9:54 P.M. CST: Broncos defense fighting to keep them alive in this goal-to-go situation … Texans now have third-and-goal at the 1-yard-line.

9:55 P.M. CST: Touchdown, Vonta Leach … 3:20 to go, and the Texans lead by three scores, at 31-13.

9:58 P.M. CST: Going to work on the recap now … will be in the blog infrequently, if at all, during these final moments … feel free to discuss the game here, however. Until next time, vaya con Dios.

    vegasbronco,

The reason we keep getting called for 12 men of the field is because that’s how bates draws the plays.

His “scheme” requires 12 men on the line of scrimmage to be effective.

His biggest problem so far has been hiding the 8 guys he needs in the secondary to back up the 12 on the line.

If anybody can put a positive spin on this for me, please do so. I was thinking that working 16 hours today sucked, but since it kept me from watching this debacle, I’ll consider it a fair trade.

  2. broncoinexile says:

All year long, our defense has been the tonic to help other offenses feel good about themselves.

I shudder to think of all the nobodies that had career days against us this year.

And somebody see if Kubiak wants to move back to Denver.

  3. broncoinexile says:

    mikew,

Great press conference. My guess is that the actual conference will consist of 90% or more of those answers. Are you psychic?

  4. broncosfrance says:

we don’t deserve the playoffs , that’s plain an simple , we can’t beat anyone else than KC !!6-10 or 7-10 , a losing season ! No pass rush in this game , no protection , we have a gem in Cuttler but he needs a supporting cast in both lines , both lines are no match for every average team , this game showed that fact , Houston is an average team and they outplayed us in the trenches .Now it’s time to turn to 08 , it’s sad but it’s reality , don’t waste another year like this one please , every team have rebuilding season but , 07 was that rebuilding season .2 games remaining and nothing exept pride to play for !!!The offseason is begining in mid december …….sad and unusual in Denver .Rest Walker , it’s enough , we need a healthy corps of receiver next year and i’m afraid 6 months won’t be enough for him , try everything you want in the OL and DL , we have nothing to lose .Sad day , just 4 days after this brilliant game , i was afraid of this and that happened , just 4 days of pleasure , it’s short !!

This is in response to the post about our Defense last year w/ Coyer. First of all, we had the best defense in the NFL for 1/2 the season ( or there abouts). Some might say the Bears defense was better, because they actually scored points, but our didn’t allow points. Anyways, the reason it fell apart 1/2 way through the year, is that I don’t care how good of a player you are, or how tough you are, if your defense is out on the field 50 min of a 60 min football game, you get injured, tired, and just plain beat, Yes I’m saying our offense SUCKED.

So this year our offense is in a good gear, at least can be on the field for 1/2 the game or more. and what do we do, reorg the defense… DUMB. Should of NEVER gotten rid of Coyer or Wilson.

And that my fellow broncomaniacs is the biggest shame of the year.

  6. DeadDrunk says:

Ohh I was the fan sitting behind the South end zone wanting to cry…

  7. broncosfrance says:

07elway : your post is the only bright spot in this darkness , yes i have faith too ,we’ll be back to contention , next year and if not , the next , there’s still hope in broncos nation !!

  8. DeadDrunk says:

    One last bit of information…

Larry Coyer as DC of Tampa Bay
    Team stats
    2nd in points allowed
    3rd in total yards allowed
    4th is passing yards allowed
    15th in rushing yards allowed

    Yea, good move there Broncos…

  9. broncosfrance says:

i don’t totally agree whith you deaddrunk , last year our D was bend but don’t break , but in the end you break . Great defenses ( 2000 Ravens ) doesn’t allow any yardages , put grat pressure on the QB game long and force 3 and out , last year we weren’t able to do that at any timeof the year . If we were so good at the begening it’s beacause we didn’t face good teams whith good offenses (exept NE ) .Otherwise our D was’t so bad and there was no need to fire Coyer , the main problem was the offense who couldn’t stay on the field .For Wilson , his lost was a big hit but , from what i ‘ve been told , his injurie was really seroius , career ending one .

20BroncoFan4life….. Im confused. How many playoff games has Shanny won since Elway? ONE. If our goal is to just be good only in the regular season than hire Marty. He will at least turn us into the best regular season team in the league. Thats a fact. Shanny had another chance. It was this season and what happened? Oh well, maybe we give him another one next year and finish 4-12 because thats where we should really be this year.

  11. vegasbronco42 says:

Great stuff, broncoinexile. I wish you were joking, but the whole “Bates scheme requires 12 men on the field” actually makes a lot of sense….

  12. chemaster says:

Denverrules – good observation on Sauerbrun. For weeks, his kickoffs are +-60 yds. I was wondering, if he has lost some leg strength or if he was told to kick shorter in order to make coverage easier for our great special teams.

