1:19 P.M. MST: And we’re here waiting for Head Coach Mike Shanahan to sit down in the media room at 1:30 p.m. Above all, we await word on Jay Cutler’s MRI examination, to see if it revealed any further damage to his leg.
1:28 P.M. MST: A few more people here at the presser than there were for Shanahan’s gatherings during the last few weeks, when the Colorado Rockies were in the midst of their dramatic postseason run … This is also the first day-after presser in two weeks, since these are not held on the Tuesday following Monday night games.
1:32 P.M. MST: And we wait … seven cameras and 20, now 21 onlookers poised to go.
1:35 P.M. MST: And he’s here.
1:36 P.M. MST: The MRI on Jay Cutler’s leg was negative, revealing no stress fracture of the fibula. Shanahan said that he is “a little sore,” and that he would see what the quarterback can do at Wednesday’s practice. “Right now he’s quite sore, and we’ll see how he feels on Wednesday.”
1:37 P.M. MST: When asked whether this was a best-case scenario considering that Cutler left on a cart Sunday, Shanahan said, “Yeah, no question about it,” but acknowledged that Cutler’s leg is badly bruised.
1:37 P.M. MST: “Everybody — I don’t know!” Shanahan said, smiling, as the questions on Cutler’s potential status for next week continued to fly.
1:38 P.M. MST: On Glenn Martinez: “He’s a little bit sore — sore ribs. He’s hurting a little bit. Nothing’s broken, so that’s a good sign.”
1:39 P.M. MST: “Anytime that you have new people in there … you make a mistake here and there and all of a sudden it’s a snowball effect. That’s basically what happened.”
1:40 P.M. MST: “Right now we’ve got a lot of these guys getting treatment. I’ll get a better idea in a couple of days,” Shanahan said of the other players who were banged up Sunday — Matt Lepsis, D.J. Williams, Brandon Marshall, et. al.
1:40 P.M. MST: On the recent rash of penalties: “It’s a little bit unusual. Crowd noise had something to do with it, but we practice with crowd noise.”
1:41 P.M. MST: When asked whether he questioned the scheme, he said, “Well, we’ve adjusted already … we did it against Pittsburgh, obviously against Green Bay and this week as well. Anytime you’re not effective in something, you adjust the scheme.”
1:42 P.M. MST: Says he is satisfied with the work of Jim Bates. “Obviously … there’s work that needs to be done.”
1:42 P.M. MST: Said that Patrick Ramsey “played exceptionally well,” and cited “poor protection” from up front on the fumble that he lost for a touchdown.
1:43 P.M. MST: “If Jay’s not able to go, obviously we won’t go into the game with one quarterback,” Shanahan said of the possibility of adding another passer to the 53-man roster.
1:44 P.M. MST: “Sometimes you do have to adjust, depending on what type of team you’re playing,” Shanahan said when asked whether he would adjust the pass-protection schemes to account for the higher volume of younger players up front on the offensive line.
1:45 P.M. MST: “It’s not a magic formula … We’ll go back and work on the things we’ve done poorly,” Shanahan said.
1:45 P.M. MST: Thought Andre Hall provided “a spark” and that he was “a natural” on kickoff returns.
1:46 P.M. MST: On the AFC West race: “Well, you never know how a season’s going to go … There’s been teams 1-5 that go to the championship game. That’s just the nature of this game … You’ve just got to take it day by day. We know what we’re doing poorly. We’ve got a long ways to go. We’re not there yet.”
1:46 P.M. MST: “I think that if you ever say you’re rebuilding, you’re giving yourself an excuse for not having success right now … Do we have some young players? Yeah, but that doesn’t mean we have to rebuild … We’ve got some new people at new positions, but that doesn’t mean we’re rebuilding.”
1:48 P.M. MST: On why Mike Leach is the emergency quarterback: “He’s a smart guy … he can run the offense, he can at least hand the ball off.” Shanahan did say that it still would be a “scary situation” if the long snapper/tight end/fullback ever had to take snaps.
1:49 P.M. MST: And that’s it for today.

