Broncos-Packers: Fourth-Quarter and Overtime Notes

October 29th, 2007 - 8:53pm by Andrew

8:52 P.M. MDT: The 77,160 tickets distributed tonight are a Broncos record. The in-house attendance was 76,645.

8:52 P.M. MDT: Packers nearing midfield; they now sit at their 49 … Second-and-6 … Crowd trying to get noisy again … A slew of flags fly as the Packers take a delay-of-game penalty.

8:54 P.M. MDT: Swing pass picks up eight … third-and-3 at the Denver 48 … empty backfield … Favre loses the football out of his hand … He recovers it, but the Pack will have to punt as they face fourth-and-9 from their 46.

8:55 P.M. MDT: Touchback on the punt; Broncos at their 20 to begin this drive with 12:37 left.

8:58 P.M. MDT: Vince Vaughn in the house. “What a great stadium this is,” he said. I should have worn my Speaker City T-shirt.

8:59 P.M. MDT: First Brandon Stokley plays pass defense to prevent an interception, then he slides for a 16-yard reception to move the Broncos to their 48.

9:00 P.M. MDT: Penalties shredding the Broncos tonight … this one, a holding penalty on Brandon Marshall, scuttles a potential game-breaking run by Selvin Young … not sure about the call, but it stands. Andre Hall runs three yards for a first down on the next play (the downfield holding put the Broncos in first-and-2) and Denver now sits at the Green Bay 42.

9:02 P.M. MDT: Well, that was the wackiest three-yard loss I’ve ever seen … if NFL Films still made the “Football Follies,” that Brandon Marshall aborted-throw-run-cutback-fadeback-run would have earned an instant place. Tremendous effort by Marshall to salvage a two-yard loss out of a play that could have set the Broncos back 10 or even 12 yards.

9:05 P.M. MDT: Matt Lepsis called for a false start.

9:07 P.M. MDT: Broncos punting on fourth-and-6 … Teams have combined for 21 penalties tonight … Todd Sauerbrun places it perfectly; it bounces at the 5 and is downed at the 3 by Curome Cox. 8:15 remains in the game.

9:10 P.M. MDT: And just like that, the Packers are out of the goalpost’s shadow; an 18-yard pass to Greg Jennings moves the Pack to its 21.

9:12 P.M. MDT: Third-and-9 for the Packers coming up here at the Green Bay 22 … Biggest defensive play of the game? We’ll see … Favre in the shotgun … and he finds Donald Driver for 17 yards … Favre has this habit of being like Mola Ram, the antagonist in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom — he rips your heart out of your chest and then holds it up and shows it to you before you die.

9:17 P.M. MDT: Denver’s defense finally gets the stop, but with a field goal required, it’ll be a tall order; Glenn Martinez fielded the Jon Ryan punt at the Denver 7-yard-line. The Broncos have two timeouts and 2:27 with which to work.

9:19 P.M. MDT: First-and-10 … Cutler lobs one for Scheffler … incomplete, but Atari Bigby takes the pass-interference penalty. That’s 17 yards. 2:21 left.

9:20 P.M. MDT: Selvin Young goes nowhere. Second-and-10 coming up after the two-minute warning.

9:22 P.M. MDT: Cutler short for Martinez … incomplete. Third-and-10 looms.

9:23 P.M. MDT: Fourth-and-2 now arrives after an 8-yard-pass to Brandon Stokley. Denver calls timeout with 1:37 left.

9:25 P.M. MDT: Here’s the ballgame … Cutler and the Broncos break the huddle … he is in the shotgun … Stokley in motion … high snap … he gets it … finds Stokley near the left sideline for the first down and seven yards, and he gets out of bounds. Broncos can reset at their 39 with 1:32 left.

9:26 P.M. MDT: Shotgun … Cutler witth the pocket collapsing … overthrows Stokley, who wants interference but won’t get it.

9:27 P.M. MDT: Cutler finds Brandon Marshall … and like the Seattle game last year, he bounces off defenders and goes for a ride up the rigth sideline … defensive holding on Charles Woodson is irrelevant, and the Broncos are in field-goal range with 1:16 left.

9:28 P.M. MDT: Cutler and the Broncos at the Packers 26 … shotgun … he gets it to Marshall again, who dances his way down to the Green Bay 14.

