Sign Off Ideas, Roster Cuts, and Me as a Wide Receiver?

August 28th, 2007 - 3:14pm by domonique_foxworth

To start off with, I’ll be at the Helio store at 4 o’clock on Saturday just doing autograph stuff there, so if anybody wants to come meet up, I would love to meet some of the blog people. I met some of the people on the blog at camp and it’s pretty cool. I like to be able to put a face with the screen name.

About the sign offs, I thought there were some really good ones, really good examples of funny sign offs and some good ideas. One of them that I thought was funny because I’m a fan of “Anchorman” was #80fan’s, “Stay classy, Denver.” I don’t know if I could use it though.  It doesn’t fit my personality, but it was funny. It got a good laugh out of me.

And also, micahpexa’s suggestion to use “All ready” in remembrance of D-Will, which I thought was a great idea. It’s taken on so many different meanings and it keeps D-Will a part of our team and a part of this blog, so I think I like that one also.

Broncobacker12 suggested that I use a different quote each week, inspiring, insightful, motivating, those type of things or whatever type of mood I’m in, which I thought was a great idea, except for the fact that then I have to research some sort of quote every week. So I think we’re going to go with a mixture of all the ideas. I might throw an “All ready” in there every now and then or a “Stay classy,” and if I’m in the mood, a college frame of mind where I feel like researching and finding some good quote, then I’ll throw one of those in there every now and then.

I want to thank broncfannjapan for his support from the other side of the world, which is pretty cool. I’m almost certain that he’s the No. 1 fan in Japan. I can’t imagine that the Broncomania stretches that far, but I’m happy that there’s a small part of Broncos Country in Japan. Good luck with your TDY. I’m generally good with acronyms but I’m not exactly sure what TDY means. I’m sure there’s some military people out there who will respond in the blog coming up. My dad was in the army for 20 years before he retired, so I guess I should know all those weird acronyms.

The only thing I really remember from my dad in the military was the PT test. I remember the physical training test. He was always in shape and always passed those and did well with those, but I was always shocked with some of his army buddies who were kind of chubby and not that healthy. I was always shocked that they passed the PT test. And I feel like a PT test is not a test which you can cheat on. You can’t look on the other guy’s paper if you have to run a mile in a certain amount of time, but I guess they figured a way around it. Or maybe they just looked out of shape.

Broncogregg asked me about the possibility of playing a little receiver, which I think is a great idea. All players think that they can do everything and do everything well. We’re very confident, which is a very good thing but sometimes a very bad thing. But I think that I’m a very talented player and I think a lot of people around here respect my athleticism and my ability. But I’m open to any option that’ll get me on the field more. I’m definitely open to catching a couple touchdown passes. I’m no Chad Johnson, but I can come up with a couple witty dances, I’m sure. Entertain the fans a little bit.

But I might have to run that by Coach Shanahan. I guess this would be the best week to ask him because it’s before the season starts. So great suggestion, I’m definitely going to shoot it by him. He’ll probably laugh at me or something, but I’ll try to keep a straight face when I say it. Maybe he’ll take me seriously.

I think of myself and most people here on this team as football players, not just at specific positions. We’re all pretty good. I think there are only a few players on the team that could only play one position. Like Jason Elam, I cannot see him playing safety. And big Sam Adams, I really can’t see him playing anything but defensive line. I can’t imagine him dropping back and throwing it deep.

But especially in the defensive backfield, I think we’re some of the most athletic people on the field. I think a lot of us could contribute in other places. But I guess that takes away from how good you are at your specific job, so I’ll keep focusing on playing corner. But after I read that quote I definitely gave Coach Heimerdinger a hard time the next day in practice about letting me get some reps in one-on-ones. I told him, “Just get it on tape. You get it on tape, then everybody can see it, then it might give me an opportunity to break out.” I’m already kind of “slash,” I play nickel, corner, and safety. Add receiver to the resume, the more you can do.

This week, none of the starters play in the last preseason game. That’s something that Coach Shanahan has always done, just to give other players the opportunity to get some game experience. It gives the starters an opportunity to rest, and I think it’s a really good thing to do because we’re going to have to cut some players, and it’s rare that players who are going to get cut get this much opportunity to put their abilities on film for other teams to see. So I imagine that a lot of teams are going to see some of our players that are deeper on the depth chart, whereas other places, their starters play the last game and it takes reps away from the young players.

Speaking of cuts, it’s one of the worst times of the year for I think the entire organization. I don’t think anybody enjoys it. I think our coaches recognize how hard people work, and that’s the really upsetting part. They’re here just as long as we are, they do as many workouts as we are, they work out as much as we are, they practice just as hard, if not harder, sometimes, than we do, and some players still have to leave. It’s sad for some of the veteran players, but it’s even more sad for some guys who are trying to get an opportunity to get in the league. I think some of our veteran players will be able to get on elsewhere, just because they’ve proven that they can play. The young players just want an opportunity, and that speaks to the point of how important it is that the starters don’t play in this last preseason game. They get to put it on film and a lot of other people get to see it.

