Greetings from the heart of the Tar Heel State, where I’ve temporarily decamped for a weekend not of R&R, but of time with both the extended and immediate family.
Anyhow, our year-by-year look at the Broncos after the bye continues with an examination of the 1995-1999 seasons, when the Broncos won four of five after the week off.
1995:
- Bye Week: 9
- Record Going In: 4-4
- Immediately After Bye: W, 38-6 over Arizona Cardinals.
- Notes: Triumph over Arizona was first week of 3-2 stretch, but Broncos closed the season as they began for an 8-8 finish, a one-game improvement over the previous year.
1996:
- Bye Week: 7
- Record Going In: 5-1
- Immediately After Bye: W, 45-34 over Baltimore Ravens.
- Notes: Team won seven in a row following bye to sew up postseason bye week in early December.
1997:
- Bye Week: 7
- Record Going In: 6-0
- Immediately After Bye: L, 28-25 at Oakland.
- Notes: Broncos would rebound from Raiders loss with three straight wins including overtime triumph at Buffalo on a weekend where the team’s travel plans were nearly waylaid by a blizzard; team would win five of six after Raiders loss to get to 11-2 before back-to-back December losses.
1998:
- Bye Week: 7
- Record Going In: 6-0
- Immediately After Bye: W, 37-24 over Jacksonville Jaguars.
- Notes: Bye did nothing to break momentum of eventual world champions; team won seven straight after the week off.
1999:
- Bye Week: 12
- Record Going In: 4-7
- Immediately After Bye: L, 16-10 to Kansas City Chiefs.
- Notes: Addition of Cleveland Browns left the NFL with an odd number of teams (31) for three seasons; the result this year was the Broncos’ latest-ever bye to that point, allowing the team Thanskgiving weekend to rest. Team would play three playoff-bound teams in weeks after Chiefs loss, defeating two.
