With one vacancy on the 53-man roster after the Friday release of Simeon Rice, the Broncos opted to bestow that precious spot upon first-year quarterback Darrell Hackney, promoting him to the primary roster on Saturday.
The move means that the Broncos will actually have 46 players in uniform instead of 45. NFL rules permit teams to dress a third quarterback with the provision that he cannot play until the fourth quarter. If he plays before then, the other two quarterbacks are ineligible to return to action.
Hackney has never before been on a 53-man roster; he spent his rookie campaign in 2006 out of football after the Cleveland Browns waived him at the end of the preseason. Denver signed the UAB product to a reserve-future contract in January and he made the practice squad for the regular season, starting for the Broncos in the preseason finale.

Good for Hackney. Now we don’t have to rely on Mike Leach for an emergency. Although I wouldn’t put it past the staff to cut Hackney any day once both quarterbacks are established as healthy. Rice won’t be missed. At times I even forget he played for us.
I think Hackney has what it takes to be a good NFL quarterback. Hopefully, we don’t need him this weekend, but in the future he sounds like a nice insurance policy.
I think this is a good move, but the shanny isn’t smart for making it he only did it cuz he had to. I thought they should’ve done it. we are one of the only teams in the league that only carries two qbs regularly. And i even used to say that when we had jake plummer if he got injured we would have been done. Plus i like hackney alot he’s tough, there’s a video on youtube where he scrambles down the field and instead of running out of bounds he stiff arm the $%#& out of this cornerback and he actually knocked down three people in the effort one of them was his own teammate who was blocking for him. And i hate ramsey. he sucks. He didn’t do anything in washington or new york. and i never expect to lose on sundays i always expect the boys in blue and orange to come through regardless but if ramsey was at the helm id be pretty upset. he’s a big part of the reason we lost so bad to the lions.

Ramsey got creamed during the Lions game also so he’s a little weezy too I think.
Ramsey’s actually healthy and ready to go … but if you have Hackney available, you can guard against disaster with both QBs.
I’ve seen Hackney play many times when UAB played Memphis. He’s an exciting player to watch. Hope we don’t need him though
I think the addition of Hackney along with Ramsey should help Cultlre out. Now a WR (like with the cailber of Randy moss) would be really great . Go Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