  13. hrdnokd says:

I would like to wish Shanahan the best of luck in Michigan. It was great while it lasted.

  14. hi-mtnman says:

WOW!, Talk about a lot of comments, Everyone seems to agree that we were overated for this game. Lots of things to consider on this one.
    1. Kubiak, knows our game plan inside and out
    2. We overrated ourselves on the KC game, they (KC) were really banged up with injuries and we made that look easy.
    3. On the physchological level, Shannys son, maybe a lillte of, hope my son wins?
4th and final note, we’re done for the season so, SAVE CUTLER, for next year, don’t let him be on IR for the start of next season!

I HOPE FOR NEXT YEAR, some of us don’t have many of them left!

  15. hi-mtnman says:

Excellant Draft Pick for next year, he’s a 6’5″ , 240 lb WR out of Nebraska has the most yardage for receptions at Ne and runs through a secondary like a bull through wall street. Shanahan, Pick Up Murice Purifoy!

  16. maceano says:

Our D is pathetic first off. Second off Shanny just quit on us. I am sick of seeing him quit all the time. He is quikly turning into Patrino. I dont understand the 4th downs we went for. If we took a field goal on the 4th and 10 we woulda been in better shape. Plus it didnt even seem like we had any good schemes for fourth down. Its obvious we need Stokely, Javon just doesnt cut it anymore. Lastly Bates is the worst assistant coach that has ever been allowed to coach anywhere. He has no idea what the hell to do. He doesnt know how to blitz, he just relies on Elvis to get to the QB. This guy sucks and has no idea how to deal with adversity. We need to restructure oue whole D around DJ Williams. Everybody else I could care less about. Champ is not the same, neither is Lynch, and our outside linebackers are backups on everother team in the league.

  17. maceano says:

Yeah and that also got me heated when I didnt see shanny give any carries to Andre Hall. Everytime this guy has touched the ball it has been explosive. I am tired of seeing Selvin Young carry the load. One of the biggest reasons he wasnt drafted is because he was always hurt at Texas. Andre Hall played through an ankle injury last game and looked great. He has got great vision. Henry you suck man and you owe Shanny an apology. He stuck his neck out for you and got fined 25 grand cause of you and you are just terrible. Lets give Hall another shot. Atleast replace him on special teams with Martinez.

  18. LetPlummerPlay says:

don’t worry guys, we’re gonna buck up and turn this thing around. Seriously. Shanahan is a genius and Cutler is God-like. They will turn this thing around no FRIGGIN doubt boys.

I predict Denver VS. Dallas for the superbowl, seriously, for sure, no i mean it, i’m NOT KIDDING.

  19. vegasbronco42 says:

Agreed on Hall. We weren’t getting much going in the run game, so why not put Hall in for a few carries? I thought he was injured or something, but then I saw him make a special teams play, so he was definitely active last night. More baffling calls. I personally think one running back should get the bulk of the carries, to allow him to get in a rhythm. If you are going to rotate every other play or every series, there was no reason not to give Hall a crack at it too.

  20. shelbo bronco says:

well like ive said before we win one game and think we are in the superbowl. defense stunk i dont think its the players as much as it is the scheme, if thats what you call it. ofense lokked pretty pathetic too not sure who to blame there probably both. cutler is lucky that #47 from houston cant catch…oh well hope we finish strong. go nuggets!

  21. wormyblackburny says:

    LPP,
Dude, we already turned things around last year. We turned them 180 degrees around!!! We went from a playoff team to a non playoff team. How much bigger of a turnaround can a team have. Great job Shanny!!!

  22. broncoinexile says:

vegasbronco, you and me both. I wish I was joking, but from what I have seen — sad and disturbing as it has been — for bates “scheme” to work he needs 12 guys on the line of scrimmage and another 8 in the secondary. Plus five or six guys to play safety . . .

He has taken some very talented football players and turned them into punchlines for bad jokes.

The saddest thing about that is:

    1) he still has his job;

    2) he gets paid 10 times what I do even though he is blatantly incompetent and, if he worked for my firm, his ass would have been on the street months ago;

    3) public embarrassment on national tv ( on multiple occasions) is insufficient to make him submit his resignation;

    4) shannyhan feels some weird need to pretend he has a done a good job and;

    5) every team around the league looks forward to the opportunity to play us in order to improve their stats.

Not only is this guy clueless, he has the audacity to pretend that nothing is wrong even those his defenses routinely give up record yardage and look like incompetent morons on the field; when they are not getting flagged for having too many men on the field.

Even in the way old days when Denver was only a so-so team in the AFC West, I don’t recall being the laughing stock of the NFL. Even Wade Phillips did not make us look this stupid.

Admittedly, Kubiak is a great coach, but his team is only mediocre and he bitch-slapped shanny — on national tv — like the broncos were a challenged high school team.