9:28 P.M. MDT: Clock ticking … down to 44 seconds … Cutler marshals the team … under center … snap at 37 seconds … hand it to Selvin Young who dances through Green Bay’s defense for an absolutely improbable 9-yard run, turning a 3-yard loss into a gain that now has the Broncos at the Green Bay 5. Twenty-five seconds left. Denver takes its final timeout.

9:30 P.M. MDT: Too much going on to adequately process right now … but the Marshall catch-and-run and Young’s little run … well … let me just say this: WOW.

9:31 P.M. MDT: Cutler looks for Marshall in the left corner, incomplete. It’s the kind of pass you have to call, because while you want a touchdown, you can’t risk a turnover here.

9:32 P.M. MDT: Oh boy … rushing the field goal team on the field after a run … tied … Elam drills the kick. Overtime in Denver. Can’t take many more of these games.

9:33 P.M. MDT: Coin toss … Packers call heads … and they win it.

9:35 P.M. MDT: A low line-drive kickoff … very returnable, but Andre Hall blows the return up at the Packers 18. Crowd going bananas.

9:36 P.M. MDT: Favre to Jennings past Dre’ Bly up the left sideline … 82 yards, ballgame.

For all the Broncos wins, Shanny lets Cutler take them all the way down the field, only to give it to Elam. Well Shanny went to the well one too many times tonight. NOTE TO SHANAHAN… THIS ISN’T THE NFL IN 1997. You play to win now, not tie.. ESPECIALLY AGAINST BRETT FAVRE in overtime!!! Just once… ONCE can you blow a team out. I haven’t seen Denver blow a team out since probably 2003. Shanahan needs to get with the times and let Cutler be the QB we all know he can. If you’re comparing to ELWAY, then let him PLAY LIKE ELWAY. When did Elway settle for FG’s???

  2. chevyman2000 says:

blue diamond great point last year I read an article about how shanny had to scale back the offense for plummer. That is one of the reasons why he made the change last year. So this year we go to a two page if that playbook so plain a pop warner player could do. Shanny either take the leash off Cutler or step aside and let somene that knows what theyare doing take Cutler. In fact shanny after your stupid QB dive there at the end go coach somewhere else please!!!

  3. dekreybroncofan says:

    Wow,
So does anyone else feel violated? I am really disappointed in Mike not trusting his recievers and making his QB run. I mean if he would have put it in the hands of both his QB and his Recievers we can throw it out of the end zone and have the same situation at worst. Maybe with a pass we can get the TD but it was the best case… Now we have to be mean to DET., and I am sure that can be done.

  4. Maceano says:

BAD CALLS? How do you call holding on a shove? Also Martinez caught that ball. Plus why didnt we get a time out for a measurement after that stupid QB Draw in the final seconds of the game? Cmon you start seeing bias refs, and you know why its because Brett Favre is held on this imaginary pedestal!!!

  5. ElwayRed98 says:

Cutler is AMAZING. Almost his 4th comeback win in 12 starts.. Amazing. However… FIRE SHANNY! That was the worst play calling ever. Play for overtime when it’s 1st and goal from the 3??? I agree with chevyman2000. Go coach somewhere else so Cutler can take over the team. Oh, take Bates and Bly with you.

  6. ten_fiver says:

All you Bly haters, don’t forget when Bailey got burnt on the exact same route. Our corners have to play clean up for all the missed plays by the linebackers, that’s why they are prone to the big plays. I feel bad for Cutler though. That kid shows heart, poise, and talent to keep the Broncs in the game. Then the D just turns around and doesn’t show up. If only the front 7 wanted to win half as much as Cutler and the other young guys on offense do. Oh well, at least we’re getting closer to a better draft pick, maybe we can get a real linebacker?

  7. ElwayRed98 says:

That was the first time I’ve seen Bailey get beat… after he came back from a strained quad! That’s the 45683453485th time I’ve seen Bly get smoked. Go watch his Detroit days. Most overated corner.

  8. ElwayRed98 says:

I feel so bad for Cutler… The guy has no offensive weapons and still keeps his team in games. He won last week and then Shanny puts the lease on him this week. Makes no sense.

  9. johnymt2001 says:

Guys, Guys, Guys… Let’s face facts here. We have a team Decimated by injury. HALF of all of our starters are injured right now. Both sides of the ball are missing leaders. A QB who is still trying to find his footing, a coaching staff dealing with change and challenge. We show an awful lot of heart for a bunch of third strings and walk-ons. This team is still young, with a few exceptions. We need to focus on fundamentals and keep our eye on the prize. Denver Broncos Football is all about possibilities. Always has been. Keep the faith , baby. Denver is STILL a force to be reckoned with….

