No Decision Yet for Lynch

January 28th, 2008 - 6:29pm by Andrew

John Lynch

A larger-than-usual crowd was at John Lynch’s monthly ceremony to honor local student-athletes, but he knew that the increased turnout wasn’t for his “Salute the Stars” program.

“I’m sure you guys want some other information,” he said.

As it turned out, there was little new information to offer. Six days after being named an injury replacement to the AFC Pro Bowl roster, Lynch still has not finalized his plans for the 2008 season.

“I haven’t made that decision yet,” he said. “I’m not being evasive or anything; I’m just being true with you guys. I haven’t come to that time where I’ve made a decision yet.

“When I know, you guys will know.”

Watch the video below to see what Lynch had to say:

“I feel great. I still love the game,” he added, “but I think that will be the case if I’m 50 years old.”

Lynch acknowledged that he hadn’t done much thinking about the decision. He said he took his family on a ski trip and focused on responsibilities around the home, while also watching the ongoing playoffs as a fan.

But when Lynch does ponder the issue, he doesn’t plan to protract the process.

“Obviously I’m not going to let this thing go on forever,” he said. “I’m a person who craves certainty in my life, anyway.”

Although he’s a step slower it’d be great to have him on the team to mentor whoever gets drafted. The defense needs help all over except at cornerback. I’ve heard the critics about Balmers knees and so forth but the fact is the guy’s not slipping past the 15th pick if he checks out ok on everything. He was a beast in the ACC this year and he’s an instant run stuffer. I’m still not sold on Phillips so he’s really going to have to blow upu at the combine to get my attention. An OT isn’t a sexy pick…but if he’s as good as advertised we can’t pass on him.

  2. vegasbronco42 says:

I know this isn’t the most popular opinion around here, but give it one more year! Draft Phillips, and let Lynch mentor him while he gives us one more year of being the baddest man on the field!

  3. vegasbronco42 says:

Agree on the OT hrdnokd. I have heard great stuff about Clady from BSU. I wonder if Parcells wants Travis and Javon in exchange for the #1 (Dorsey). Although, #1 DTs have not fared so great in the grand scheme of things over the last 15 years I guess…

  4. bronx2729 says:

Phillups mentored by Lynch would be awesome. I feel same about Balmer as you do about Phillups. I’m not sold on him and have to see how he does at the combine. Denver has shown interest in Rivers and Connors-maybe they are thinking LB first and DT second.
Would love to see Ellis drop, but he has injury issues and has maxed his frame and is undersized. I personally like Dre Moore and think Denver could get him in the 2nd. Have to see what happens with Walker and Henry first. One or both of those guys o and this draft will look alot different for the Broncos.

  5. ramboskithefan says:

why do all u fans keep thinking anybody but us wants an aging, injury prone wideout like javon,,,and a pot smokin slug like henry…i like both of them..but nobody would ever give a first for either, let alone the first pick in the draft…please……Im from boise and a huge boise state fan…Clady is good..but did have his troubles against the big teams….GA,OAklahoma,OR st. but he is still good..but i hope denver doesnt get him….i mean G foster was from GA and played good in college and sucked in the pro’s….lets please get sum people that can play right away…damn this mentor crap…we need talent and speed…i think we can have one of the leagues fastest teams next year!!

  6. jmonk says:

i dont think denver needs to draft a d lime man we have dumervil(sure i spelt that wrong) and ekuban not to mention moss will come back and crowder will only get better we need to draft s and olb’s unless by some miracle al wilson gets signed back then we can move dj back outside and then all we have to worry about is o line dont forget tom nalen aint so young any more

  7. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

I’m willing to have Lynch with the Broncos as long as he wants to be there and can function properly while on the field. He’s already had an exceptionally long career for a safety and whatever he decides, I’ll support him. Yes, Kenny Phillips is exactly what the Broncos need, with he and Lynch together, perhaps they can be a modern day Dennis Smith-Steve Atwater type duo, at least for a year.

  8. Superchop7 says:

Lynch is an extremely intelligent player, I hope he stays.

