Broncos-Titans: Second-Quarter Notes

November 19th, 2007 - 7:15pm by Andrew

7:15 P.M. MST: Second quarter … here we go.

7:16 P.M. MST: Nice tackle by Hamza Abdullah on Roydell Williams, who slammed the Tulane alumnus to the ground … third-and-2 now for the Titans … who continue their third-down success with a Vince Young-to-Justin Gage pass.

7:18 P.M. MST: Young finds Brandon Jones in front of Dre’ Bly … 21 yards, touchdown … Young pumped left, went right … the pump allowed Jones to find just enough space to break from Bly’s watch … 14-7, 1:45 into the second quarter.

7:20 P.M. MST: A disconcerting statistic — Tennessee is 5-of-7 on third downs. Titans have run 24 plays to the Broncos’ 6, and the Titans have controlled the ball for 14:02 to the Broncos’ 3:13. Denver’s offense needs to chew some clock on this series, because the defense could be getting a tad tired.

7:25 P.M. MST: Broncos use a timeout after gaining 20 on a pass from Jay Cutler to Brandon Stokley.

7:28 P.M. MST: Titans find a way to stop the Broncos’ passing game — commit a 38-yard pass-interference penalty. Broncos now at the Tennessee 11.

7:29 P.M. MST: Broncos settle for a 21-yard field-goal attempt after Selvin Young loses a yard on third-and-short … Broncos now lead 17-7 after Jason Elam knocks it home.

7:33 P.M. MST: Todd Sauerbrun’s kickoffs getting shorter as they go north to south, against the wind; this one didn’t make it to the end zone … Crowd getting loud now; forces Vince Young to take a timeout on first-and-10 from the Tennessee 10.

7:35 P.M. MST: Titans get out of purgatory quickly; Young finds Denver native Bo Scaife for 20.

7:36 P.M. MST: Broncos liberally using two defensive linemen who weren’t even with the team just 14 days ago — Josh Mallard and Kenny Peterson.

7:37 P.M. MST: Nate Webster loses his helmet … it’s just like training camp again.

7:38 P.M. MST: Young starting to get into hold-your-breath territory … just moving around, making plays by himself, keeping them alive … getting very dangerous. Crowd coming to life on third-and-3 … and Young finds Justin Gage for eight yards to keep the drive alive. Again, Young and the Titans are devouring the Broncos ‘D’ on third downs.

7:40 P.M. MST: LenDale White fumbles … Broncos recover … defense gets the big play it needs just as it was starting to wheeze a bit … Marcus Thomas with the square-up tackle to force it; Ian Gold recovers … Huge play, because the defense was getting gassed.

7:41 P.M. MST: Broncos now face third-and-5 after Cutler’s pass for Brandon Stokley overshoots the wideout; it’s Cutler’s first incompletion after connecting on his first six tosses.

7:42 P.M. MST: Nice call on the toss pitch to Young … get him the ball in space … picks up the yardage the Broncos need … the crowd has filled in quite nicely, by the way.

7:44 P.M. MST: Great creativity by the Broncos on the playcalling … Brandon Marshall on the end-around for 16 with the pump-fake to the right side … nicely done.

7:48 P.M. MST: Back from the two-minute warning … Jay Cutler’s pass for Glenn Martinez is low and incomplete.

7:49 P.M. MST: Broncos now up 20-7 after Elam hits a 39-yard field goal … It is the 384th of his career, passing Nick Lowery for fifth all-time.

7:50 P.M. MST: Titans have 1:45 to get downfield … they pick up 14 yards on the first play, a Young-to-Gage pass … Chris Brown takes a short pass and runs through the secondary, two members of which miss potential tackles … Titans at the Denver 48; 1:10 left; Titans with two timeouts.

7:54 P.M. MST: Young continuing to dissect the defense … Titans now at the Denver 38 … I’m quite stunned, frankly, that the officials aren’t reviewing the Young-to-Scaife play … it looked like Scaife might have had his left hand under the football … Broncos catch a break.

7:55 P.M. MST: After a failed third-down deep pass … Rob Bironas comes onto the field for a 56-yard kick with 14 seconds left … he missed the first kick, but the Broncos call timeout.

7:57 P.M. MST: And Bironas hits the rekick. “The ice melts,” says ESPN’s Mike Tirico. Broncos’ lead is now 20-10.