First of all, I want to jump on the Jim Bates “get rid of em” band wagaon. Some of you make the point that when Bates came to town he got rid of a lot of talent. Couldn’t agree with you more. Since the Pre-Season I’ve stated over and over again, this was the biggest off-season mistake made. The defense wasn’t really broke, with the exception of a solid pass rush and another shut-down corner. Unfortunately with the death of D-Williams, a shut down corner was added. One problem fixed. The other thing is that Shannahan being a HEAD COACH or Manager of his team per say, should of noticed that Coyer’s defense did not encounter severe let down against the run. In Fact the defense was in the top 5 against the run. So as a manager he should of managed his coaches better. Gave advice where it is necessary, advised Coyer to design a more aggressive defense against the pass, more blitzing, and the corners would be able to play more man coverage. Shannahan did not do that, he was selfish and wanted his BUDDY, Gates. He let a Good defensive cordinator go to replace him with a friend. Thats a Bunch of CRAP!!!! Shannahan needs to take full responsibility for dismantiling the Team. Now in defense of these coaches, they coach and players play. They are not getting it done. They play with lack of enthusiasim, lack of discipline, and lack of heart. The players on this team need to look deep within themselves and decide what kind of men they are. They are not a TEAM, rather individuals who are internally pointing fingers at each other and are letting up on each play, expecting someone else to do their job. Also far to many excuses about injuries. Patrick Ramsey stepped up and played a hell of a game when he was called upon. It was the starters who couldn’t figure out how to catch the ball, even though it hit them right in the hands. Enough is enough, no more excuses, shut up and play football!!!!!! Sometimes your just not that good and the other team really is that much better that you. Go Broncos. I always have and always will be a fan, but I don’t have to like what I see and hear. Part of me wishes these blog statements could be read by the team. Although not sure they need much more negativity.
you should fire your defensive coordinator and go back to the old way, remember, attack, attack, attack, attack, dont give the offense an inch.
you have good players, quit taking them in and out every play,no wonder their so confused.
We do NOT ATTACK anymore on defense! The fine defensive backs we have are on an island. No pressuer on the quarterback, we fail. The running backs take a 5 yard run to us, and fake our big guys (that are to slow) out of their jocks! Jay will be fine, if Shanny does not ruin him. I am excited about Selvin Young. With some improvement in the line will help both players. We need LEADERS not complainers!
its amazing larry coyer as defensive cordinator helps our defense to remain in the top five stats, but oh no lets not give him a dre bly to help the DB situation,or a jarvis moss to help rush, fire him and bring in a new defense with all new players, and by the way mr. bowlen, coach shannahan, is there a reason players like adams and rice are available, its called there EXpenable that means the teams that released them are did not resign them have better younger faster and less expensive players to fill there roles, if you sold the men that helped solidify our defense, then give your younger players and younger veteran players like engleberger more time all he has done when given a chance is make plays, I know before any say it I am not a coach or a player, But I do coach high school ball, and have lived football all my life, and watching this years team is a joke, play calling is so predictable you have an explosive back like young but we do not utilize him what one maybe two screens a game, dump a pass to him he has shown is skill in that area, stokley everyone knows in the slot he is dangerous but because of injuries you move him out wide put martinez there, again a young player making plays put stokley back in the slot, daniel graham sorry people he drops to many passes,i apologize but it is nice to vent and see even you great fans here have to agree if we the simple people here see whats going on why can’t the organization, I have read many times the blogs here you are the best of fans, and very smart football people
OK, OK, OK, let’s talk about the offense shall we???? Our offense is it’s own worst enemy. Lets not forget that the defense was playing pretty good until late in the 3rd quarter. The offense never gave the defense anything to protect. The offense was so pathetic in this game that even if Cutler was in at QB it wasn’t going to be pretty. The offense reminds me of some women I’ve date in my early years. Hot one minute, cold the next. They are completely and continuously inconsistent. The problems on defense last year certainly didn’t out weigh the offenses in-ability to score. The play calling is so predictable it’s rediculous. Also here is a surprising stat. For the Broncos play action works 58% of the time in games. Oh but the “Mastermind” Shannahan completely abandons this in every game. The Broncos more than likely won’t have a running back gain 1,ooo yards. Travis Henry is so banged up, and the OL is too. Every team stops the run and makes the offense one dimentional. And the sweep plays are taking way to long to develop. Lets face it Bronco fans, this will soon be a season to forget. I see no sudden changes to this TEAM. If you realize anything, this year if the Defense plays good the offense blunders, if the offense plays good ( a couple of games ) the defense blunders. The Broncos have not beat an apponent this year without the leg of Jason Elam. They don’t have the ability to deliver the knock-out blow that takes teams out of the game. I’ll tell you another thing, against Detroit I noticed a lot of Broncos getting knocked around. They were absorbing hits and blocks and for the first time in my life I saw a defense that was playing scared and confused not just undertalented. This year is a Team effort, they win as a team and loose as a team. Playing from behind all the time isn’t helping either.
hey everyone, glad to be back
for the love of god I hope we can stomp KC. LJ is a 50 50 no show
Bobcat, the organiztion knows, they just don’t want to go public and say, we were stupid, we fired a good coach and replaced him with a worse one. Shannahan won’t tell you he did this for selfish reasons. Jim Bates was a friend. The organization made their bed with that choice and now must lye in it. Unfortunately we as fans have to lye in it as well. What a Bunch of BS. My fear is this team will get worse. Remember the Rubix Cube, if you tried to fix it you just made it worse. Well thats my fear here. Too much fixing is jumbling everything up. It will take the right person to step into place and fix the cube. My hope is Shannahan can do it. Not sure if he’s the answer at this point. Many years of success has bought loyalty to Shannahan, however change isn’t always so bad. Give him this year and next, then it’s time for new blood.