Agreed. Considering we’ve seen two Pro Bowlers (Randy Moss and Chris Chambers) traded for much less recently, I’d say there’s little beyond a 3rd-rounder Denver could get for either unless they managed to totally fleece someone. Still, gold is where you find it. It’s not impossible to parlay anyone into a lucky break.

The problem here is that “Broncos” and “lucky break” don’t usually go together in a sentence this millennium.

  10. hrdnokd says:

I think we’re going to end up trading back in the draft, not too far back but enough to warrent someone giving up a 3rd round pick. Chicago or Detroit may be looking to move up if guys like Brohm and Clady are still on the board. Trevor Laws is starting to look like a solid 2nd round pick as well, and he can penetrate the pocket in addition to stuffing the hole. If Shanny trades back I expect him to draft Connor and move D.J. back to the weak side. God I hope we blitz like hell this season! JMONK I don’t know what you’re smoking but put it down and never touch it again. Not one of those guys plays DT that you mentioned. I read this morning Henry’s trying to stay in Denver, let’s hope he comes back for 1/4 of his orignal salary.

  11. 07elway says:

I really hope he comes back for at least one more year… he’s just so much apart of this team and in many ways he’s a crucial player that we need. He may not have had the best season this past year but the defense can’t rely solely on one person’s talent. They need to be a defense as a team, and when that happens they will ALL shine. So if some miracle like that can happen where our guys can figure out that they need to show some teamwork than Lynch coming back will be one awesome sight to see at work. Either way, whatever he chooses, I’ll support him but if he doesn’t come back that’s really going to hurt since he’s got the kind of talent that’s hard to replace.

I’ve said this before but its simply true… I can barely handle Smith leaving but if I have to deal with both Smith & Lynch going in the same offseason, I’m going to go bananas!!!!!! I’m already feeling blue knowing Smith won’t be back – an irreplaceable talent as well – but there might be a small window of hope he could stay with the team if alot of people agreed he should coach. I’d love to see him coach. Well, this has been my two cents worth, I really want Lynch to come back. You rock #47!!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  12. RNST says:

    PLEASE DON T GO JOHN.
    SHANAHAN GO HOME:

  13. Dream says:

    Please retire.

  14. smithalltheway says:

lynch come back one year you might be part of something great. shanny knows what happend and how to fix it so next year we will return to the post season.

  15. bronx2729 says:

I have to agree to agree with Rambo about Ryan Clady. The o-line did’nt play that badly for thier first year together and for some of them-thier first year. Nalen is getting old but could help mentor these guys into learning how to play more cohesively. I have not heard anything about Hamilton recovering. His return would really solidify a line that I think will come together this year with or without Nalen and Hamilton. Considering all the changes-this line had, they did pretty well last year and will be better this year. No Clady!
I wouldn’t mind Travis in Denver with Selvin and Hall as long as he takes a pay cut and stays healthy. I would love to see Walker stay as long as he does the same. Testing the market should bring him to his senses.
I would like to see Lynch stay, but Denver will have to keep someone in to cover when he’s in because he has lost a step. That person that would be in there takes away from the rush, let alone the blitz. I love him, but he’s not what he used to be, He would be a great mentor for a great athlete like Phillups and Dre Moore and Frank Okam would be available later.
This team needs a dominant DT. Yes, Dumervil-Crowder and Thomas will be better this year. Crowder and Thomas will be in better Pro shape and they will work better together. We’ll see about Moss. Ellis is trying to prove that his maxed frame will not matter in the Pros and he also has injury history, as well as Balmer. I f Phillups and Ellis are gone, Denver should trade down and they could get Connor and possibly still get Balmer.
Mason, any news on Hamilton? Henry? Walker?

  16. lynch4prez says:

how can you some of you guys even talk about wanting lynch or shanahan to leave, lynch is one of the best at his position aging or not, his numbers are way down but that can be accounted for from the old def. coordinator, to have lynch retire would be such a great set back for the defense, you cant expect a rookie to come in a compete at the level lynch does its nearly impossible.. And shanahan is a great coach top 5 in the league easily, the team is young and shanahan runs a unique offense, given time and sticking together this offense next year will be great, top 10 run and pass.. what needs to happen for next year is, stay healthy, run a normal defense like we used to, not some wacky doper scheme no one has played in before and get better in the red-zone which will come from starters staying healthy

  17. wormyblackburny says:

Lynch is waiting to see what we do as far as free agency/draft to decide what our chances of competing for a championship are. Can’t say I blame the guy for taking a while to decide.

