Broncos-Titans: Third-Quarter Notes

November 19th, 2007 - 8:13pm by Andrew

8:13 P.M. MST: Broncos open the half off the kickoff toucback with a 3-yard Selvin Young carry; he now has 45 yards on 11 carries tonight.

8:17 P.M. MST: After an on-field delay, Jay Cutler one-hops it to Brandon Marshall near the left sideline … which, of course, does no good in football. Broncos in third-and-7 … and they convert, as Cutler proceeds to phaser one to Marshall for 11 yards.

8:20 P.M. MST: Media-relations intern Jason Taylor has a chili dog coated in ketchup and mustard. I consider this to be a nasty, wretched collection of toppings; I would never put ketchup and mustard on a chili dog. Taylor insists, “They do this lots of places.” Where, I ask? Help me out here.

8:20 P.M. MST: Two third-down receptions for Marshall on this drive … these are his first catches of the night so far.

8:21 P.M. MST: Selvin Young very slow to rise after a 4-yard gain; he’s on his feet but is being treated on the field.

8:22 P.M. MST: Looks to me like Young might have turned his right ankle … we’ll wait for the official report.

8:22 P.M. MST: Brandon Marshall — nice touchdown reception, but very dangerous to hold the ball out like that before crossing the goal line. Maybe I’m just out of touch with modern celebrations of football, but to me, it just seems like that’s a way to get yourself in trouble. Nevertheless, the Broncos lead 27-10.

8:26 P.M. MST: Injury report — Selvin Young is fine and is expected to return.

8:30 P.M. MST: Young is getting the ball to his targets deep … but they can’t hang on. Bo Scaife couldn’t get that deep pass on second-and-10.

8:32 P.M. MST: Denver’s defense gets the stop … but Glenn Martinez gives it away on the punt return; he muffs the catch and the Titans take over at the Broncos 27 with 9:34 left in the quarter.

8:33 P.M. MST: Young makes a move in the backfield on first down that just froze Ian Gold … Young proceeds to sprint 19 yards to first-and-goal at the Denver 8 … Crowd getting noisy now at the south end … and LenDale White powers to the 4-yard-line.

8:36 P.M. MST: Young is forced out of bounds at the left sidelune at the 1-yard-line … Now third-and-goal at the 1 … Crowd roaring and on its feet … Ian Gold has the first pass rush, forcing Young back … V.Y. eludes to the left, but Marcus Thomas and Tim Crowder chase him to the outside … Crowder forces him out … but somewhere amidst the din, Denver called timeout, so there’s no play.

8:36 P.M. MST: Oy gevault.

8:38 P.M. MST: And now because the Broncos called timeout, the Titans can challenge the second down on which Young was forced out of bounds … because the third-and-goal never happened. Tennessee has challenged the play.

8:40 P.M. MST: And the Titans win the replay challenge and get the touchdown.

8:42 P.M. MST: What an odd game this has been.

8:45 P.M. MST: Broncos will begin at their 32 after a 26-yard Andre Hall return.

8:46 P.M. MST: Vince Young is probable to return with a contusion of his quadriceps muscle.

8:48 P.M. MST: A Selvin Young carry for a first down is wiped out by an Erik Pears holding penalty … and then the rookie running back is slow to arise. Fellow Texas alumnus Michael Griffin was hurt for the Titans one play earlier … the Longhorns dropping as though they’re in a slaughterhouse.

8:50 P.M. MST: Andre Hall now in for Young … Broncos have third-and-10 from the 32. Key play forthcoming.

8:51 P.M. MST: Cutler loses seven yards as Vince Fuller came untouched on a safety blitz … Todd Sauerbrun now with his first piunt of the night … he uncorks a 58-yarder … Chris Davis fumbles on the punt return, but the Titans manage to recover … Vince Young will come back in the game for Tennessee.

8:53 P.M. MST: Titans now with first-and-5 at their 44 … John Lynch and Dre’ Bly trying to marshal the fans to make more noise … LenDale White takes the carry and slams forward five yards for the first down … White starting to find a groove for the first time tonight.

8:54 P.M. MST: Vince Young to Bo Scaife for 12 yards to the Denver 39 … but of far greater significance is the fact that John Lynch was hurt and had to be treated on the field … Scaife stiff-armed Lynch, knocking his helmet back … Lynch was wincing pretty badly as he hit the ground … Domonique Foxworth now in at safety for Lynch.

8:57 P.M. MST: Another 12 yards for the Titans … now at the Denver 24.

8:57 P.M. MST: Selvin Young is questionable to return with a strained right knee.

8:57 P.M. MST: Broncos can’t recover another loose ball; Brandon Jones lost it but the Titans recovered. Titans have landed on all three fumbles this quarter.

8:58 P.M. MST: John Lynch is back in; the quarter is over.

I am not where I can watch this on tv, so I need everybody’s help. Is the Titans’ D taking Marshall out of the game, or are the plays (other than the reverse) just not being called for him? It seems like, with how Cutler is playing and how physically dominant BMarsh usually is, we should be looking for him on third down inside the 10.

