Ready to Step Up

November 6th, 2008 - 11:08am by Ryan Torain

We’re here in Cleveland, I’m writing at the hotel. I’m just staying in my playbook right now and getting ready for tongiht.

The backs have had a rough stretch the past couple of days.

First the showing against Miami was inexcusable. The effort was definitely there, we just didn’t get it done.

Then a couple days later we lose both Andre Hall and Mike Pittman. ‘Dre’s been here for a year and Pittman coming in with his experience, being a veteran in the game — it’s definitely been a huge blow to us, losing two backs in the same day and also in a short week. It puts a lot of pressure on the backs, but we’ve been coached up and we’re prepared for the game. We’ve just got to handle adversity.

The rest of the backs are rallying around the situation. Guys have to step up, make big plays and win the game. I’m most definitely ready to be one of those guys. I’ve been waiting for a long time. I feel like I can be a huge contributer to this offense and get this win.

I got my first action in the NFL last week and it was awesome — the outcome wasn’t what we wanted, but I felt like I was ready. I don’t feel like the speed was different because I have been going through practice. I went through training camp and I caught up during the OTAs. It was great being out there. Like everybody says, I got my feet wet a little bit. I just have to stay focused and stay ready for when Coach calls my number.

I have felt a little bit of, I don’t want to say pressure, but it was tough when I found out ‘Dre and Mike were out. But I can’t play like a rookie. I’ve got to play like a veteran, know how to handle adversity and get it done. Like I told you all before, I’ve been preparing all along so that I’m a veteran when I got back from my injury, and I’ve got to prove it on the field.

I think I can carry the load. I got back healthy with rehab and treatment and stayed up with my conditioning, so however many times they want to give me the ball I can handle it.

The backs aren’t proud of last week, but we’ve got a chance to re-energize the running game today. Hard work pays off. We just have to stay focused and good things will come.

  8. cornersfan says:

You’re starting tonite!! :) So exciting!! I am really excited for the game tonite. And I am definitely hoping for something good. Its been hard on us fans the past few games. Get in there and tear up Cleveland!! Don’t forget to salute everyone back in Broncos Country tonite!!

  9. 07elway says:

Yep, that’s the first thing that needs to be corrected tonight – ABSOLUTELY NO TURNOVERS!!! We can’t afford it anymore. This is the time to learn from our mistakes AND correct them. We’ll never have a “perfect” game but we need to come pretty darn close to that tonight. We can’t make a bunch of mistakes that hands over points to Cleveland. That’s where we start to fall apart and by the time we appear to correct that its too late the game is over and we lose. I can’t take another loss that is caused by turnovers. And with the ATV all fired up and ready to go tonight I truly truly believe that problem will be majorly corrected. We need you Ryan to help push this team in a new direction. You’re going to be a major factor in our future success. I believe in you – make us proud!!!!

That covers offense and as for our D, we all know they need to stop the run. If we don’t have any turnovers on our part, stopping their run will be our 2nd biggest key to winning this game and keeping their score to a very low status. The younger players filling in for some VERY BIG shoes will have to do just that – step up and prove themselves worthy of this team and league. I want to see Mile High Magic back on both sides of the ball but these players have to have the will-power to do it. They’ve got to come into this game so hungry we look like a whole new team. We need to leave people wondering “where did that come from?” We’ve got to get on top and stay there. A special message for our D – DON’T GET SOFT!!! Put those really mean and hungry faces on and keep ‘em there till the game is over. Just because we get ahead there’s no excuse for backing off, you still have to do your jobs till that clock says 0:00 in the 4th quarter. You play to your fullest potential from start to finish.

And another thing, try to lay off of getting so many penalties. Our mistakes come first in how we play and if we win or lose but penalties have become our enemy just as much as turnovers. Try not to do anything that will back us up from any good field position we get. That rests on the shoulders of the zebras more, I get that, but some of the penalties we’ve gotten were our fault and have cost us some very good field positions, resulting in a punting situation and no points.

Go get some Brownies tonight – I’m excited to see a more put together team tonight for us. We need it and we need it BAD. We HAVE got to win this game!!!

    Have faith…
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!

  34. SuperBowl_32 says:

    Hey Ryan,

Hope the injury from last night isn’t too serious and that holding you out was just a precaution.

