Leaping into Day 3

May 18th, 2007 - 11:18am by Andrew

I haven’t ever seen Broncos defensive linemen do a drill quite like the one shown below. Defensive line coaches Bill Johnson and Jacob Burney had each of their linemen stand in place during warmups and broad-jump their way forward with successive leaps covering about 10 yards. The drill certainly builds and rewards explosiveness, as shown below with the sequence of photos chronicling defensive tackle Marcus Thomas’ burst forward.

Ahh yes…The genious of the new coaches showing already. It is good to see when changes are made they aren’t simply for lip service, but that there is some actual evidence that things will be different….

It looks weird, but it builds lower-body strength and balance. Thomas stayed upright after landing on this sequence — or, to use gymnastics parlance, he “stuck the landing.”

We used to do a similar drill in track and field for throwing the shot and discus, except a lot of times we did it up a short slope of about 60′. It really does help lower body strength, and just as important, your “explosion”, your ability to make that intial move more quickly and powerfully. We also would set up a series of high hurdles and bound over them to work on quick recovery and exploding into the next step. Good idea to use it but 10 yards seems way to short a distance for training for football, maybe up and down the length of the field would be better.