7:59 P.M. MST: A 9-yard Selvin Young run takes us to halftime.

    Who was the touchdown on?

  2. Vinci says:

    Great Bly once again

  3. poorboywilly says:

    Interesting…how windy is it Andrew?

  4. BoyTroy says:

Wow, 3rd down is killing us and wow has our pass d been bad. Bly has been so up and down and why is paymah playing so much. Our d better make some changes or we are going to make vince look like a pro bowler again.

  5. AndrewMason says:

I can’t tell; where I am the only wind is from the ventilation. Looks somewhat windy on the flags.

  6. poorboywilly says:

Paymah is playing more because Foxworth is playing a decent amount of safety, spelling Lynch and so Paymah is now the de facto nickleback.

  7. BoyTroy says:

he has been playing a bad nickel and on there #2 wr. not a good match up. make an adjustment.

  8. poorboywilly says:

Let’s see a fade to Marshall

  9. BoyTroy says:

How do you get to 4-5? Kick 21 yard field goals. You have to punch that in.

  10. poorboywilly says:

DTs are doing well, we need more pass rush though.

  11. BoyTroy says:

we are getting picked apart on d. Game plan has not been working. Please change something up. How does this guy look so bad the past few weeks and now look like the old vince. Make a play.

  12. broncoinexile says:

so is bates’ new defensive scheme to tire the opposing offense by letting them run up and down the field unopposed?

  13. poorboywilly says:

UGH…….it’s Den vs. GB version 2.0!!!! Vince Young is this week’s Favre. The Broncos? Oh, those are the guys playing Vince Young.

  14. broncoinexile says:

let me guess, the “REAL” defense is in the stands wearing orange?

  15. Vinci says:

We needed that Thomas and Gold. That could turn the momentum back our way

  16. elway1973 says:

nice..TURNOVER..hope we can put up 7 points this time

  17. elway1973 says:

    here we go…redzone

  18. ocrush4ever says:

Is it my imagination, or has B-Marsh NOT caught a pass since he got nailed in the jewels last week?

  19. elviselway says:

    Brandon Marshall!!!!

sweet block, knocking that DL on his ass, and then that great reverse with the pump fake

  20. poorboywilly says:

BUT, he is making his appearances. He just knocked a DE off his feet!! And that pump fake was just genius…. froze both those guys.

  21. broncoinexile says:

Andrew, will you please explain to the coaches it’s “REDZONE” not “DEADZONE”?

How many times do we come away with 3 points or less inside the 20 before someone decides to get serious about winning?

  22. BoyTroy says:

Again, why are we 4-5? Field goals and cannot stop a team on 4th down. This is a huge drvie. No points please.

  23. Vinci says:

I think the Broncos should stay out of the red zone and just take shots from about the 30 or 40, that way we get touchdowns everytime!

  24. BoyTroy says:

seriously how bad is this d tonight. So much for a big drive.

  25. broncoinexile says:

    bates is a GENIUS!

How else do you describe a guy this incompetent who can get paid the ridiculous amount of money he gets and not get his sorry ass FIRED?!

  26. SuperBowlBoundBroncos says:

So much for icing the kicker. Mike tried to do too much.

  27. broncoinexile says:

EVEN BETTER PLAY CALLING! WAY TO PUT THREE POINTS ON THE BOARD FOR THE WRONG TEAM!!!

Apparently the only “orangeout” is whatever is preventing the coaching staff from buying (and using) a brain that works!

Do they even want to win this game?

  28. chipsta74 says:

There seems to be 2 things working ok for us – the short 8 yarers to the TE’s and the long bombs to Stokley. We gotta get the gaps for the running game working better.

  29. vegasbronco42 says:

I am not where I can watch this on tv, so I need everybody’s help. Is the Titans’ D taking Marshall out of the game, or are the plays (other than the reverse) just not being called for him? It seems like, with how Cutler is playing and how physically dominant BMarsh usually is, we should be looking for him on third down inside the 10.

  30. broncofan7776 says:

Jeff Fisher said it would stop when it backfired on a coach. So I guess we will see huh.

  31. broncofan7776 says:

    you dont have ESPN

  32. vegasbronco42 says:

You could just see that coming after he missed it the first time, couldn’t you? Now we are going to have to listen to all the talk shows beat this field goal thing to death for another 3 months.
