them and they should be fortunate enough to be having this “job”, that I’m sure many peolple wish they had the natural talent, athleticism, height, and heart to have. And with every job comes work, and if you do not want to work then you will find it hard to stay employed and to find new jobs. And for playing football the only work you can do is to study your plays, know your executions, review your oppenents, and study the players you will be facing. You have to WANT to play football, I know for sure if I was a coach, (which I plan to try to do later in life as I’m still in college now), I would make it damn right clear to all my players that if they don’t want to put in that extra effort and don’t want to study as hard as I would as a coach, to get the hell out. I think thats exactly what Shanahan needs to do if he wants to continue to be a good coach. You can’t sign guys like Sam Adams and then give them wednesdays off, hell I wouldn’t even give the day after the game off to my players, win or lose. The day after you should be reviewing the tape and pointing out EVERY single mistake a player made and reviewing it with them until they have it down. You seriously have to want to win and right now I do not see every single player on the Broncos showing that they want to win. I don’t know if its a lack of coaching, a lack of heart, or what but I just DO NOT see that from every player right now, I see it from a good bunch but not all. And all it takes is one man to not want it, to ruin a teams chances of winning, one man can ruin it for all, you need to make sure all 11 guys out there not only love the game, but are a student of the game, have pride in themselves and their teammates, and never want to quit. Until I see that “Want” in EVERY SINGLE player, I will not be satisfied as a Bronco fan. As a head coach, Shanahan really needs to start figuering out how to spot that desire in the players he choses to draft, sign, or trade for. Because if you can’t spot that in the player then why would you ever bother with him unless you feel your confident enough that you can coach him it. But as of right now I’m not seeing it in every player at all. Sorry for the rambling but thats our biggest problem in my mind, screw the schemes, the blitzing, the play calling, it all comes down to who wants to win, who has pride in what they do and who just wants to pick up that lofty paycheck each week and go home. You strike me as a person who seems to care a lot about the game, you are able to play either saftey or corner which not many players will bother to learn both and you also blog for the fans which shows heart. I was just wondering if you could possibly let me know if you feel like what I just said makes any sense to you, as you spend the most time with the defenders. I also have a lot to say about the offense but I figuere theres no point posting it to you as you play corner / saftey.
Thank you.
Fox,
I’m not a football fan; I’m a Broncos fan. If you understand that then you know I’m cheering for you through wins or loses. Hang tough buddy.
Sincerely, Jim Kennedy
Domonique
This is my first time here, but am a lifetime fan. What I have noticed is the defence is not tackling. That is the one glaring thing that I believe has caused so many problems. It does not appear That everyone is one the same page. These are just observations I am not trying to place blame, but the whole team is not acting like a team. This past game against San Diego was just the climax of the previous 4 games. I have played on teams like that before (high school) and it is a bitch to pull everyone back together. I wish you and the rest of the team the best of luck in the rest of the season. I hope to write you in better times. I will always be a bronco fan no matter what the W’s or L’s look like. Keep your head up and don’t lose your spirit.
dom,
i agree with broncofan1018 he and i and many people believe that our defense has lost its will to win. I dont think they really care anymore and you to dom i think fame has gotten to you. If you guys think you have nothing to prove then your way off you need to prove to us the fan that you guys care as much as we care about the broncos you need to prove this to gain back the repect of the league. Everyone outside colorado is counting you out, everone thinks that they can run over this team. dom your a good footaball player and you were blessed with your athletism but show some hear im love the team but our defense doesnt care they dont want a ring. dom unless this dont change we are a weak team, i mean when i saw Ian Gold get beat on that route deep he got up smiling and i know its just a game but show some heart get fustrated get angry and make plays you guys are working as a bunch of guys doing theit own thing but you need to work as a team get your gaps cover your man and show that you care we care we spend money to go to games we buy your jerseys( i got yours dom) and we expect you guys to stop and get your heads out of your @$$3S even if you lose show some emotion just like brandon marshal. We also the fan deserve some critizism, we should never leave and we should still show our teams pride even if we are below 500.
Dom im sorry for this but this is not broncos football this is horrible football. D get your act together.
Bronco fan for life.
All ready!!!!!!!
Fox,
tough loss last week, but im still optimistic about the defense, i think its great because its obvious we have one of the most talented teams out there, and once we start to gel, and get things together, teams might overlook us. youre probably enjoying the bye week, but not having any game to look forward to, or watch, has been a change for me, im with the players, id rather play this week to get the bad taste out of my mouth…keep up the hard work and effort, i’m behind you guys all the way..it’s only a matter of time before we get it together and show our true talent…also, what should we call you when we reply? i feel wierd sayin fox, or foxy, u gotta give me a nickname…have a good bye, and good luck next week against pittsburgh, ps tell the coaches to have you cover the other teams TE…it seems like u should be out there more…
peace
-shill-
Is Selvin Young your writer???
We all make mistakes, and every team has their down falls, and dissapointing games. But no matter what happens, your fans should be behind you 100% of the time, wish I was at that game, I would do anything in order to come to a Denver game, being from Virginia it isn’t that easy, so that is a sad thing to read that fans were leaving, when there are fans out there that would DIE to come even watch 1 quarter of the game. So don’t worry about that, you guys will do better next time. Love and support will always come from your TRUE fans. So better luck this week, hope the break was good for all the coachs and players, and we can make this a come back time, and show them what we are working with. Good Luck!!!! :- )
ya, is Selvin Young the “blog master”????????? lol
oh wait, is Brian Clark the blog writer????????????????? lol
This is obviously a baseball town right now Fox. I am the blog writer.
