Shanahan Fireside: Week 9

November 5th, 2007 - 1:49pm by Andrew

1:19 P.M. MST: And we’re here waiting for Head Coach Mike Shanahan to sit down in the media room at 1:30 p.m. Above all, we await word on Jay Cutler’s MRI examination, to see if it revealed any further damage to his leg.

1:28 P.M. MST: A few more people here at the presser than there were for Shanahan’s gatherings during the last few weeks, when the Colorado Rockies were in the midst of their dramatic postseason run … This is also the first day-after presser in two weeks, since these are not held on the Tuesday following Monday night games.

1:32 P.M. MST: And we wait … seven cameras and 20, now 21 onlookers poised to go.

1:35 P.M. MST: And he’s here.

1:36 P.M. MST: The MRI on Jay Cutler’s leg was negative, revealing no stress fracture of the fibula. Shanahan said that he is “a little sore,” and that he would see what the quarterback can do at Wednesday’s practice. “Right now he’s quite sore, and we’ll see how he feels on Wednesday.”

1:37 P.M. MST: When asked whether this was a best-case scenario considering that Cutler left on a cart Sunday, Shanahan said, “Yeah, no question about it,” but acknowledged that Cutler’s leg is badly bruised.

1:37 P.M. MST: “Everybody — I don’t know!” Shanahan said, smiling, as the questions on Cutler’s potential status for next week continued to fly.

1:38 P.M. MST: On Glenn Martinez: “He’s a little bit sore — sore ribs. He’s hurting a little bit. Nothing’s broken, so that’s a good sign.”

1:39 P.M. MST: “Anytime that you have new people in there … you make a mistake here and there and all of a sudden it’s a snowball effect. That’s basically what happened.”

1:40 P.M. MST: “Right now we’ve got a lot of these guys getting treatment. I’ll get a better idea in a couple of days,” Shanahan said of the other players who were banged up Sunday — Matt Lepsis, D.J. Williams, Brandon Marshall, et. al.

1:40 P.M. MST: On the recent rash of penalties: “It’s a little bit unusual. Crowd noise had something to do with it, but we practice with crowd noise.”

1:41 P.M. MST: When asked whether he questioned the scheme, he said, “Well, we’ve adjusted already … we did it against Pittsburgh, obviously against Green Bay and this week as well. Anytime you’re not effective in something, you adjust the scheme.”

1:42 P.M. MST: Says he is satisfied with the work of Jim Bates. “Obviously … there’s work that needs to be done.”

1:42 P.M. MST: Said that Patrick Ramsey “played exceptionally well,” and cited “poor protection” from up front on the fumble that he lost for a touchdown.

1:43 P.M. MST: “If Jay’s not able to go, obviously we won’t go into the game with one quarterback,” Shanahan said of the possibility of adding another passer to the 53-man roster.

1:44 P.M. MST: “Sometimes you do have to adjust, depending on what type of team you’re playing,” Shanahan said when asked whether he would adjust the pass-protection schemes to account for the higher volume of younger players up front on the offensive line.

1:45 P.M. MST: “It’s not a magic formula … We’ll go back and work on the things we’ve done poorly,” Shanahan said.

1:45 P.M. MST: Thought Andre Hall provided “a spark” and that he was “a natural” on kickoff returns.

1:46 P.M. MST: On the AFC West race: “Well, you never know how a season’s going to go … There’s been teams 1-5 that go to the championship game. That’s just the nature of this game … You’ve just got to take it day by day. We know what we’re doing poorly. We’ve got a long ways to go. We’re not there yet.”

1:46 P.M. MST: “I think that if you ever say you’re rebuilding, you’re giving yourself an excuse for not having success right now … Do we have some young players? Yeah, but that doesn’t mean we have to rebuild … We’ve got some new people at new positions, but that doesn’t mean we’re rebuilding.”

