Broncos-Ravens: Third-Quarter Notes

October 9th, 2006 - 8:35pm by Andrew

8:14 p.m. MDT: Jake Plummer nearly matched the team’s first-half passing total on the first play of the second half with an 11-yard pass to Rod Smith. Denver accounted for 16 passing yards before intermission.

8:17 p.m. MDT: Paul Ernster coaxes a fair catch from B.J. Sams with a high, 37-yard punt, forcing Baltimore to take over at its 16. Ernster’s net punting average tonight is 38.5 yards.

8:21 p.m. MDT: Another big Al Wilson tackle allows the Broncos to start the second half out better on third downs. Denver allowed Baltimore to convert five of its 10 third-dowwn attempts in the first half, but Wilson’s third-down tackle forces a punt.

8:27 p.m. MDT: Two fake end-arounds gave Jake Plummer a chance to look deep for Rod Smith. The pass, while on target, forced Smith to stop before making the grab; Chris McAlister closed and the play ended incomplete. Two plays later, the Broncos went three-and-out.

8:28 p.m. MDT: Paul Ernster continues to make his case for the punting job, drilling a 50-yard punt that sails towards the sidelines and out of bounds at the 12.

8:31 p.m. MDT: Al Wilson got the initial pressure; Michael Myers got the 2-yard sack, but unfortunately for the Broncos, Ravens center Mike Flynn recovered the ensuing fumble at the Baltimore 12-yard-line. Denver now has two sacks tonight.

8:33 p.m. MDT: Each of the last two punt returns have witnessed Broncos penalties — one on Domonique Foxworth, and the latest one on Curome Cox. As a result, Denver will start its third possession of this quarter back at its 24-yard-line.

8:40 p.m. MDT: This might be Javon Walker’s drive. Two third-and-2 plays have seen two completions to Javon Walker for 8 and 11 yards, respectively. (As someone who has Walker on one of his fantasy teams, third-down receptions and yardage should count double.)

8:42 p.m. MDT: Three plays later, the drive ends. A sack, a rush for a loss of one yard and a short incompletion in Walker’s direction lead to Ernster’s third second-half punt, which is fair-caught at the 13-yard-line.

8:49 p.m. MDT: Baltimore gets a first down on a third-down pass from McNair to Daniel Wilcox. Baltimore advances to the 30-yard-line as the quarter concludes with the game still a stalemate.