  10. johnymt2001 says:

Also, as far as the defense goes, I have to disagree with westcoast. Look at what they accomplished against Green Bay in the Red Zone. We stopped them or held them ot a feild goal the last four possessions. The last play was a Hail Mary that worked. It could have just as easily been picked and run back. Too bad it was a future HOF QB who threw it. Give the boys their due. They played with heart.

  11. chevyman2000 says:

    yeah ten fiver
too bad that high draft pick dont get us coach that knows what he is doing. I have wonder for awhile now for about last 5 or 6 seasons how much Johm Elway was his own offense cordinator. We haven’t really haven’t been able to do much since he reitred. One playoff win in four appearances. We have had good teams along the way. Makes me wonder how times the play was called or changed by him in the huddle. John might be the only one that knows beside the coaches. Wait a minute they dont know what they are doing second and goal 29 secs left and call a QB dive. Bonehead. Maybe John can be our next coach? wishful thinking??

  12. BRETT BRONCO says:

WE NEED CHANGES, WE HAVENOT DEF., 2008 IS OVER FOR DENVER BRONCOS. PLEASE CUT SHANAHAN , CUT BATES, TRADE A NEW HEAD COACH .

  13. plummerdude says:

I can’t believe everyone was so happy about bly, he is horrible. He only stood out because he was on the lions, and i can’t stand foxworth, he is too small. The Def. Cord. should be fired on the spot, he is a joke………

  14. johnymt2001 says:

OK westy, if you wanna talk football, I’m yer guy. First off, take a look at the roster, both defense and offense. See any names you recognize?? No??Now look at the injured list. Looks pretty familiar , Eh? get a grip. Mike Shanahan is one of the most sought after coaches in the NFL. If he were to leave Denver, he would come back twice a year to hand our ass to us with some other team. We would wind up with Marty Morninweg or some other dildo. You want better coaching? Name someone. Oh yeah, someone who doesn’t already have a job. And don’t bore me with names of college coaches, we all know how that works out. Now, if you weren’t just a bandwagon fan who knows nothing about Bronco history, let alone NFL history, you’d know that Denver has never, and WILL never, suck as bad or as long as your real favorite team, the Raitards. Denver is still a force because we can still beat any given team on any given Sunday. Favre threw a nice pass, but we PLAYED THE GAME> contrast that with your beloved Raiders.

  15. plummerdude says:

shanny isn’t the problem, nor is cutler, i think its the beat up offensive line that hurts us the most. but i do agree with west-coast on one thing, why the hell was moss deactivated for simean rice,,,come on!!

  16. chevyman2000 says:

IF shanny is one of the top sought after coaches I will pack his bags for him. John2001 tell me what shanny has done since his HOF QB retired. mmmmm.
still waiting……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..still waiting……………………………… here tired of waiting for you let me answer we have got embrassed in every playoff game except for the new england game since superbowl 33. Suffered our most embrassing loss at HOME in 40 years. We cant win at home anymore. If we were a college team every school would be nipping at our heals to play us at Denver that way the could get a an away win that way they could pad their wins for the BCS. You know as well as I do if any other coach in the league went eight seasons with one playoff win they would be fired in about three seasons. Look at Marty last year the best record in the league zero playoff wins gone. So it is about a time we start seeing the light and see that shanny has not updated at all. He as the same offensive scheme that he has ran for years and everyone knows what is coming. The packers probably could have looked at the film from superbowl 32 and know how to defend us tonight.

  17. jdswathers says:

One good thing that came out of this game Cutler did not through a pick his first game without one at least he is showing improvement.

  18. step on me says:

Shanahan is not the problem. He is a very good coach. Cutler is a great QB. He is still learning. People forget, half of the offense is injured so they are not playing. We have a lot of new players on offense and defense. Not to mention, the Broncos are still playing with very heavy hearts for Nash and Williams.

Bates and the defense still is not clciking. However, every week the team improves. After all, Jay played his first game with out throwing an interception.

They played a good game tonight. The only reason they lost is because the Packers won the coin toss and nobody has a stronger arm than Farve. We all know if the Broncos won the coin toss, they would have won the game.

They will snap back and win next week in Detroit.

Broncos hang your heads high. You played a great game and you will bounce back from this loss. Just watch film from this game to see what needs to be worked on.