  18. jmonk says:

we dont need a “stud” dt sorry to say it but weve had guys that were supposed to be great at that spot and they wernt we need a solid dt and more pressure from then ends then just dumervil idiot

  19. jmonk says:

which we will get when those guys come back and if our olbs are taken care of and in the end i think the new d-cord. will fix alot of stuff that was wrong this past season anyways. we might(big might) get away with the same personal we had last year if we have some more original play calling on both sides of the ball. i could be biased but i dont think any player we have is all that bad ive seen every backup guys thats came and filled in make a decent play or at least hold their own which is more then some teams can say.

  20. jmonk says:

in the end i think we just need solid d line guys that they dont have to be super great just do their jobs, then we can blitz the line backers more and let our great man coverage corners and safties handle the rest, this is a crazy question i know but once his shoulder is better i wonder if engleberger might not be a decent dt, the guy is a great tackler even when hes hurt i wonder if we could just slide him over any bodys thoughts on this?

  21. bronx2729 says:

Engleberger is too light to play inside. I think Denver has a lot of good players also, and felt the playcalling was questionable to thier skills. However, Slowik took over in week 5 and Denver still didn’t stop the run. Denver needs one more up front-someone who is going to stop the run and put pressure on the QB. A guy like that will make the secondary great again.
    A perfect offseason-
DT Shuan Rogers from Detroit-Denver Deals well with them
    RD 1-S Kenny Phillups
    RD 2-OLB Quentin Groves
    RD 4-WR Harry Doulglas
    RD 4-RB Kevin Smith
    RD 5-DT Nick Hayden
    RD 5-OLB Jordan Dizon
    RD 7-WR Anthony Aldridge
    RD 7-FB Jerome Felton

  22. ilovebaily24 says:

I would love to see lynch back for another year if for nothing else than mentor for whoever is gonna be playing in his place.

  23. BLWWbroncos says:

    Stay Lynch!!!!

  24. ramboskithefan says:

lynch would be great as a situational player…running downs and goal line…short space he would thrive…still a great run stopper and it would be nothing but positive to have in the locker room and show how a pro plays for whom ever we get to play his spot..

i hope we crush phillip rivers into the ground next year…..its going to be a tough year but i have confidence they will be back …Denver that is!

  25. G funk says:

Hope lynch stays. Did anybody here anything on Al Wilson

  26. jwalkbmarsh says:

Is Al Wison signed yet?… now is he? Come on and sign him already, he will make an imidiate(sp) impact. I would like to see Henry another yr. Walker better be in a Bronco jersey this fall. Denver would be idiots!!! to move him. Jonh Lynch will be back ( with Wilson) . Peace!

  27. TruBroncFan07 says:

First off I really hope Lynch stays and helps turn the Defence around next year. I think we should trade down in the draft. Experts like Mel Kiper are saying that Kenny Phillips is strarting to slide down the rankings a bit. Maybe we could trade down with 49ers and pick up there lower first pick and high second round pick. We could then pick up Dan Conner in the first round and Kenny Phillips in the second round. That would be value.

  28. Superchop7 says:

    Mel Kiper is an idiot.

Phillips is going round 1 pick 11-16.

  29. 2champ4 says:

I think we should trade down too, but I would take Phillips over Dan Conor.

  30. hrdnokd says:

We may be able to trade down and still get a player that can start right away. Detroit needs a starter at the O line position and they want to get rid of Rogers. Why not swap positions with Rogers in the middle? Chicago will also need a QB. Then you have Carolina sitting there and they need either an OT or a QB. Someone is going to want to move up. I think Shanny’s going to draft some interior D linemen with those 4th round picks.

