Keeping My Head Up

November 13th, 2008 - 3:51pm by Ryan Torain

Let me start by saying thank you for all of your support. I know you supported me all the way up to last week, and I hope you’ll keep supporting me through the rest of my rehab.

I am as disappointed as all of you that I’m not going to be out there the rest of the season, but let me just say that I most definitely plan on being ready when training camp rolls around for the 2009 season. I’ve just got to be patient like I was the first half of the season. I’ve got to stay positive and work through it, and things will work out.

Right now I’m not in pain. I can walk around without crutches. I’ve just got to go through prehab. That’s what they call the rehab before surgery. Right now the knee is pretty swollen, so I’m just icing it and doing some quad exercises to keep my leg strong. I think I meet with Greek soon to talk about surgery — I’m just trying to get out of the swollen stage.

The good news is I know what I can do out there on a football field in the NFL. I felt great. I felt like I started off a little slow in the first part, then picked it up as the game went on. I was getting more and more comfortable and I feel like it showed. It was great getting into the endzone. I couldn’t have wanted anything else more than to score a touchdown in the National Football League. Unfortunately I got sidetracked again, another speedbump in the road, but once again I’m going to just be positive and do my rehab and get back as soon as possible.

It’s tough not to feel like I’m a little snake-bitten, that this keeps happening to me. But you know what? That also means I’ve learned how to deal with it. I missed the second half of my senior year at Arizona State, but I got through my rehab and ended up getting drafted into the perfect situation in Denver. Then I hurt my elbow in training camp, but I got through my rehab and ended up starting a game in the NFL, not to mention getting into the endzone. So now I’m hurt again. But I’m going to stick through it and come out the other side even stronger, and definitely ready to go and continue making strides in my sophomore season.

You know how I always talked about coming back a vet, not a rookie? I’ll most definitely be a vet when I’m back next season. Until then I’ve got to do what I’ve been doing — just staying around the guys, staying positive. You can’t get down on yourself. It’s not a good feeling once you do.

The other good news is I have my brother living with me. He’s always going to tell me the truth and be honest with me. Family, you’ve always got to have somebody close to you around, and he’s definitely been helping me with keeping my spirits up.

I’m keeping my head up, no worries. Thanks again for all the support. I’ll check back in next week.

Keep your head up, man. It was great looking like we could run the ball, even if only for a half. Best of luck on your rehab, come back strong for next year.

    Ryan,

I feel your pain and the Broncos will miss you. You are going to be great. keep up the hard work. I’m having a son this month, i will tell him about how good you are, til he gets the chance to realize it himself. You will be good for that long. I believe that.

  4. qnpd says:

Sometimes luck is a little funny, in that instead of having a balance of good luck and bad luck, some people get through the bad luck first. Ryan, I think you’ve pretty much exhausted your lifetime supply of bad luck, so keep your head up, keep working hard, and that good luck will come in waves next season! I’ll be looking forward to seeing you in the backfield!

  5. MileHighMagic15 says:

    Ryan,
It was awesome to see you in the Browns game. That TD was awesome! Keep your head up, and I am hoping you will be our starter next year! Hope all goes well, keep writing to us fans!

  6. lomaxgr says:

It was a real shame to see you go down man, but looks like you are taking the injury like a real pro. You, Selvin and Anthony Aldridge is going to be a sick combo next year!

  7. letdamansmoke says:

Ryan, i’m glad you’re trying to keep positive about this situation. All of us fans who read your blog every week were ( and STILL are) expecting great things from you. 12 carries for almost 70 yards…in his first game as a starter!!! Stay strong my brotha and just stay on your grind doing everything you can to perfect your craft. You’re gonna be a star in this league!!

Like qnpd said, “You’ve pretty much exhausted your…bad luck.” Be patient and good things are gonna have to start going your way.

side note: in light of Travis Henry’s recent activity, i can no longer support him. I’m thinkin this is my last post as LETDAMANSMOKE

  8. TheJackal says:

It’s a shame you won’t get to play anymore this year Ryan. It was a great feeling watching you pound the rock and revitalize our underachieving ground game. But things happen sometimes that you just can’t control. Best of luck with your rehab and expect some great things from you next year. Later man and keep your chin up.

  9. CB123 says:

    Hey Train,

I think you did an awesome job in that game and I’m glad you were able to get your first NFL touchdown! Good luck on your recovery/rehab and I hope to see some more 15+ yard runs from you next year!

Ryan, Keep working hard. You and the other RB’s got a bit of a workout ahead of you. Getting better and staying focused and being positive will help other players that are playing right now. Your support and encouragement will go a long way in keeping those playing feeling like they can do what needs done.

I can tell you, I saw exactly what you saw in your runnning. First, kinda getting the settings straight and adjusting the throttle, then man it looked like you went and got another gear and was ready to ride it all year. I tiold you I voted for you on NFL.com for picture of the week 10. Looks like you got the win there. I have set that Pic as my computer wallpaper, it LOOKS AWESOME>

Get well quick and keep striving for the goal!!!

