Two days after placing Ebenezer Ekuban on the injured-reserve list and trading Gerard Warren to the Oakland Raiders, the Broncos signed former Chiefs defensive lineman John Browning.
Browning — who was primarily a tackle but also filled in at end from time to time during his 11 seasons with the Chiefs — has been out of football since reaching an injury settlement with Kansas City last fall on Sept. 30. The Chiefs placed him on injured reserve with a back injury 28 days earlier.
The 12-year veteran started 12 games and played in all 16 as recently as the 2005 campaign, finishing that year with 35 tackles (31 solo), two sacks (14 yds.), four passes defensed and one forced fumble. He had been fairly durable prior to that, and was a starter on the Chiefs team that went 13-3 back in 2003. The question is — what will he have after missing the last year, and how does he feel? We’ll start learning the answer to that question this afternoon.
Browning will wear jersey No. 98 — which, coincidentally, last belonged to fellow ex-Chief defensive lineman Carlos Hall before he left the team just before the start of training camp.
What do you think of the signing? Will he help the Broncos’ front line? Sound off below (or, if you’re on the main blog page, click “Comments” and fire away) … and until next entry, vaya con Dios.

We’ll see how that one year off was worth it. He also didn’t have a line like the Broncos have now!
What the hell are you all pissed off about? Jay Cutler plays like a damn girl anyways, he is the one who does not have a clue. Defensively the Broncos will suck, besides Lynch, Bly, and Bailey. The second team defensive is better than the first team also. It is going to be a long year.
All these messages and everybody with a different opinion which is good. Thats way we have freedom of speech. I say give the guy a chance before you tackle him down. I believe strongly in Mike Shanhan. If he thinks this will help the team AMEN. If not then he made a mistake anybody out there that hasnt made a mistake speak up. Its impossible to not make a mistake because we are human. Because the guy was on the injury list everybody thinks he done. That is not necessarily true I believe we know our bodies better than all the critics in the world he must think and Mike must think hes good for us. I dont believe in booing or cutting down your team if you are a true fan. I love the broncos win or lose.
expensive and old DL men are not a solution ( ask raiders fans about Sapp and the way he’s improved their defense the last two years !!! ) so Rice and Trotter are’t going to generate anything expect loss of money . This new guy , I don’t know very much about him but i Trust the staff and i firmly believe that : the future of our Dl is the rooks we drafted this year and perhaps they won’t have and impact this year so we have to be patient but i don’t think either way Jay is still ready to lead our team to where we want to go : SB . So tet’s be patient .
Forget Tank! It’s only pre-season people. Relax and let’s see what happens against the Bills.
Hey I know he is aging, coming of the injury list, and didn’t put up great numbers in his last full season, but lets at least give this guy a chance to prove himself first. I mean, I hate thinking about what happened with Plummer. The broncos seem to me to have a reputation for running people out of town. The offseason moves the broncos have been making the past few years have me really frustrated with this team. Shanahan’s results as the coach are inarguable-back to back super bowls, 1000-yard rushers for what 6-7 consecutive seasons, many with a different starter each year, almost produced 2 1000 yard backs in one season, among the top 3 winningist active coaches, etc etc. But lately I think the success of the past is going to his head and the heads of the front office. He seems almost too arrogant. Granted with his track record he has every reason to be arrogant, but I say it is going to his head. Can you honestly say drafting Cutler didn’t negatively impact Plummer’s confidence, both in himself and his ability to lead the team? He tried hard not to show it but it was evident. Now we put our entire team in the hands of a someone who really is still an unproven rookie? So if we have a losing season this year, are we going to run Cutler out of town like we did Plummer? What will my fellow broncos fans say if Cutler flops when all this time they have been saying he is a superstar when he hasn’t really proven that he is? Don’t get me wrong broncos fans are some of the best out there, plain and simple, but it seems we sometimes forget now matter how superhuman and immortal these guys may seem, they are still just human and they do make mistakes.
sign simeon and tank
I wish we could have kept Coyer , i’m not sure about Bates scheme . It hasn’t stopped anything yet, and how will we know playing the browns if its getting better or not. Bailey, Bly, Lynch its not gonna matter when we have an interstate up the middle of our D-line. The Warren trade right now looks like a big mistake ( is Bates some kinda double secret agent of one of our AFC West foes. Yes I know its the preseason but whoo-we are we fooling the leaugr or we fooling our selves
you guys stink John Browning is a very good player anbd could be a very good back up and a first line for a few games . Besides he is a very nice man . Besides he can keep his mouth shut and act like a gentelman.