  31. Broncostildadayidie says:

Everybody who says that Kenny Philips would be a great fit is an absolute… genius. I hope Mel Kiper is right and Kenny Philips does slide down. Then we can trade down and get him. With two good safeties we could do what the Redskins did this year before Sean Taylor died. No one would be able to throw deep they’d be scared. When the secondary does good it makes the front 7 look alot better, but then again vice versa, look at the sorry ass chargers. They’re front 7 is so good that it makes young guys like Cromertie look like gods. God Forbid Shanny get Adibi. He’d be great as well. He’s a run stopper and he can fly down the field. I just hope what ya’ll say about us getting Shaun Rogers is true. I’m so ready to wear my Broncos jersey all over San Diego when we put that $%$@head Rivers in the ground.
That’s how the Broncos should do!!
Go Orange and Blue, Broncos til da day i DIE!!!!!!

  32. LetPlummerPlay says:

From all of us….John retire seriously, come on, you don’t see Mccaffrey out there trying to relive the glory. Retire bro, retire.

  33. LetPlummerPlay says:

And since I’m in a bad mood right now, Lynch4prez….What are you, an idiot?

  34. superchop7 says:

Problem is, the two guys I want (Okam and Harrison) will probably go in the 3rd.

The guys available in the 4th just don’t excite me. Not an upgrade.

  35. superchop7 says:

    And so will Schmitt.

We may have to go Moore in the 2nd and Schmitt in the 3rd.

    Then again.

Our guys can maneuver like few teams can on draft day.

What we really need is a 1st and 3 3rd round picks.

  36. hrdnokd says:

There’s a good chance Shanny will be able to move around and get into the 3rd round. Anytime you have 2 4th round picks you have room to move. I’d rather keep the extra picks in the 4th round though to be honest, we seem to have great luck in that round here lately. I honestly do believe we’ll be moving back though with one of those 3 teams while either acquiring more talent or picks. They all have a serious hole to fill and Denver is sitting in a spot several teams will be trying acquire. And seriously LPP, you feel you can rip a guy for wanting Lynch to not retire? SERIOUSLY?!!? You of the Plummer man crush are criticizing someone, what a joke. When you heal your broken heart and quit bitching about Cutler maybe the rest of us will take your comments a little more seriously. Until that time you’ll be considered the annoying kid at the back of the class yelling for no reason while secretly yearning for acceptance by your peers.

  37. precisiontint says:

I also think he should retire. A great player who now we have to kind of protect in the defense because of his lack of range. His mind is still great but his body cannot catch up. He has a great family, an all-pro career, and a Super Bowl ring to go with it. Go out with the class you deserve. Before you get hurt. Bad.

  38. samparnell says:

It would be nice to see a nice person retire with more rather than less health.

  39. samparnell says:

2008 Draft: What hurts is not having a 3rd. bronx2729, I think we still have the 6th because Jimmy Kennedy didn’t make the team. Correct me if I’m wrong. Biggest question: Are J.Walker and T.Henry going to be with the team? Keep in mind that Javon had other issues besides physical injuries. With the right kind of support from coaches and teammates, he can still play. All things taken into consideration his outburst can be forgiven. Travis is a bigger question. Can he take a handoff with his arm up and not get blown up by a linebacker on his way to sacking Cutler? If both could be traded for a mid-to-late 3rd or a very early 4th, that might be OK. That scenario calls for drafting a RB and a WR of which many are available in the draft. Kind of unlikely that one team would give a 3rd for both of them w/their $$. Much can happen between now and April…NFL Scouting Combine, etc. I like the Shaun Rogers idea, but at what price and will he fit into “the secret new D-line philosophy”? It’s nice to hear Al Wilson’s name mentioned because that’s what happened to the Run-D (as well as 3rd & long, 2nd & medium, 1st down, etc., etc., etc.). I agree with those who are in favor of Kenny Phillips as a possible 1st. Let the coaches and scouts evaluate and interview. You know the last three drafts haven’t been bad and have the possibility of getting better. If a safety is 1st, I think a big-tackling backer needs to be 2nd. With all due respect to those wanting a DT in the early rounds, I just don’t share the urgency over S and LB. There are a lot of good young players on the team already. Stability on Defensive coaching philosophy, better blocking and lane running on ST, Offensive Line depth and certainty (many OTs available in the draft) and a good draft are what we need to watch for. Be patient.