1:48 P.M. MST: On why Mike Leach is the emergency quarterback: “He’s a smart guy … he can run the offense, he can at least hand the ball off.” Shanahan did say that it still would be a “scary situation” if the long snapper/tight end/fullback ever had to take snaps.

1:49 P.M. MST: And that’s it for today.

    Better internet connection today, Mason?

    Mason,

I just wanted to say thanks for having live video feeds of these press conferences. I’ve not gotten to catch one before this one, but it’s working like a charm.

    Thanks,

THANKS JIM BATES,JEREMY BATES ,BILL JOHNSON ,SCOTT O´B.

  5. lawdog says:

“So, Mike, how is Jay’s leg?” “No problem, he’s ready to go…”

    Classic Shanahan

  6. troyRider says:

I would also like to say thanks. Also, that is great news. Du you have any feel about Cutler? Any idea on another QB? Arron Brooks comes to mind. How is Larry Johnson feeling? What a huge brake if he cannot go? Please make changes on D.

  7. AndrewMason says:

Cutler stayed in there late in the Jaguars game when his ankle was throbbing. He’s a gamer. If it can’t go, it means his leg is pretty bad. As for the QB, we’ll see … but Darrell Hackney is on the practice squad. Remember, the Broncos will have a free spot to bring in someone once Jarvis Moss goes on I.R.

  8. vegasbronco says:

If another qb is needed, Matt Mauck looked good in preseason a couple of years ago. My vote would be for Bradlee Van Pelt. BVP has recent experience in the system, he’s tough, and he always played with a lot of competitive fire. He could be a spark if he saw the field. Wouldn’t they promote Hackney before signing someone new, though?

  9. RICE BRONCO says:

    Fire Bates, trade Bill Cowher

  10. troyRider says:

Thanks. Have you heard anything about LJ?

  11. denverobsession says:

Even if the ankle keeps Cutler out a game, I’d be VERY surprised if we signed an outside QB. It would take more than a couple of days to get anyone not already on the team up to speed, so it would be pointless to sign someone as a backup’s backup in this case.

If Cutler can’t go, expect Shanahan to activate Darrell Hackney as a backup QB vs KC.

No mention of how worthless Sam Adams is???

Obviously he is just one of the problems, but why did they bring him in again?

There are two plays that stand out in my mind from yesterday concerning Adams: A running play were he was ridden right out of the play by a Lions O lineman. This probably happened much more, but this one sticks out since he was totally owned by the much smaller O lineman, opening up a huge whole. Then there was the 12 men on the field call, which big Sam could not get off the field in time.

With off season acquisitions like this, no wonder the season is all but lost. I was skeptical of Sam Adams when they signed him and even more when I learned he does not practice on Wednesday (are they worried he is going to drop some weight?), but his play is just embarrassing. He doesn’t help stop the run and can barely get on and off the field. Not to pile on Sam, but the defense needs an overhaul and Sam Adams and Jim Bates should be the first to go.

Forget Let Plummer Play, how about Bench Sam Adams.

  13. thunderousroar says:

I’m truly speechless. That was the Lions that did that to us? Was Larry Coyer that bad? Do you miss Gerrard Warren yet? When he was traded, it was said that he didn’t fit the new system. Looks like the new defensive system needs tackling practice.

  14. orangecrush44 says:

Satisfied with Jim Bates!!!……………..Im losing faith in shanahan!……I wish he would at least address the problem

  15. broncos_for_life says:

    i do to

  16. anonamous says:

    mason,
please somebody suggest to shannahan that he swallows his pride, admit that bates was a horrible mistake, and go out and do whatever is neccessary to get Ron Rivera on as his new defensive coordinator. we fans have suffered enough waiting for this team to ‘learn’ bates’ system… and frankly… if it’s this complicated… how would anyone ever expect to bring in FA or draftees and expect them to compete

  17. #7forever says:

You cant make chicken salad out of chicken shyt…..

I still have the utmost faith in shanahan, the grass isnt always greener on the other side.