  11. 07elway says:

You’ve got all my support, although I think we need to put you in some bubble wrap or something!!

This is happening too much to you in such short time periods. And I’m so happy for you that you got to get into the endzone at least once in your 2 comeback games. You should be able to have a little peace at mind that you got that out of your system. I know we were all waiting to see #42 get a touchdown and that happened… you of all people definitely deserved it. You are a ray of sunshine for this team, your time is coming ATV… just stay positive, stay patient and you’ll be just fine. You’re spotlight on this team will come sooner than any of us think. The ’09 season will be here before we know it.

Just remember Ryan – Good things come to those who wait!!

    Always have faith…
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  12. jonahsilas says:

    Train –

You looked great out there. Work on getting healthy. We will all be here waiting to cheer you on next season. I, for one, expect you to take over #1 RB duties straight out of the gate.

You are obviously an upstanding, classy character, and the organization is blessed to have found you. Good luck with the rehab. If you get bored, come visit us over at milehighreport.com!

  13. BroncoRanger08 says:

    Ryan,
As soon as i saw you go down in the Cleveland game i knew it was bad: just the way your knee bent. Its good to hear that you are staying positive about it though. Its really easy to go down the pity road. I know next year you will be 100% and hungry for a rushing title. Just some thoughts, but i was thinking that since Shanny has compared you to TD, maybe you should study some of his film and see what he might do in the same situations. I know that nothing can substitute for experience but every little bit helps. Hell, you could even look at other Hall of Fame backs for insperation. Keep strong man, I am behind you all the way and am expecting great things from you. You have the character.

ps. What is your favorite beverage?

  14. SaloRB says:

    Ryan,
It was great to see you out there running, I swear it felt great watching you running trough defenders and making some cuts here and there. That is what all of us wanted to see you doing.
I can’t wait to see you playing next year, because I know you are going to do it great. You just showed us what is going to happen to the running game for the Broncos in many years to come.
Keep your head up and remember that we are waiting for your return.
    Salo

  15. West Coast says:

Ryan, get well and keep your spirits up. Keeping you in my prayers. Take care…..West Coast

  16. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Keep the faith and cheer on your teammates. They need all the support they can get as we face the impressive Falcons Sunday.

  17. 2champ4pickSIX says:

I have no doubt that you know what to be thinking and doing in your rehab since you came back strong after the injury your senior year, and then again strong after your elbow injury. CAN NOT WAIT TO SEE HOW STRONG YOU COME BACK AFTER THIS ONE!
You are classic proof of what does not kill you, only makes you stronger! Keep up the good work, you know what to do in those situations in the game, but a little film in the down time doesn’t hurt. Just make sure not to watch so much that it depresses you not being out there! Don’t over exhert the leg, and be ready for next year. I don’t expect we keep all 7 RB’s that we now have, I don’t know the contracts of Bell and can’t remember the other guys name. But if they are as hungry as they should be, it will be another fast lane you have to speed off ahead of for the starting job that you rightfully deserve. Get well, and be the running attack Jay needs to get many playoff victories and some super bowls!
Remember there are two keys to the zone blocking scheme, 1. make one cut and go as everyone knows. 2. be willing to run the stretch plays to the sideline even if it is only a couple yard gain or even a few yard loss, because that willing to push it sideline to sideline is what makes defenders over think and over persue, hence giving you the cut back lane for a big gain!
P.S. Who do you think the complimentary back is/should be for your running style. A good 1, 2 punch is pretty lethal now. You’ll be the 1, who will be the 2?

  18. tjames238 says:

Hey Ryan keep your head up bro. You looked good out there last Thursday. I had heard the hype but wanted to see for myself and you did not disappoint. I talked with your uncle Steve a couple weeks ago. I’m a big time Broncos fan and was in the Blind Tiger (Topeka, Ks) bar that he works in. We got to chatting it up and he told me his nephew played for Denver and was the real deal. I told him I’ll have to see it but that Shanahan was really high on you. This would have been perfect for you since everyone else is injured. Don’t sweat it bro. PreHab and then rehab after surgery and you’ll be straight.

  19. boedavi says:

Ryan, it was awesome watching you run in the first half against Cleveland. I know that another injury has got to be wearing on you, but keep your head up (as it seems like you are doing) and get through rehab. Next year, you will be back, and there will be no one who can stop the Train!!

  20. 203KillinSpree says:

    Ryan,

We are all pulling for you hard core! Get back next yr. and win the starting spot again! You have 1800 yards written all over you! But I must say, you need to get rid of #42. Go with 33 its a lucky number!

  21. Shutdown says:

    Torain–

I was at the Cleveland game, and it was great. I was so pumped to see you out there, moving the ball on the ground, doing things Denver has struggled with this year. So congrats on showing us what you’re capable of. I have no doubt you’ll come back stronger next year, ready to go, ready to get some punch in the ground game. Also, congrats on your first NFL touchdown. You’ll have a ton more, but that first one’s got to be something.

And, I mean, I can always say I was there to see it. Haha. So that’s something for me, too.

