Shanahan’s Monday Presser: Week 3

September 24th, 2007 - 1:28pm by Andrew

1:27 P.M. MDT: Settling in here … thanks to a new broadband wireless card, we are connected and on-line.

1:30 P.M. MDT: Shanahan walks in, wearing sunglasses. “When it’s fourth-and-5 and you’re at your 9-yard-line with four minutes left and you go for it and you come home and your wife hits you,” he joked. It turned out that there’s a cat at his house, and he’s allergic; thus, the shades.

1:31 P.M. MDT: Both John Lynch and Jay Cutler will undergo MRI examinations for their groin and ankle injuries, respectively.

1:32 P.M. MDT: Says for the rushing defense, the team has to “go back to the basics.”

1:33 P.M. MDT: Curome Cox was “not bad” in filling in for Lynch, Shanahan said.

1:33 P.M. MDT: Says that Simeon Rice played 37 plays on Sunday, which was 17 more than last week. Whether he plays more depends on the game situation. “We don’t want to overdo it,” he said.

1:34 P.M. MDT: Offers praise for Elvis Dumervil: “He’s stepped up and met the challenge.”

1:34 P.M. MDT: Agrees with the assessment of offensive players that the offense could be poised for a breakout, but comes back to the failure to score in the red zone from the 3-yard-line. “Either you get it done or you don’t,” Shanahan said.

1:35 P.M. MDT: Says the Colts, next Sunday’s opponent, “are playing extremely well … good on both sides.”

1:36 P.M. MDT: “Hey, smart move,” Shanahan says of Lane Kiffin’s decision to mimic the Broncos’ use of an end-game pre-field goal timeout for the Raiders in their win over Cleveland.

1:37 P.M. MDT: Said that Ryan Harris will be back on the practice field this coming Wednesday … and that there is no update on Ben Hamilton. “It’s getting a little scary now; it’s been a while … he’s still got symptoms he’s had since the first or second week (after the concussion).”

1:39 P.M. MDT: On the communications problems — he says it was between the sideline and Cutler’s helmet receiver; there was static on the signal. “It wasn’t constant, it was just inconsistent,” he said. He added that in the past those problems “never” happen at home but sometimes on the road.

1:40 P.M. MDT: “It was 20-7 after the field goal from the first drive of the third quarter … we felt like we had to get in a little bit different type of rhythm,” said Shanahan of Travis Henry’s lack of carries Sunday; he ended the day with just 11 rushes.

1:41 P.M. MDT: Said that Paul Smith will also have an MRI … and that just touching the cat caused his eye problems … and we’re out.

Shanny needs to throw some cats into a large ring and tell the defensive players to tackle them. Run and tackle little kittens all day long. They might actually succeed at tackling for once. Mike…you need to take a serious look at your linebackers. Specifically the weak side. Someone needs to tell that guy how to read his gaps…Webster missed a couple(or so it appear, but I can’t imagine Bates designing a play with two LB’s rushing into the same gap while leaving another wide open). Pathetic play all around and I wish I was there so I could have BOOED them all off the field. 2-5 at home in the last 7 HOME games????? That is unacceptable in my book. I am disgusted right now.

Of course, if the Broncos beat Indy next week….all will be forgiven. ;)

    agree

Indy is who we have designed this offense and defense to beat. If we fail to keep this game close, it looks like it is back to the drawing board for next year. I see Peyton having an average day and Addai having 180 yds since we can’t put 8 in the box. Our defense has been exposed, and teams that can’t stop the run rarely succeed. We had better start putting up some serious points on offense or this is going to be a tough year to continue to watch.

I would have went for it on 4th down to. If we punted the ball they would have just ran it down our thoats like the rest of the game. I keep hearing things like “we need to get better” and “its a new system”. Please, I cant handle anymore excuses. The defense coach needs to correct this our else bring in someone who can. Also, how about firing whoevers idea it was to get rid of Gerrard Warren. Bonehead move of the year.

  5. Music1812 says:

At this point in time, the Broncos are playing no better than at the end of last year. And someone needs to take responsibility for the how the team was put together, and the way it’s playing.

  6. poorboywilly says:

I agree on going for it. At least the fate of the game rested on the offense, which has already won two games this season in similar situations, and not on a defense that is obviously tired and worn out from being on the field most of the game. Funny thing is, everyone would be saying it was brilliant or gutsy or whatever had Graham held on to the pass.

  7. broncomania48 says:

i disagree strongly,, we have a great team in the making once we learn how to stop the run, we can play with ANYONE!!! remember we did get 2 td’s instead of 2 field goals yesterday,,,

  8. KoobLis says:

i agree totally with you broncomania; the only problem is that great teams win superbowls and great teams in the making gets coaches fired..

hey all that I have to say is that anyone giving up on the Broncos in week 3 has no room to comment. The defense will mend itself and only get better as the games go on. Hats off to the Jags, but still we were in the game pretty much the entire game. I loved the call to go for it on 4th down in the fourth quarter. We wouldn’t have even got the ball back if we would have punted. We can all agree that the team will play a lot better next week. Bring it on Payton.