Defense needs to work out some serious bugs, if the O-line was healthy, J. Walker was back the offense wouldnt struggle how they have in my personal opinion….having walker took a lot of attn. off brandon marshall….

Here’s to bigger and better things going forward !

Thankfully cutler is ok, he is the way of the future…

  18. MileHighShack says:

    People

    It’s not Bates

Have you seen the “talent” he has to work with???

I mean seriously, some of the guys are young, but some are inconsistant or just plain worthless (rice, adams, gold, webster)

I don’t know of many DCs who could work with this group and do much better

  19. tigervixxxen says:

Thank you for the update on Cutler. What a relief to hear that he just needs some rest to feel better. He will push himself to get back out there so I’m not worried. If Cutler has to take a week off to heal I’m ok with that, lets just be thankful he’s not done for the season.

I heard Larry Johnson is almost certainly out for this week. He is currently on crutches and can’t walk. For them to say that this early in the week is not a good sign for him. I’d expect LJ to not play.

As disappointing as these past 7 weeks have been do keep in mind if we beat the Chiefs and the Chargers lose to the Colts this week that we are back for a tie in the AFC West. Crazy to think after all this we are that close to the division lead. Us winning obviously has to come first but its possible. Lets hope for a second half turn around.

  20. scanartist says:

I love how we (commentors, fans, etc.), myself included, think that during a press conference Shanahan is going to come out and say, “You know what, everyone else is right, i was wrong, Bates’ system isn’t working out for us and we’ve released him in favor of someone else.” Even if they were thinking/talking about that, we would be the last ones to know. Think of it from a business perspective, your right in the middle of the christmas season and you go on telling how horrible your product is and how no one should buy it? no, if the product is bad, but still salvageable, you knuckle up and deal with when the season is over and quietly make changes.

What i’m saying is that i’m not surprised that they haven’t announced anything along the lines of what is going on with the defense, or its coach. is this the “most embrassing year ever?” Not yet anyway. we have 3 wins better than Miami. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bates’ isn’t skating on thin ice. When he breaks through, then we will hear about it.

  21. DenvaBroncos says:

Forget it SAM ADAMS is a monster just because hes big and slow he can take to blockers or maybe even three its jsut that the other players on the line should og and tackle and I KNOW no one wants to say this but dang i hate saying this but dre bly and champ baily whawts up with them these last couple of games espiecially the green bay game they keep geting burned and juked come on DRE AND CHAMP TURN IT Up yall are way better then this YALL ARE THE BEST CORNERBACKS i dont care what anybody says but come on and if we had javon walker he would of gotten doubled which would of left other reviecers opened and patrick ramsey did the good even if he had no protection since its his first start if he had more experisence this season he would of done better but if we had jay cutler right now he would of made better passes since this is ramseys first game since wow a long time but cutler would of gotten the ball to the receivers and TDs and the broncos probally wouldnt have gotten 44 points but the touchdown from jay cutler to the receivers would have gotten the broncos momentom and that momentom would of helped the defense so the lions wouldnt have scored 30 points on offense and the 14 points that they got on defense probally wouldnt have happened with jay because ramsey is a little rusty and also one thing i leanred is keep some of the rookies and young guys for a little bit because once you trade them or get rid of htem and bring new guys in then they have to settle in for a atleast one year so that season is done since we have so many young players and also keep the running backs we have to every year it seems as we have a new RB and we should get Adrion pierson the vikings line SUCKS its just hes so good so imagine are RUN LINE which every year maes and running back look good with the 1000 yards per year so imagine what would happen JUST IMAGINE and are defense just has to tackle

  22. cornersfan says:

that’s great that jay might be able to go on sunday! at first that hit looked pretty bad.

  23. sess44 says:

Well, look at the “talent” he has to work with, then think of the talent he got rid of to build this defense. Bly is proving to be a Ryan Leaf magnitude bust. Good thing we traded so much to get him.