So I think definitely in our defensive backfield, we get really close over the short period of time, because we spend so much time together. I think Quentin Harris got released today, and that was the first player from the defensive backfield that’s been released. But we have a ton of talent, and I think a lot of people talk about how good our starting corners are, how good our veteran safeties are, and how good I am in replacing in those situations, but we’re deep all the way through. I really sincerely believe that if we cut any of our corners, they’ll get picked up somewhere else. Like I said, it’s a really sad time to see these people go, because it’s their dream and it’s their job. Just like any other job, you get fired and you don’t feel good about yourself and you’re looking for an opportunity somewhere else.

One thing about here is if for instance, you get fired from your job as a mailman or something, there’s thousands of other post offices you can apply at. But there’s 31 other teams in which they’re making cuts also, so they’re not necessarily looking to make additions at this time. So it’s really difficult, and it’s a really upsetting time.

But, another highlight of my week… Coach doesn’t make the starters play in the last preseason game, like I said before. And I got the big call. I’m definitely not a starter, but I think they respect the work that I’ve done around here and they think that it would be more important for me to rest in this last game and be healthy for the season opener than to go play. So this is my first year sitting out that last game. I’m really excited. I told a couple of my teammates that it felt like I had just got a new signing bonus or something. That type of respect is really all you look for in athletics. And not just athletics, I think most people just want to be respected and know that your hard work is not taken for granted, and the things that you do in your organization, you just want people to recognize what you’ve done. That’s just one of many ways that the organization can recognize your hard work and your abilities.

So I’ve been on cloud nine all week, following Champ and Dre’ around, because I don’t really know what it’s like to sit out the last preseason game. Like I’ve been doing since I’ve been here, just do exactly what Champ does and you’ll be all right. So I try to keep that motto going.

I just want to thank everybody for their kind words about my meeting with the Williams family. It was really inspirational, I think, for our team just to see how strong their family is right now and how well they are doing. I passed on all those kind words to the Williams family, and I’ve been able to keep in touch with a couple of them, a couple members, since then, which is really helping me and I hope it’s helping them also.

Oh, I almost failed to mention that we set a new blog record. Seventy, a nice round number. I’m proud of it, I brag about it all the time. Because I think my first blog was like in the middle of the summer and there wasn’t much football going on, and I think it was like 12 responses or something. I blame it on the fact that there wasn’t much football going on and nobody was coming to the web site, because I refuse to believe that only 12 people in the entire Broncos Country were interested in the blog. But I didn’t realize how pathetic that was until now that I have 70. So a new record’s been set, and we’ll be looking forward to setting new records.

I guess now the time has come to decide on one of the sign offs. I’ll probably use different ideas in the weeks to come, but I’ll go with a suggestion from onechocolateqt:

“Change is inevitable; growth is optional.”

(I thought it was cool. I don’t know, it comes off a little corny, but just pretend like I’m saying it in a really cool, deep voice or something and it won’t be as corny.)

tjames238, I agree about Ernster. The guy dominated Saeurbrun in the preseason. He came through last year. When trouble caught up it Saeurbrun. I hope Saeurbrun had better kicks in practice. Sure T.S. could rip my head off, but lets give the little guy a chance. You cant have too many former Lumberjacks on your roster. NAU Div IAA 2008 champs!

Hey man what’s goin on? Last Night’s Game Was Awesome. It sucks yeah that the teams have to cut so many players, it’s something like 21 right? That’s insane. And that’s a great thing that Shanahan does, letting those players that are potentially going to be cut have some play time. That’s really awesome.

I think it’s funny how you got excited about not starting haha, but I see what you mean, that’s pretty dang cool. I was also laughing about last night’s game when, towards the end, Javon Walker was manning the camera. Man give him some pointers or something he was making everyone sea-sick with this shaky camera methods and unfocusing. Oh and ask him where he got his haircut, I think I want mine like that!

What’s the story on Alexander? Is it his knee? Man that’s crazy, he looked like he was in a lot of pain as they took him off the field. I hope he’s doing ok and read for the beginning of the regular season. And Paymah? Was it just a concussion? Well I sincerely hope both guys are doing good and their injuries aren’t too bad!!

You guys take care of yourselves, gear up for the start of the regular season and go out there and kick some butt. There’s always that little bit of anticipation from the time preaseason ends and the regular season starts. It’s like ok I hope they’re practicing hard and gearing up. I can’t personally say oh yeah they’re ready because I’m not in practice with you guys but just by what you all show in the games, you guys look really good and I’m excited about this year! I always get excited when football gets close to starting. I’ve been following you guys for pretty much the last 18 – 20 years and there’s always that little girl getting a new toy feeling inside me hah.