  2. AndrewMason says:

I think they’re focusing on him some more, but Cutler is also doing a great job progressing through his reads and finding other options — like on the touchdown to Stokley in the first quarter.

  3. Vinci says:

B-Marsh is gonna break out this half

  4. Vinci says:

    What did I tell you!?

  5. vegasbronco42 says:

It’s sure looking that way, based on what I’m reading. By the way, thanks very much for the answer Andrew. We realize that you are busy trying to keep the blog up to date while keeping notes for your story, so I know I speak for all of us when I say we appreciate you talking with us whenever you can.

  6. broncoinexile says:

    Now if the defense can just s l o w the thumbtacks down a little . . .

  7. broncoinexile says:

Vinci, I would be very pleased if his breakout included three more TDs. But I’m glad to see the impact he is making.

  8. Broncofan1088 says:

Hey Mason, could you please tell Marshall not to do any “inappropriate” driving tonight and to act classy about this very good game if it turns out to be a win please.
That aside, this game has been very fun to watch so far!

  9. Vinci says:

broncoinexile – not to mention the call I made in the 2nd quarter to keep out of the redzone and take shots from the 30 or 40. I sure hope Marshsall gets 3 more too!

  10. BoyTroy says:

    Lets barry them right here.

  11. vegasbronco42 says:

Hahahahhaha…..good stuff Vinci. What would that be called instead of a red zone offense?

  12. broncoinexile says:

I thought that was brilliant Vinci, it keeps the coaches from tanking the game. Now if we could get them to drop this “icing” the kicker stupidity. You go to the well too many times . . .

  13. Vinci says:

That would be called the green zone!

  14. BoyTroy says:

Can we ever put a team away. How bad has Ian Gold been tonight. That was just a huge play. Just like the whole year up and down and up and down.

  15. broncoinexile says:

so did glenn get some “incentive” money to keep the game interesting?

  16. chipsta74 says:

    There goes Martinez’ gameball

  17. vegasbronco42 says:

    TIM CROWDER!!!!

  18. broncoinexile says:

Thank you! Tim Crowder. But why the HELL did we just call timeout?!

  19. KoobLis says:

god damn it, the Defense stops them only to find out that they called timeout and now gives the titans chance to challenge

  20. vegasbronco42 says:

Sorry for my screaming. That’s what happens when I don’t have a tv, so I dont’ get to see the timeout……

  21. broncoinexile says:

which of bates’ assistants is leading the D tonight? Larry, Moe or Curly?

  22. KoobLis says:

Well, the broadcasters made a good point; our stupid timeouts just gave them 10 points.

  23. BoyTroy says:

The frustracing season continues. Finally get a stop then fumble. Get another stop and you call a timeout leading to another teams td. I love Mike, but at some time the coaching has to take some of the responsablities for making 1 bone head play after another. Catcha punt Martinez, hero to goat.

  24. Broncomania56 says:

Damn. should of just kept playing. These time-outs are costly. Everyone keep in mind, that the Titans are a 6-3 team. Vince Young, gives them that extra special something. Offense must answer. Cannot settle for anymore field goals. Martinez must have short term memory so that doesn’t happen again. Over-all Denver is doing pretty good. V. Young is the only difference for this team. Thank God his recievers can’t catch what hits them in the hands. GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! BRONCOS!!!!

  25. broncoinexile says:

Text book example of how to take an momentum building opportunity to put the game away and flush it down the toilet.

  26. brianbronco24 says:

Man…. just give them the ball so they can score the touchdown…. denver doesn’t seem to want to stop them…. they keep giving them second chances!

  27. brianbronco24 says:

Throw it cutler… YOU’RE NOT VINCE YOUNG!!!!!!!!

  28. Broncomania56 says:

OK so now there gonna lay down, I guess.

  29. broncoinexile says:

well, back to the bates’ sponsored track meet . . .

  30. broncoinexile says:

that’s TWO huge penalties on Adams in 10 minutes!

  31. Broncomania56 says:

Damit Sam Adams has been pushin it all game long. He finally got caught.

  32. Broncomania56 says:

    Man, John’s not 100 %.

  33. broncoinexile says:

If Lynch wants to the crowd to make some noise, he should offer to “lynch” the idiot coaching the defense . . .

  34. brianbronco24 says:

where’s this pass defense….. stop the damn zone defense….

  35. Broncomania56 says:

    maybe a holding call????

  36. brianbronco24 says:

first and ten….. pass…. first and ten…. pass

  37. BoyTroy says:

This is unbelievable. We have them dead. Then a to and now we are back to the 07 broncos. Are we aloud to hit young or is he wearing a red jersey like in practice.

  38. Broncomania56 says:

damn, defense needs to tighten it up. Come on Defense!!!!!!!!!

  39. poorboywilly says:

Well, gotta love that! However, our defense is still tired and that didn’t give them too much of a breather. Maybe they can get a three-and-out here and get some rest.