How many years can you say the team is rebuilding?? its benn 8 or 9 yrs now.. I think you can come up with a cure for cancer in less time?
Its time for change now> remember shanny dumping plummer right before playoffs , so its never to late to give up on the team..
Hey LLP: I’d be wanting a break too if I kept getting pumled because my line wasn’t doing their job and blocking for me.

Andrew why won’t Shanahan admit he made a mistake with the defensive hire and fire him now. This was obviously a bad hire for the team, it’s not working, seperate now while the season can still be saved. The team has defensive talent, why is he being so stubborn?
LPP THANKS FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT YOU ARE A GREAT BRONCO FAN.
WITH A FAN LIKE YOU. WHO NEEDS ENEMYS !1! . IM GLAD JAYS OK.
GO BRONCOS!11.
forget how much we paid for bly! put foxworth in there. I can’t stand watching dre. it’s sickening. i could pick and tackle better then he can and i’m pretty out of shape. he is down right pathetic. shanahan isn’t going anywhere and everyone just needs to toughen up. the D-line needs to try harder. where is the love for the game? these guys just don’t have it. i don’t even want to watch the broncos unless cutler is playing. he is the only one who is playing to win on the offense. i love my broncos but i couldn’t even watch the second half of the game because i got kicked out of the bar. i wasn’t even drinking. apparently your not allowed to throw chairs around. the lions defense scored more then our offense? what the hell is going on? the afc west is so bad we actually still have a chance at the playoffs but we won’t get very far with this team. i still bleed orange but this year couldn’t get much worse. WAKE UP BRONCOS!
CUTLER IS FINE, WE NEED A NEW HEAD COACH, SHANAHAN´S ERA IS OVER
LPP.. Your post makes no sense.. Jay did not insist his leg was broken, he said on comcast that it was just being checked out by MRI.. and that hopefully he would be right back out there!.. obviously you haven’t followed him since Vandy days.. that is one of the very few times I have seen him not get right back up even though he is getting his head knocked off out there.. So glad your MRI was negative Jay and hope to see you in KC!!!!!!!!
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps.. Coach Shanahan you are awesome too!
Broncomania56, the Rubix Cube analogy is awesome!
I to am sick and tired of watching average running backs scoot through our line. I have never seen such a trio of linebackers as we have at the present time. Webster, Gold, and Williams. I would be interested to know how many tackles they have between the three of them. If Bates can’t see this then he don’t belong in Denver. A place that has always boasted exceptional linebackers.
I like Mike but maybe its time to move on. After all he is the main man when you talk to Pat Bowlen. Maybe they both should go. Maybe Invesco Field was a bad idea. Did we really need a new stadium to lose in!!!!!!!!!!
I THINK THE LOSS OF WARRICK HOLDMAN WAS BIG HE IS A VERY GOOD LINEBACKER EVERY GAME . WE REALLY NEED A LEADER ON THE DEFENSE.
LETS PLAY LIKE WE DID AGAINST PITTSBURG AGGRESIVE.
GO BRONCOS 111.
Plummer vs. Cutler….there’s a great comparison! The man loved football so much he retired!
I totally agree with the concerns regarding our defense. I still believe our offense can get the job done. Stokely, B Marsh are coming into their own & special teams is getting better.
Going back to the D. Someone here made the points of attack, attack, attack. I agree. Send them all! You can’t stop the run, so you might as well stack the line. Make the wonder boys defend themselves. Get Lynch back out there and tell him that his wife is cheating on him and watch the hits
Seriously thougth 3 - 5 and only 1 game out!!!
Well, hell…..GO GET EM’ BOYS!!!!
Hey Mr. Mason, thanks as usual for the blog. I just heard a rumor that there were a bunch of people released and added today. Can you give us an idea on those moves? Thanks…
Man i’m glad Jay is ok….we can’t win without he is our only chance…i still believe in my broncos and I think we aer still going to win this division….LJ is doubtful for this week so we have a good chance……Lets go Broncos!!