Even though the Broncos did not win tonight, I will still wear my orange and blue tomorrow with pride.

    Go Broncos!!!

  19. step on me says:

All of you fake Broncos fans, get over yourself and act like a true fan. A true fan supports the team regardless. As far as Shanahan, he is NOT the problem. All of you fake fans need to keep your opinions to your self. NOBODY cares what stupid comments you will make.

  20. chevyman2000 says:

    step on me
The only reason you think the commnets are stupid is that you know that they are true and the truth hurts. Santa please send us a coach with a brain. Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. StormST says:

I can’t agree with anyone who says that the defense is emproving week-by-week. Why? Steelers game anyone? Pass rush, sack, turnovers, TD. Now? No sacks, no pressure on Favre, no turnovers, CB-s and safety-s beat all the time. And come on, getting run over by the BACKUP RB of the Packers? How can anyone take this game as an improvement?

  22. StormST says:

  24. chevyman2000 says:

Great point Storm I totally agree with you!

  25. step on me says:

chevyman2000 like I said the COMMENTS ARE COMPLETELY STUPID!!!!! They are not true. What happened to true fans. Again, ALL OF YOU STUPID FAKE FANS. KEEP YOUR STUP OPINIONS TO YOURSELF!!!!! I would like to see any one of you do better. I know that WOULD NEVER HAPPEN.

I am embarrased by fake fans. At least the Broncos still have some of us true fans!!!!!!

  26. blue diamond says:

I am as diehard as anybody.

But it is plainly obvious that calling a QB Sneak on 3rd and a long one is a TERRIBLE call.

How about some critical analysis from a TRUE GURU OF FOOTBALL.

    READ ON:

If we get the 1st down on the QB sneak, the best thing we can do is then spike the ball, and then on 2nd down throw a pass, try to win it. At most get one shot at the touchdown maybe. At worst we don’t get it and you saw the results.

So the best thing the QB sneak could have gained was one pass to win it.

So obviously you don’t do a QB sneak, because you can just take your shot right there, rather than risk getting NOTHING.

It is simple logic folks. If you do not understand, reread it.

It was the worst playcall I have ever seen. And that is saying something because I can go back to the calls in Buffalo, vs the Raiders, and vs Jacksonville to point out even MORE IDIOTIC PLAYCALLS from inside the 10.

We should be 5-2. But because of the PLAYCALLS inside the 10, we will be lucky to finish above .500.

I do not want Shanahan gone, but clearly HEIMERDINGER has wrecked this offense. Since he came in and Kubes left, the offense has been HORRID.

  27. orangecrush44 says:

Since when did we stop having faith in Jason Elam? That false holding call killed us. We definately had opportunities to win. Cutler is gonna be great!! Defense is still porous. Still only 1 game back in division. Don’t give up!!

  28. broncosfrance says:

Think about it : what if the steelers would have had the ball after Jason ‘s kick and what if we would have won the coin toss in this game ? The fact is we were in these two games we won one ond lost another but it could had been reverse . More important , we have what it take to return to the SB : a unique QB .Now it’s just a matter of putting things around him , like we did whith Elway ( it took not one season ) , like Dungy did whith Manning . Look , just a second at our offense : a line missing half of his starters , some receivers who would be on the bench in many other teams and undrafted rookies running back !! Even Brady had better weapons last year .Cuttler have the one thing that matter the most for a QB : poise but he can’t win alone like every other QB in this league . Last year , i was very impressed by the run the Colts did during the offseason , that was not Manning who impressed me , it was the running game , unstoppable and the running defense , that’s the two main reason they won last year and failed the 2 previous , manning was at his usual . This season ‘s not over , our team will improve week after week and years to come , we’ll dominate the AFC west .

  29. Vinci says:

Our up coming games are against the Lions, Chiefs, Titans, Bears, Raiders, Chiefs, Texans, Chargers and Vikings. That’s nine games left, and it would seem apparent that we could at least win seven of them, losing maybe once to the Chiefs and again to the Chargers. Their combined records are 28-30. A 10-6 record should get us into the playoffs so don’t lose faith!

The Vikings running game scares me, and it could be an upset if we can’t stop them.

  30. hrdnokd says:

Never in a million years did I think I’d see the day that Shanny would go soft and play someone because he wouldn’t stop complaining or lose his nerve in the redzone. I mean holly crap does Simeon Rice suck or what? All he does is complain, he simply can’t play football anymore and the entire organization should be ashamed to have him on the roster. Moss has been a great run stuffer and we start old legs instead? Then we have 3 shots at the endzone at the 1 and we call a friggin’ qb draw? SERIOUSLY?! Nate Webster still has a starting job in the NFL, stop laughing I’m serious.