26 year old 1,000 yard rusher with probably 6 good years left in him
27 year old starting tackle with probably 7 good years left in him
    5th round pick

    in exchange for

29 year old overrated CB with probably 3 good years left in him
    6th round pick

And I can say overrated because since he left, their defense has improved in the secondary in terms of takeovers (look it up)

    Excellent decision

  24. DenvaBroncos says:

    correct my last part

so imadine are RUN LINE which every year makes any running back look good with a 1000 yards per year so imagine what would happen JUST IMAGINE and are defense just has to tackle and stop the pass and BRANDEN MARSHALL IS A MONSTER THEM CATCHES AND THE BREAKING TACKLES AFTER CATCHES WOW

~Saijul-BIG or even THE BIGGEST FAN in MARYLAND and dont worry broncos you got a BIG MAD CRAzy fan in the MD

  25. [...] Shanahan said. It appears Cutler has a chance to play in Week 10 against the Chiefs. Mason’s Morsels

  26. Milehighbronco7 says:

I have to agree with all the comments I seeposte here. The “D” is horrible and Bates needs to go. Shanny better address the problems ASAP. I’m getting tired of watching the Broncos lose!! I have been a die hard fan since the days of the Orange Crush and will always remain fatithful but this season has been a complete mess. Something’s gotta give or go!!!

  27. Milehighbronco7 says:

I live in Florida flew out to Colorado in Sept. to see the Broncos play the Jags….only to see them lose to the Jags, who by the way I can’t stand. It’s very disappointing watching them lose week after week. I am flying back out in December to see the game against the Chiefs. I hope by then something has turned around. I’m glad to hear Cutler injury isn’t as bad as it seemed yesterday. Live eat and breath BRONCO football….c’mon Broncos let’s start winning!!!!!

  28. Maceano says:

GET BATES OUT OF DENVER!!! He is a terrible assistant coach. The man’s scheme is very unorganized. I have never seen the Broncos deffense so all over the place. We constantly dont have enough men on the field or too many people on the field. Not only does his scheme not work at all! But now he is destroying a franchise that has always been well disciplined and never committed this many penalties ever. DONT DESTROY SOMETHING GREATER THAN YOURSELF YOU BUM BATES!!!

  29. Dekreybroncofan says:

So that was a little sad, but I some other teams helped us out and everyone in our Division lost this week. We are still only one game behind! Now if we beat a KC at home (hopefully w/o L.J.) we should be sitting nice. I just hope Jay is okay. Who is Drew Beldso Playing for? It would be nice to get him, I mean think about the guys that have sat behind him (Tom Brady, and Tony Romo)… We need him in here to show Jay a thing or two while he is sore… Jay is Tought though I think hell only sit out a week at most. You know I dont think the D looked bad untill we were so far behind it was impossible to win. If our O would have put up some point we would have had a good chance of winning that football game.

  30. Derick1 says:

    we have to get together.

  31. chiefbronco says:

Bates is not the entire problem, Shanny needs to stop calling the plays and let his committee call them….oh, that should change too.

  32. westcoast says:

sess44….please dont forget that Tatum Bell could not hold onto the ball. He cost us games and could not be counted on and Foster sucked. Bell is the Lions 3rd string running back so that should tell you something. Our cornerbacks are constantly having to come up and tackle. The improvemnt needs to be with the linebackers and a replacment for Sam Adams. Marcus Thomas is going to be a stud along with Moss, Crowder and Elvis. Maybe change things to a 3-4 defense. Just a thought

  33. ThunderCVR says:

    Goooooooooooooo Broncos!

  34. wormyblackburny says:

I don’t know how we turned a team on the verge of winning a championship into a team on the verge of getting the #1 draft pick in the course of 2 years. Lets hope the Patriots and Colts get worse next year or we have a LONG time to wait before we see another Lombardi trophy.