I’m embarrassed, and I’m just a fan. If I worked for the organization and this was the best I could do, I would hide my head and apologize every single time I talked with anyone outside the organization.

By the way, as I suggested, we need to win to shut that retard lpp up. Even more disturbing than this embarrassing blow-out on national tv is having to read his insipid comments, as he prays at the altar of his god, retired, mediocre QB, Jake Plummer, who never quite took it to the next level.

and, just in case broncohyde shows up, I don’t consider this “doom and gloom”. I consider it an objective assessment of a pathetic team that should pray it does not somehow back into the play-offs. This team has some great talent, but has been mis-managed so badly this entire year, that a fluke appearance in the play-offs (and it would be a fluke) will be met by an embarrassing blow-out and another footnote in a sports almanac (most yards/points/first downs/passes completed, etc. in a playoff game).

I’m a Bronco fan day in and day out, but I am embarrassed by the effort(s) the team has put out this year, the coaching and the failure to honor Darrent Williams. This team has slept walk through the entire season and never completely played like they truly wanted to win it all. I lay the blame for that at the very top and shanny has a lot of explaining to do. Not to mention the repairs he needs to do in the off season.

As I said, anyone who can put a positive spin on this, let me know.

  23. gasperdn says:

    Hey bmarsh111,

You don’t sound like much of a Broncos fan to me. I can a agree that Bly is playing like crap, but Abdullah is playing almost better then Lynch, Bly, and Bailey combined.

  24. gasperdn says:

    broncoinexile,

A positive spin is at least we are not the Miami Dolphins!!!!! And at least we don’t have to worry about Simeon Rice any more!!!

  25. broncoinexile says:

    Thanks, gasperdn. And sam adams.

Although the fish will get a decent draft pick, what do we get?

  26. sicknessfl says:

We certainly have our issues, and I can’t say that I’m a fan of Mike Shannahan as a personnel guy. But who ever said that Champ Bailey is over rate and needs to go is a complete idiot and I have to believe you know nothing about football whatsoever.

  27. West Coast says:

broncoinexile..Great Blog. I only hope that Mr. Bowlen reads it and takes it to heart. As far as LPP is concerned you were wrong when you called him a guy. LPP is actually a female. That should explain everything. Please Mr. Bowlen can there butts, bring in a new coach to start our new young era off right.

  28. DnvrBrncs100885 says:

I gotta say, having Plummer around right now would be helpful to our situation.

    1) It would help Cutler to grow as a quarterback.

    2) Notice how our O-line can only hold off an opposing D-line for about 5 seconds? Plummer worked well with this because he could scramble so well.

All I’m saying is it’d be nice to have him around if things got ugly like they did the other night. Not to say I’m not impressed with Cutler this year… I just don’t like the fact that our backup is freaking Patrick Ramsey.

  29. DnvrBrncs100885 says:

BTW. I really don’t understand what all the beef with Plummer is with you all. The guy played his heart out for our team AND took us to the playoffs every season he played for us (with the exception of the one Cutler took over). I just don’t get why he’s blasted so much on here… never understood it.

  30. vegasbronco42 says:

Hey 100885, not everyone on here blasts the guy. There are a few who remember his time here fondly. I’m happy to see another fan on here who appreciates guys who gave their hearts to this team. What I don’t get is why everyone is so hard on LPP. LPP usually makes pretty good points. Sure he may go a little overboard at times, but so do the rest of us. With each of us, it stems from being passionate about this team, and that’s a good thing in my eyes……

  31. West Coast says:

To both of you guys to the north of me. We are not blasting Plummer. We are only saying that Cutler is a major improvement. His stats and total points are much better already than Plummer at any stage of the game. Let me remind you that he is just starting put. Plummer was like Marty…could not win in the playoffs and that is why he has the name Jake the Mistake. Our offense is much better this year than last year the problem is that we are giving up more points than we have in the last 10 years. As far as LPP stands……HER comments are truly warrented coming from a girl.

  32. vegasbronco42 says:

I didn’t say anyone was blasting Plummer on this particular post, but you know as well as I do that it’s been a regular happening around here. I agree with you, that Cutler is better statistically at the same stage in his career, and I have very high hopes for his future. I just hope every fan of this team does not turn on him like they did on Plummer, Griese, and even Elway back in the late 80s/early 90s.

I don’t think it’s worth getting into this debate again, and I apologize in advance, but as fas as comparing Jake to Marty as someone who “could not win in the playoffs”, who was our QB when we beat the mighty Pats to advance to the AFC Championship? And before that, who is the only Arizona Cardinals QB to win a playoff game in the last 30 + years ? With basically an entire team on his shoulders, in the Cowboys’ stadium? Yes, Jake was able to win in the playoffs, no matter how many times anyone tries to dress it up otherwise…

  33. vegasbronco42 says:

Oh, and even if LPP is a girl, who cares? There are plenty of knowledgeable female fans on here.