This team is really good. Mike Shanahan needs to trust Cutler and let him throw into the endzone more from outside the 20 yard line. This isn’t Greesie or Plummer this is a kid with on arm. He’s also pretty accurate. I know they want to depend on their running game but sometimes you just need to take chances and throw it into the five yard line or endzone. I bet they have a great game against Indy.

  11. westcoast says:

Out team is not good. We are a middle of the pack NFL team at best. That doent mean we are giving up on the Bronces. it just means we are being honest and stopping with all the excuses. Our problem lies with the defensive front 7. They are soft and probably couldnt stop the Trojans. The sad thing is that we are not even getting better. We are getting worse with each game and have not even played a team with a premier runner.

  12. Broncomania56 says:

I hate to live in the past, but here goes anyway. I miss AL WILSON. Had he been playing in the middle, he would of thwarted the go ahead touchdown on the goal-line. Now to my point. Our defense is very hesitant. They look confused. Not sure how many times a defensive end has get sucked in on play action. Every time Jax. was in 3rd down they would run play action boot, a running back in the flat, 1st down. This defensive system is killing us. I’m sorry but we got rid of a lot of good players. We had no problems with the run last year, only the pass. We corrected that issue by adding Dre Bly. A little more blitzes, probably would be pretty successful. This loss was a team loss. We were blessed with a golden opportunity. Down by six, we were gift wrapped a golden opportunity. Grahm drops a sure pass. Are u kidding me, as much as he cost. Jay through that ball right on the money. Special players, make special plays. Bonehead call, quarterback sneak on fourth and a long yard. Wow!!! Ok Ok i’m venting too much. Bottom line we are going to get killed against the colts. They are pretty balanced. Even if not we are on a roll to make every running back we play look like a stud.

  13. GO CUTLER says:

LETS NO PANIC YET THE SEASON IS STILL YOUNG THE OFFENSE IS GETTING BETTER THE DEFENSE WILL IMPROVE THEY WILL KEEP GETTING BETTER

  14. BishopBronco says:

The easiest fix for the Broncos this season is to start getting touchdowns in the red zone. Yes, we have some issues on defense that need to be ironed out, but if we can score those 2-3 TDs per game were giving away we end up with wins. I have been amazed by the level of teamwork the offense has shown this year. They effortlessly march down the field on the majority of posessions like a TEAM should. Pulling together the red zone offense is the key to the broncos success. As for the defense… Speed is always a bonus but a defense cannot be succesfull against all types of offenses unless there is a mixture of size/strength/speed. Beef it up next year!!!

  15. jared says:

the problems lyes in ball control every time they run the ball the broncos are successful and the deffense dose wll enought to win. I dont know why they dont run the ball more it work. you have play action with out the play first. If they will do this I think the season will be very seccessful, but if not it will be over very quickly.

  16. cfact88 says:

the whole team is soft and i thought i would never say it but its true

  17. cfact88 says:

the whole time is soft and i never thought i would ever say that but its true

  18. chevyman2000 says:

Plain and simple the defense SUCKS!!! We have been building defense for the last 3 or 4 off seasons. We use draft picks, trades, and free agency, and we have two corners that are great but was given up good yards underneath last Sunday. What does Bates and the defense think is going to happen in Indy this weekend. Payton will take what you give him you give 4 to 5 yards underneath all day then that is how they will move the ball. All eleven players stunk it up Sunday. I can’t be too hard on the offense they hardly had the ball enough to do anything with. Couple more possession and we are maybe 3-0. But good to have this happen now instead of the playoffs. Cause now they can do something about this hopefully. If we kept on winning these games that we were decided so closely then everything would of probably be still swept under the rug. If something doesn’t change then it will be 80 to nothing this weekend with Addai with 300 yards from scrimmage!!!

  19. BlueAndOrangeHawkeye says:

First couple games have been rough on both sides, but anyone who thinks this team is medocre is delusional. The strong point right now is without question the offence, who has all of the tools to become the premier offence in The League, but it’s the Defense that’s still #3 overall, led by a sick pass-defense (88.3 yards per game with the #2 passing defense giving up FIFTY PERCENT more yards so far? If you put that in a football movie it would ruin the story because it’s too much). 2-1, should be 0-3, could be 3-0, whatever… the NFL season is 16 games long, even in the AFC we can lose another 5, possibly 6 games and make the playoffs while letting the little things work themselves out. And once this team works out the kinks, look out.
And going for it on 4th down at your own 9? To do otherwise would have been to forfeit; you don’t win superbowls by accepting 14-20 defeats instead of risking 14-27 trying for a 21-20 advantage. But even in other circumstances, it’s a solid decision. Courageous, and a display of faith in your players; even given the outcome, my favorite play so far this season (hind-sight’s 20-20; without knowing the future and already knowing the result would be a fieldgoal by Jax, the decision has to be to go for it); if the guts to go for it on 4th and long at the 9 can penetrate the players’ helmets and get in them, ‘Great Success!’