  35. ohio says:

Oh thank heavens Cutler is ok, when I first say the hit I instantly thought he had broken his leg. Ramsey did ok filling in but we need Jay back out there and we need to Jay to lineup in more shotgun formations and he needs to take deeper drops! We need to stop the short routes and have the receivers run deeper, longer routes! Start airing it out, it worked for Favre against the Chiefs so let’s implimate the same game plan! Only 1 game back and we are 3-5, this is the craziest year so far to date that I’ve witnessed! We need to beat the Chiefs if we did that, we would certainly raise some eyebrows!

  36. ohio says:

so many things are being said on here and the most popular seems to be about our defense and I can’t see a reason why we shouldn’t talk about our D????

It is very clueless, just lost, I have never seen so many guys completely confused about where to go and what do in the game of football in my entire life……what is that all about……it could be that Bates is new and what this team was familiar with last year and the year before is all so different this year because Bates thinks he has this talent to groom defenses…..from what I’ve seen he’s dismantled what was a great defense…….it’s a disgrace to watch the defense scramble in and out they look disoriented each week and if I’m an opposing offense and I see this I’l licking my chops to exploit this! Get it together and if it doesn’t get fixed before this season is lost then some people need to see there way out!

  37. bobcat82 says:

Has anyone come to realize you cant put pressure on an N.F.L quarterback with only four D lineman , also D.J williams never was nor will he ever be a middle backer, his strength since coming to denver was drop back in coverage and use his speed, he is out man and out schooled as as a middle backer, with this scheme of bates the line backers are the gap fillers. they can’t do it when two ton adams. gets stood up and the O. line gets to the second level, we have the talent but the bates system does not work when you have old out of shape lineman, and in experienced line backers, our D.B s are the only ones making plays which is one reason bly got burned againist the packers they are always reading run first and pass second its the front seven that shoulder the blame for that loss and last sunday’s then again how about the call to run on 3rd down with 24 seconds left for a first whta happened to the play action let cecil or kyle work the line and cutler hitting them in the flat, great play calling on shannahan’s part fix the defense first, fire bates, remember brian billick firing his offense cor. last year after six games tuned out good for the ravens, like any job if you don’t fit in your gone we have the personal just playing the wrong people in positions where they were never meant to play use adams on punts or extra points and field goals to try to block the kick hes to fat and slow to be an affective run stopper

  38. elway07 says:

I’m beyond relieved that Cutler is okay… he’s such a huge contributor to this team I can’t imagine anyone else right now taking over. Cutler is a tough guy, I really think he’ll come back on Sunday and hopefully his leg won’t bother him. As far as beating the Chiefs — CRUSH ‘EM!!!!!!! I have been living in this dreadful sea of red for 13 years and have had to put up with all sorts of nutty Chiefs fans rubbing in the win when the Broncos come here. I’m sick and tired of it and I definitely want a change when it comes to beating the rotten Chiefs on their own turf. I’m not crazy enough to go the Arrowhead stadium and get clobbered by mental fans but I’m the #1 fan of my orange & blue and they’ve got me behind them.

I’ll definitely be coming out in December in my hometown to watch a better rematch (hopefully) of last year’s KC @ Den. That was just so BLAH, the only points were field goals from both sides and as crazy as it sounds we went in to OT just to march down the field with a certain #16 just so we can score another field goal and win by the grace of Elam’s foot. I love Elam to death, he’s a life saver he’s been with this team forever but for once I’d like to win with Cutler marching us down the field and getting a TD. I still remember fans at that game chanting in unison for Cutler to be put in – I would even venture to bet that LPP was probably one of those people, I know I was.