  22. Bronco_chick82 says:

    Hey Ryan,

Glad to hear that you arent letting this get you down to much…..I like that about you. Always keeping your head up and just taking one day at a time and being super positive about your situation. Glad that you have your brother there to have this to go through with as well. Always nice to have some family around.

I cant wait to see you out on that field next year!!! You will always have all my support!!

Shutdown……I am so jealous that you got to be at that game. I would have died to have been there live to see his first NFL touchdown :(

  23. cornersfan says:

That is such a bummer that you are hurt again. :/ There were about 15 of us watching the game at my cousin’s birthday party. So you can imagine it was not a quite ordeal…until you got hurt. That was sad. I though for sure the game was over. Peyton really stepped up and pulled thru for the team. He seems like a great guy. Congrats on your first start and your first NFL TD!! Keep your head up and cheer on your teammates. Ps. Say hello to Domonique Foxworth for me on Sunday!!

  24. xlilmixedup33x says:

  25. PhotoHoundAK says:

Please get back healthy Ryan – we miss you man!

    Torain,
Most of us fans have not given up hope for you. You looked AWESOME in your debut and we look forward to seeing you be our starting Runningback next season. Good luck on recovery and hope to see you at full speed come training camp.

    Mile High Salute!!!

  27. brian_schneider says:

You rehab and get well. Can’t wait to see you rush for 1000+ yds in ’09.

  28. Pratama says:

    ATV ~

You looked great in the Cleveland game. You looked like a natural in our scheme. I saw how patient you were and how good your vision was as you picked you way through the holes. I was sooooooo disappointed when you went down. I saw how you got stacked up. It sucks, because that was just bad luck. Anyone would have jacked up his knee in that same situation.

I look forward to seeing you and Anthony Alridge (I think he will be 2 or3 on the RB roster next season). That would truly be Thunder and Lightning. A nice change of pace running game. Alridge will tire them out, running all over the field and then you will run the ball down their throats.

Hang in there. Rehab, workout, spend some time around the guys so that you learn the playbook inside and out and you will hit the ground running next season and come out of camp as the starter. Sometimes life just isnt fair and some people get handed more adversity than others at certain times in their lives. But one thing you can always be proud of – you are a Denver Bronco!

    Peace!

  29. breathingorangeandblue says:

Ryan, stats don’t lie. You have something great and I can’t wait to see it next year. No matter how this season ends, we will have alot to look forward to next season. You are a beast, rehab ain’t got nothin’ on you. Keep that head up, Denver is on your side. God bless!

  30. chickennob2 says:

Great to hear you’re staying positive. Have fun living with your brother. Work your ass off through rehab, and we’d all love to see you win that job in training camp next season.

  31. iheartdavis30 says:

It was so much fun watching you play at Arizona State! We definitely support you here in Arizona and I know you’re going to do great things in Denver. I can’t wait to watch you play again next season and I hope the rehab goes well. I’ll definitely miss watching you play! God bless and keep your head up!

  32. CUTemupLER says:

Get well soon man. You’ll have your time to shine. There’s not much of a rush so don’t try too hard and feel like you must be ready by the start of camp. I’ll take a 100% healthy Torain than a 80% healthy but one that’s participating in drills and other stuff. You are full of talent. Don’t be down because of this injury just think of all of the possibilities in this team. This team is full of young talent and everyone will develop and this team will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come. This team is already good, but in a year or two this team will be great.

  33. thatsadenvertouchdown says:

It’s nice to know that you play hard out there. That’s probably why you keep getting into situations on the football field where serious injuries happen. Kinda like our Marcus Camby of the Broncos, lol.
Anyways, get well, and we’re looking forward to seeing you out there again. From what we saw, you were the back we’ve been searching for!

  34. broncosfolife88 says:

Keep your head up and realize that this is a major opportunity for you. Now you have all the time in the world to study the types of defenses that you are going to be seeing in the long career that you have in front of you. always remember that champions arent born theyre made and the ability to use adversity as an advantage is a key componet. Get healthy study hard and you will be able to come back stronger than ever and prove that you can be the best the league has seen.

  35. broncosfrance says:

It was sad to see you being hurt especially after this good start .Not even a half and out , after half a season out , it looks like a curse . Take your time , take it slow , september is far from now and the team’s gonna be real good next year so it’ll be graet for you to be part of this new era in Denver . The real things are going to start january 2010 , i’m not counting the broncos out for the championship game this season but i think we’re not totally ready , it’ll take one more year , so refresh and be ready for next year , maybe a ring is coming .

  36. BronxFan87 says:

Hey wassup man I hope you get this message because we feel your pain man, I think we’ve all fallen its just a matter of when were gonna get up, and what were going to do when we stand.

Dont worry man I’ll never jump off your band wagon im a true fan it was great watching you run you kind of look like Adrian Peterson, oh my bad i mean A.P. looks like you BEAST.

But keep your head up and your eyes open and look out for the good reason of why football isnt on track right now. So heres a question its nothing related to football but what was the last book you have read?

  37. broncfan99 says:

man you are in my thoughts and prayers…cant wait to seeyou on the field next year……keep your head up
