Broncos-Vikings: Second-Quarter Notes

December 30th, 2007 - 2:50pm by Andrew

2:48 P.M. MST: Press box sopaipillas. I feel like I’m at Casa Bonita.

2:49 P.M. MST: A third-down stop as the quarter begins … Tarvaris Jackson rolled right and D.J. Williams was there to disrupt the play … Vikings settle for Ryan Longwell’s 22-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead.

2:52 P.M. MST: Broncos will start this drive at their 26.

2:55 P.M. MST: Selvin Young with a 19-yard gain up the left side to the Denver 45 … one play later, Denver is across midfield.

2:57 P.M. MST: Gracious … Glenn Martinez takes a shot while going for a pass … E.J. Henderson draws a personalf-oul penalty for hitting a defenseless receiver … Martinez eventually leaves the field under his own power.

2:59 P.M. MST: Two plays later, touchdown … Jay Cutler looks left and finds Brandon Marshall, who gained some separation from Cedric Griffin in the left side of the end zone … Broncos lead, 7-3.

3:01 P.M. MST: Matt Prater on the field for his first Mile High City kickoff … Adrian Peterson (!) back deep … low line drive, fielded at the goal line … and he plows through the kick coverage for 31 yards.

3:05 P.M. MST: Broncos force the Vikings into a third down … It will be third-and-5.

3:06 P.M. MST: Two consecutive third-down stops … Josh Mallard, who is becoming something of a sack-producing machine, got to Jackson after Elvis Dumervil collapsed the pocket … Broncos will take over at their 17 after a 50-yard punt goes out of bounds.

3:09 P.M. MST: Broncos quickly to their 36 after a Marshall reception and a 4-yard Young carry.

3:11 P.M. MST: Ben Leber ropes down Cutler; he waited back at his linebacker slot and then zoomed into the backfield unblocked … One play after the 12-yard loss, Cutler finds Tony Scheffler for a 9-yard pass, but it’s not enough and Denver will punt.

3:14 P.M. MST: Vikings begin at their 28 after Paulescu gets a net of 39 yards on his punt … Jackson goes back to pass, and has Troy Williamson all by himself in the open field, virtually with his own zip code to himself … and the football bounces through his hands and to the ground. A sure touchdown dropped.

3:15 P.M. MST: Chester Taylor gains 13 yards on the next play.

3:16 P.M. MST: Fumble … John Engelberger’s hit at the Minnesota 48 jars loose the football and Elvis Dumervil recovers.

3:17 P.M. MST: Next play, still another fumble … Brandon Marshall lost the football while being hit by Chad Greenway as he reversed is field to try and gain more yardage, but he managed to recover it.

3:18 P.M. MST: Nice run by Selvin Young up the left sideline for a 31-yard touchdown … but a Chris Kuper holding infraction brings it back. Kuper’s holding was what allowed Young to slip into the open field anyway; without it, Kevin Williams would have likely corralled Young for a 3-yard loss.

3:20 P.M. MST: A Scheffler reception gets a first down, and then Andre Hall picks up another first down on the next play … and then Cutler finds Brandon Marshall, who stops, starts and darts his way down to the 2-yard-line … Denver offense percolating.

3:21 P.M. MST: Young loses a yard on the first-and-goal play.

3:22 P.M. MST: Second-and-goal … Matt Lepsis is eligible as Ryan Harris checks in … but first, the two-minute warning.

3:23 P.M. MST: Touchdown … Cutler to Scheffler, just past the goal line … 14-3 with 1:54 left in the half.

3:25 P.M. MST: Peterson back to field the ensuing kickoff.

3:28 P.M. MST: Touchback as Peterson can’t field the football on the fly.

3:29 P.M. MST: Minnesota averaging 6.6 yards per rush and 3.4 yards per pass play so far … and a third-down pass goes nowhere as Taylor is swallowed by Jamie Winborn … Broncos call timeout with 1:20 left on the clock.

3:32 P.M. MST: An unnecessary roughness call on Domonique Foxworth for hitting a Viking out of bounds means the Broncos will start at their 19-yard-line.

3:32 P.M. MST: Young gains 8 yards on a pitchout to the right side, and the Broncos do not call timeout … next snap comes with 40 seconds left in the half, and Young gains a yard … Broncos making no attempt to stop the clock … They can let the clock run dry, and they will. Halftime — Broncos lead, 14-3.

  4. SuperBowlBoundBroncos says:

    LOL same here Vegasbronco

  5. andrew_mason says:

Nope, Casa Bonita is actually for real … I think Trey Parker and Matt Stone had birthday parties there while growing up.

  6. vegasbronco42 says:

Sweet! Do they really have the slide and everything?

  7. SuperBowlBoundBroncos says:

And do they also jump off the waterfalls??

  8. vegasbronco42 says:

    Hahahahahah….right, the waterfalls! I forgot about that….great stuff…

  9. afcwcDB says:

There Selvin goes trying to be a hero…can’t they just let AP run so I can win my fantasy championship?

  10. vegasbronco42 says:

Anyone else nervous about what’s going to happen if we get into the red zone?

  11. andrew_mason says:

The slide, the waterfalls, Black Bart’s Cave … it’s all there, in its schticky glory. It’s so bad it’s magnificent. We’re taking public-relations intern Jason Taylor there for his birthday lunch Friday.

  12. vegasbronco42 says:

And I apologize for the stream of consciousness I have going on here, but I would love to see Mustard given a shot at fullback next year, assuming Nate Jackson comes back healthy at Tight End.