  40. Dekreybroncofan says:

All I know is weather or not Lynch retires this year I would like to see us trade back in the draft and still pick up Gator S Phillips… I mean if we could get Ellis or some other big name like that by trading up by all means, but I think our best value would be Phillips. Well I guess I wouldnt mind that OL guy a lot of draft experts think we will pick up, but then again I think Ryan Harris is going to fit well there for us. So S is a bigger need, unless there is a MLB that is first day startable so we can put D.J. were he belongs.

  41. Superchop7 says:

Going safety in the first, (Phillips) lb in the second, we can either go Abidi or Wheeler. (fairly similar players)

The real problem lies in the 3rd, Okam and Harrison will go in that round. We need to figure out how to get both of them to create a stud d-line.

DT is a waste of picks in the 4th, no upgrade, just semantics, whichever fullback drops to pick 104 is probably the best move at that point.

After that, Anthony Alridge, then a punter.

My draft doesn’t address the o-line, if we get Faneca and a fullback, we will have good depth and be able to overcome inexperience at the LT position.

  42. hrdnokd says:

Here’s my problem with the logic of drafting a DT later in the draft, they simply don’t exist. Name more than 5 impact DT’s in the NFL today that were drafted after the first three rounds? Now I’d love to fill a hole in the secondary as much as anyone, but DT should be priority one, either in free agency or in the draft. Now if we get Rogers in a deal, obviously we can then focus on other needs, but a DT must be the #1 priority of this ball club. We have one starter on the D line over 300lbs. and he’s BARELY over that mark. Every line needs at least one 330lbs. monster in the middle filling the gaps. Back in the 90′s Traylor fit that description while the other linemen made the tackles. He was the only 300lbs. guy, but he filled the hole. We don’t have one right now.

  43. oldsouthstander says:

The Viklings win was, in my opinion, the second best game the Broncos played all year. However, by winning that game they went from having the number 8 pick to the number 12 pick. This could be the most costly victory the Broncos ever had. Just go throught the draft and see who’s available at 8 versus 12. A MAJOR DIFFERENCE! Let’s hope that an exceptional DT slips through the cracks and the Broncos get him at #12. Not very likely, but, it’s nice to dream.
It will be interesting to see what kind of trade the Patriots come up with for their number 5 pick. A team despeerate for a starting QB will be very eager to get that pick.

  44. oldsouthstander says:

Much is made for the necessity of a 330ish DT. while most nose tackles are in that weight range, one of, if not the best, nose tackles the Broncos ever had was Barney Chavious. Barney never even came close 300. So being less than the norm for a noser tackle should be considered, it should not rule out any prospect solely on that issue.

  45. imready says:

Most of us are in agreement that the d-line needs a tackle. Some of think we need o-line help too. For those who think anything else should come first , take a good look at the two teams in the superbowl.
I just watched the interview with Linch. He referred to the Broncos as “they” and not “we”. To me , it sounded like he was leaning toward retirement and at first I thought he should. I hope he doesn’t . I think the Broncos will be in the superbowl in two years and I’d like to see him get another ring. He may have lost a step, but if the d-line adjustment in personal really works out(who da gonna get??), it won’t matter if he lost a step. I’m hoping the fact that he made the probowl will get thinking that he can still play.
Off season moves…….trade where we are deep to teams that are deep where we are weak! Do the rest in the draft and do another outstanding job with undrafted free agents! enough said, goooooooooo Broncos!

  46. lynch4prez says:

your right letplummerplay, im an idiot, lynch should retire and shanahan should get booted, while were at it why not trade bailey and marshall for some good draft picks that will solve everything… (sarcasim) lynch retiring would set the secondary back for a few years i dont see how him hanging up his cleats helps the team.. last time i checked he’s playing in the pro bowl this weekend, the draft is over-rated to some extent, i mean how many defensive rookies are going to play in the game sunday and how many rookies period.. but what do i know im an idiot
p.s. screw you jackass go play some hand ball with plummer