Enough of that subject, I hope we can have many injured players come back like Cutler, Walker and Lynch — 3 of our biggest players we need these guys. Lynch is like the heart & soul of this team — he reminds me of Al Wilson, getting everybody pumped up, excited about playing. Always making sure everyone’s head is in the right place, not drifting off into la-la land. These guys are just 3 keys to us winning big. It would hands down hilarious if we embarrassed the Chiefs like we have been twice now – I’d love nothing more in this world than to go around this little city and just go on and on about how the Broncos kicked the crap out of the Chiefs. I know I’d be laughing.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. jamesbailey24 says:

I think this shoul be the depth chart on D for the broncos:

CB LE LT RT RE CB

Bailey Engleberger Adams Rice Dumervil Bly
    Foxworth
    LOLB MLB ROLB

    Beck WIlliams GOld

    FS SS
    Ferguson Lynch/Abdullah

  40. jamesbailey24 says:

we need those changes on D so we could change the lineup as I did or use more linebackers in a 3-4 formation so we could get rice-adams-dumervil up front and beck-webster-williams-gold as LB, this shoul help us stop the run and get more presure on the QB with at least 3 lineman and 1 LB rush, I think it would be good.

Also, the passing defense should be better!

  41. LetPlummerPlay says:

Andrew, what size shirt do you wear? I’m getting the LPP shirt ready to send to you, because at this point I know you’re coming over to the dark side!

This has just become ridiculous! For those of you calling Cutler a BALLER, or GAMER or whatever you’re calling him, don’t forget he INSISTS his leg is broken, though MRI shows it’s not!

Sounds like he WANTS SOME TIME OFF to me.

  42. Bronco4life60 says:

Let’s face it! Mike is only the mastermind with a quarterback named Elway and Gary Kubiack. Without either he is lost. The offence is as predictable as Dan Reaves. With out Elway Dan’s record would have not been as good. The thing that hurts the most as a fan, is that the team has given up on several games. They are not focused, and NOT FIRED UP! I believe that this is why we have so many players hurt. Maybe it is time for Mike to go, and the Bill Cower era to begin!! Cower’s teams were always fired up!

  43. westcoast says:

bobcat82…Great Blog. What kills me is during the Shanny interview a reporter asked him about Bates and he said that he thoght he was doing a good job. I almost popped a nut. Did anyone else hear that? I can’t believe after 4 preseason games and 8 regular season games we still suck. Let me guess…we are working on it……Mr. Bowlen please can there asses.

  44. broncoinexile says:

Even that sycophantic imbecile, LPP admits that all the idiots, morons and members of the flat earth society that keep calling for jake plummer to give up retirement to come back and continue his career as a mediocre quarterback are on the dark side.

Now, if he would just take his psychopathic, moronic ranting to another blog where he can enjoy his bizarre little love affair with a retired quarterback and leave the rest of us free from stepping in his blog entries, which are as welcome as your neighbor’s dog’s droppings on your doorstep.

    Get a life, loser!

  45. broncoinexile says:

lpp, the person who WANTS SOME TIME OFF is the object of your bizarre, twisted little fantasy worship, jake plummer.

HE announced to the entire sporting world that HE wanted some time off when HE retired from football.

HE continues to announce that HE WANTS SOME TIME OFF every single day when he continues to remain a retired quarterback.

Take your sick little fetish somewhere else.

  46. step on me says:

Hello Mason! I am so glad Cutler’s MRI came back negative. When I seen that play yesterday, I though he might have broken his leg. He is the best QB we have had in Denver since Elway. Hopefully his bruise heals quickly.

I know the Broncos will bounce back and I wish them luck for Kansas City.

    Go Broncos!!!!!!

Once our O and D lines get upgrades, we will start winning games.

  49. Bronco4life60 says:

We will be happy down the road that our rookies have had some playing time. Just like the Rockies, the Broncos need not to have such a roster turn over each year. Let’s beat the Chefs and tie for the division lead. Remember when we were the best division?

  50. vegasbronco says:

“the only points were field goals from both sides and as crazy as it sounds we went in to OT just to march down the field with a certain #16 just so we can score another field goal and win by the grace of Elam’s foot”.

Ummmm….hey 07, have you watched any of the games this year? I think they have all been “a certain #6″ marching down the field and scoring field goals, and winning by the grace of Elam’s foot. Where is the difference? We’re not scoring any more touchdowns. Besides, the key word is “win”, no?