  13. bronco4life15 says:

    yea im nervous

  14. ramboskithefan says:

thats a broncos drive right there

  15. vinster572 says:

    marshall = nasty

  16. odomsfan says:

I’ll bet dollars to donuts that Denver muffs this game. It is part of the plan to get a top 10 pick. They will still suck next year. Why not just sell the franchise and save the fans the misery. LA really needs a team. They would appreciate the team.

  17. vegasbronco42 says:

A red zone TD!!!! I am eating my words and loving it………

  18. underdog8 says:

I’d be more nervous if this game meant anything for Denver ;-)

but that was a heckuva nice drive, I will say and it ended in (gasp!) a touchdown!

  19. frohawk15 says:

k now we need someone to take over defense for the next 3 quarters so we can win this game. tomorrow is black monday and i fully expect to wake up and turn on nfl network to find jim bates unemployed

  20. underdog8 says:

Odoms, are you kidding? Or on some kind of medication? I mean, seriously…

Nice to see Philip Rivers just get smashed in the Raiders game…

  21. vegasbronco42 says:

That (Casa Bonita) info is awesome! Thanks Andrew. I really had no idea, but I can hear Cartman right now, talking about Black Bart’s cave.

  22. andrew_mason says:

“Casa Bonita … Casa Bonita … Food and fun in a festive atmosphere!”

  23. wanagi says:

yeah…rivers is suckin in the raiders game..so is lt…

  24. vegasbronco42 says:

Is that really the jingle? “it’s all there, in its schticky glory. It’s so bad it’s magnificent.” aaaaaaaaaahhahahhahahhahhahhahahhahahha

  25. underdog8 says:

    a defensive stop! on downs! {{gasp!}} {{faint}}

What else will happen, the earth splitting apart, or a plague of frogs?

  26. vegasbronco42 says:

A stop on downs with a sack!!! By someone other than Elvis!! I really like Mallard…

  27. KoobLis says:

    Dear Mike Shanahan,

Please stick to Selvin Young as our featured back, as you can see sir Mike Shanahan, because of your indecision to select a runner to be the featured back ever since Mike Anderson, our team has had a lack of running game. So I humbely bow before you and ask that we keep ONE guy in the backfield instead of your runningback by committee. Also, please get another physical reciever to help out Brandon Marshall.

  28. frohawk15 says:

when you blitz your best corner someone gets that wide open more brilliance by bates we can thank jesus he dropped it

  29. ruiteni says:

I think a healthy Javon and Stokely will be enough wide receivers to go along with Marshall Koob.

  30. vegasbronco42 says:

If Javon can come back all the way healthy (fingers crossed)

  31. vegasbronco42 says:

Not to mention Scheffler, and my favorite Nate Jackson was off to a great start catching the ball. Oh, and GREAT letter Koob

  32. wanagi says:

why couldn’t be this lucky all freakin season

  33. vinster572 says:

now the defense finally wants to stop letitng the other teams score, why couldnt they do this all year

  34. KoobLis says:

That’s if we opt to keep Javon.. By the sound of things, Javon is going to refuse to restructure his contract and it sounds like that’s what mike is going to want to do.

  35. spentonbargains says:

Broncos have to draft better and quit dumping the players they aquire!
Compare to the Dallas Cowboys over the last 10 years!

  36. vegasbronco42 says:

Good point. And we can ask Ashley Lelie who will win that kind of power struggle.

  37. KoobLis says:

We’re moving the ball, but the scarey thing is that cutler is still taking heat from defensive ends..

  38. ruiteni says:

I really hope not, we’d be stupid to let Walker go…if there’s anyone who needs to restructure his contract it’s old #20.

  39. vinster572 says:

also, now the broncos are moving the ball in the red zone, why couldnt they do this all year too?? haha

  40. underdog8 says:

Here’s a question: Should the Broncos draft a punter in the next draft? Usually the thought is get a kicker in free agency, but that hasn’t worked too well for Denver. Then again, they drafted Nick harris and then he didn’t do much so they got rid of him. Still, if there’s a Shane Lechler in the draft… (which there probably isn’t) they should take him.

Another nice drive btw. Against a good D, too. Be nice if this was the Broncos offense we saw all season.

  41. vegasbronco42 says:

Amen to that Ruiteni. Anyone know how many catches away from 100 BMarsh is now?

  42. Cloud13 says:

Marshall just needs four more catches.

  43. vinster572 says:

marshall is 4 catches away i believe

  44. frohawk15 says:

marshall is a stud ive never seen wrs break tackles like him, ever. and yeah i think henry is gone young and hall can do what he can do for the less money

  45. vegasbronco42 says:

    Awesome, thanks Cloud.

  46. KoobLis says:

Ruiteni, if I remember right, when we signed Henry we signed him on the stipulation that his contract can be nullified (correct me if I’m wrong Mason); I wouldn’t be surprised if by the time training camp rolls along #20 is gone..

Another thing.. Isn’t it wonderful when Cutler has at least a little time to pass?!?!?!

  47. vegasbronco42 says:

    and Vinster

  48. underdog8 says:

Marshall is 4 catches away from 100 now I believe. Nice. And no pro bowl to show for it.

  49. BoyTroy says:

Keep Walker, get rid of henry and use hall as the back up. With young, hall, walker, marshall, stokley, shef, and jackson cutler lead this o to huge numbers.

  50. wanagi says:

henery was the biggest waste of money…he is a waste..