Anyway The signoff was good (i like the Anchorman one too!) Take Care!

    Hello there,
Normally I might be talking about your on field performance, or mentioning something great you did. But, I have to be honest…You looked uncomfortable on the sidelines!! Nah, looked like you were enjoying yourself immensely! What a nice honor for you. For all that you do on the field and off for the Bronco’s organization. Very much deserved and earned. I have another quote for you! The most virtuous are those who content themselves with being virtuous without seeking to appear so. Plato. Thank you again, for being one of the numerous players on the team who give so much to the kids!

    Fox,
I hope it is ok if I call you Fox. As far as the week off I am glad to see that you’re getting the respect you deserve. The insight is so cool to see that at your level the reaffirmation still means so much. I know when my hard work was noticed and I became “one of the veterans” in my company, was pretty satisfying.
Now down to the arm chair coach in me, I think in the best defensive back field in the league, you fully deserve a more involved role. I know with Champ and Bly the corners are pretty locked down and snaps are at a premium. I think you could definitely add a nice wrinkle for the offence to get you an end around or some snaps in the slot as a receiver to help your growing “slash” role.
I think you’re of the best young talents we have and as it turns out a very engaging writer. I thank you for your writings regarding Darrent. I feel as though I knew him a little; through your words, he will be remembered. Keep the insight coming; this is my favorite weekly read.

fox, first time replyin, usually When i have something to say someone has already stated it. I’m a lifelong die hard bronco fan from toronto canada. Everyone here has there own nfl team to cheer for, til the league comes north, but i’d stay a broncofan for life. Doin what I can to get to buffalo to watch you kick their butts!

Anyway just wanted to say that i thought the sign off was real cool, not corny at all, I like motto’s that mean something not just trying to be funny or cool, that message is perfect, you have to choose to change.

One of my faves has always been “if you think you can or think you can’t, your right”

I coach a high school football team and our motto is “excellence through teamwork”

and my college coach always said, “no one who ever gave his best, ever regretted it”

P.s. I got a signed pic of D-Will on my wall, that will be there forever, His spirit will always be remembered.

TDY is temporary duty. i’m not sure why it’s not just TD, but whatever, I don’t make them up. My dad was in the air force for 27 years and I spent a little time at the air force academy in colorado springs, so I think I am required to know all of those, haha. good luck this year! you had 3 ints and 3 tds in my madden game on phillip rivers, and that was on all madden, hope that really happens!

  12. codbra says:

    Domonique,

Thanks for the blog this week. I am glad to hear that your hard work and dedication to this football program is paying off. I sounds like not only your teammates are seeing you as a key player but the coaching staff is involving you more as a key player. I can’t imagine what that payoff must feel like. My sister sent me the Broncos Game Day mag from the browns week. I was reading the article about Lynch and he mentioned your name a couple of times involving key players on the Broncos defense this year. That mus feel great coming from a 15 year vet like Lynch. Great work out there. Go Broncos and the new Bates “D.”

IAM VERY SHOCKED TO SEE KYLE GET CUT HE WAS A VERY HARD WORKER AND WHEN HIS NUMBER WAS CALLED HE CAME THROUGH BE IT A GAME CHANGING TOUCHDOWN OR A PICK UP OF A FIRST DOWN TO KEEP A DRIVE ALIVE.

  14. matty21 says:

I cant believe Kyle “the juggernaut” Johnson got cut. He was a top 5 fullback in the league and was extremely underrated. Big mistake by Shanahan. If Cecil “I am 30 pounds lighter” Diesel or Mike Bell are at fullback than were in big trouble. You talk about players being able to play many positions. Well that doesnt apply to Mike Bell and Cecil Sapp playing fullback.

In honor of KJ, a nice rendition of the bucking bronco would be inevitable when you score a touchdown.

  15. shaiman7 says:

i heard about the whole team going to broomfield because they won the broncoholic award, is that right? thats my hometown but im not gunna be there cuz i live in the virgin islands now, can u tell us about that?

  16. champ24girl says:

    Foxy,
Thanks again for another great blog!! I was out of town last week and as soon as I got back to Denver your blog was the first thing I looked up on the Internet.

As a fan I must say I hate the week that the roster has to get down to 53 because I don’t like seeing some of my favorite players go – like Kyle Johnson. I’m going to really miss him, he was always a great interview and was great fun when he hosted John Lynch’s show.

Well, anyway, good luck in your first real game of the season – can’t wait for Sunday!!!!!

I love the linebackers that we have and don’t want to see any of them go. That said, I think we need a defensive field general at middle linebacker. I suggest we take a long hard look at Jo-Lonn Dunbar out of Boston College. He is fast, strong, smart, and a celebrated leader. Why not spend a first round pick on him? I think the other areas can be addressed in free agency and the development of the immense young talent we have on this team.