You did great while you were in. It was good to see that ground game again.

And what a comeback in the 4th quarter.

Take care now – you’ve got a few extra days to recover.

What a gutsy game that was with no healthy running backs out there.

Now I can go to work & tease the guys here at the Cleveland airport about how My Bronco’s beet the Brownies with no running backs & 2nd string linebackers in there!

    Shame on me! LOL…..

  38. RSH says:

Mr. Torain, all I can say is, you have horrible luck. The foot injury at ASU, the elbow injury in training camp and now the ACL tear.

You looked great out there last night, but when I saw your leg bend the way it did on your final carry of the night, it did not look pretty. Best wishes to you in getting your knee rehabilitated and being completely healthy come training camp. The Broncos and their fans are going to miss you on game days.

  39. broncfan99 says:

i think you looked fantastic lastnite.i wish you the best of luck in your rehab and cant wait till we get to see you on the feild next year

  40. cornersfan says:

  41. baileythebronco says:

bad news man, im happy you got in the endzone, be proud keep the mindset you had the whole first half man. You were pushing them guys over man. the guy talking on the browns made me mad, he was just mad cause a rookie was running him over. good luck ryan.

  42. navy_bronco_fan says:

That’s a tough break, man. Sorry to hear about your knee. If it wasn’t for bad luck you wouldn’t have any luck at all, huh? Well, keep your head up and take care of yourself. You will be missed the rest of the season.

  43. JayCutler4MVP says:

  44. Torain ATV fan says:

    Hey Ryan,

I am so disappointed that you got hurt. You showed us all what you are capable of. I hope you keep your head up and work hard too come back at 100%. Can’t imagine what you are feeling.

  45. Carlsbadbronco says:

Hang in there, my friend. Lots of love going out to you from a lot of folks – you’ll be back, we’ll be waiting, and you’ll be pounding out the yards we’ll need, no problem.

It’s a tough karma to go through, but you’ll do it with flair.

  46. raidrhadr says:

Tough break Ryan. As soon as you got rolled up on I knew it wasn’t good. You looked good on the touches you got though. Thought that was TD out there on those cut backs. Popped off that 19 yarder in the 1st qtr….sweet. Hope you have a good rehab. We’re all behind you and look forward to your speedy return. Peace and grease.

  47. xlilmixedup33x says:

ryan torain, u are the future. u carried the ball like what only 7 times? but in that small glimpse u showed the nation what u were all about. the broncos will keep u in their future. i couldnt imagine what ur going thru right now, but stay strong cuz next year ur gonna come out even stronger. we all love u and we’re all praying for u. keep ya head up homie

  48. Al Wilson 4 Mayor says:

    Ryan-

I hope you are not giving in to discouragement. I’m sure that injury was a big disappointment to you. Keep your chin up and may the Lord bless you. Remember having a hopeful attitude will help the healing process.

There are alot of us that are looking forward to you coming back next year. Kepp your chin up man!

  49. SlvrSurfRidr says:

Keep your head up kid – learn as much as you can, next season is coming quicker than you think. Talk to Jarvis, dude was out most of last season

  50. Bronco*n*kansas says:

Ryan, I felt sick to my heart when I saw the guys coming at you from behind. I knew the instant the hit took place you were in a bad place. I know you were looking forward to giving your all to this broncos team. I stillfeel you are the future of this franchise. I know you will work hard to get back by next traingni season. I am planning on taking acation during the start of Trainging camp next year, maybe I can get to see some workouts and see you getting ready then.

I know in my gut that you are going to do great things for the Broncos. I had the same feeling a few years ago when a rookie working his way onto the practice squad and then into his first game. That first catch that Rod Smith made was a td and I tiold my family, that is going to be one great receiver for Denver. I said the same thing the other night when you were running.

I am praying for a good surgery and a quick healing time. Kepp your spirits up and if you need to vent, just come blog us or email us if you need. I hope you realize that we feel and hurt just as you do. At least those of us that are true fans at heart. Remember it is just like anything in life, there are bumps and hills, then it smoothes out to the flat road where you have a place to go flat all out and let it loose. IO see smooth sailing and you going at mach3 in the future.

Hey I tell, I am not the only one to see your future and what talent looks like, as the Poll for photo of the week shows, Torain is going “Up and Over!!!”