  31. GO CUTLER says:

I REALLY ENJOYED WATCHING THE GAME LAST NIGHT . LETS GIVE BRETT A LOT OF CREDIT HE MADE 2 GREAT THROWS AGAINST 2 GOOD CORNERS. HANG IN THERE JAY YOUR PLAYING WELL PROUD TO BE A BRONCO FAN ON A TOUGH NIGHT . LETS WIN IN DETROIT SUNDAY . WE REALLY MISSED WALKER TONITE . GO BRONCOS !11

  32. johnymt2001 says:

Hey westy, still waiting for you to name Shanahan’s replacement…..

  33. LetPlummerPlay says:

WOW…..Mike Shanahan had to PERSONALLY ATTACK us at LPP. He could have WON the game with a proper call, instead he ATTACKS us by sending Jay in on a play JAKE PLUMMER would have successfully completed, meanwhile Jay didn’t even know what to do once the ball was snapped.

Seriously, for nearly three weeks I have kept my mouth shut about Cutler, but he just HAS NO HEART, no DESIRE, no Q-BALLS. Everyone screams at me, he’s a rookie, blah blah blah, he needs TIME!

Point is, Romo didn’t need the time did he? No, he’s a decent QB, so he came in and played better than the previous QB.

But for Denver, we just sit and watch Jay fumble and stumble his way to a 5-7 record overall.

It’s good to know Mike, that when we were 7-4 last year, you decided to start working on the 2010 season. Way to go coach!

  34. StormST says:

LPP: you are an idiot. Did you see the game? I think you just watched it, but you didn’t see anything. Jay doesn’t have heart or desire? Where do you get that from? If any QB has (had) a heart in Denver since Elway, than it’s Jay. He is calm, he has the desire to win at all cost and has the leadership to do it. Why do you think the other player voted him a captain? For his pretty eyes or his lovely smile? Last night he had a bad call coming in from Shanny, but he did everything he could, to make it happen. I personally think he had the first, but the refs were almost as big idiots last night, as you are and didn’t care. He has a banged up OL, his best WR and RB are injured, his defense is also full of injurys and Bates is calling plays like he doesn’t know what he is doing, and Jay still gives the team a chanche to win almost every game.

Jake could have made that run in the end, but it’s sure as death, that he couldn’t have been there, because he would have gotten through the 50 yard line…

  35. vraptor567 says:

well that was discouraging, the good news: Cutler really showed his potential I liked the “laser” analogy he clearly has the arm the team needs, bad news: no run, no defense, and what’s up with the lame play calls? anyone notice that GB a team known for no running game ran with success for 1/2 the game, Denver known to be a running team had no running game. Clearly we need to build a team here not just buy players as we go along. For a team with “star”corners how did those long passes get past us? if we can’t stop the run, or catch a wild bomb how can we win games? seems like the strategy of buying a team for the season isn’t working, it’s a gamble that does not seem to be paying off. What can I say, cut me and I bleed orange and blue, let’s hope for better next week. GO BRONCOS

  36. Broncofan1088 says:

LPP: Research before you post. Romo was not a rookie, he had sat the bench for a full season or two before he started in place of Drew. He’s been in the league much longer than Cutler has.

  37. mkp2477 says:

GOTTA VENT AFTER THIS LOSS!!! True fans call it like it is and dont pander to their team, regardless of the boneheaded decisions they make, fanATICS do dumb things like that. I’ve been sayin for years that Shanahans play callin, espcecially inside the redzone is horrendous at best. Yes it may have something to do with our undersized offensive lineman who cant blow anyone off the ball and get those tough redzone yards. But whose brilliant idea was it to have such small offensive lineman who cant move big d-lineman when it really counts? How many D-coordinator have we had in the last 5 years? No matter who it is the results still remain the same, so I gotta think its the so called genius of a head coach we have. Soft zone coverages are for idiots, and Bly should be fired! You dont pay corners as much as we have invested in Champ and Bly to let them consistently play 7-8 yards off receivers. (The 1st incomplete pass Favre had in the 2nd half came when we played press coverage). And what do we do the very next pass attempt? We play a soft zone, and what does Favre do? start another passin streak…. Wow!!! We gave up too much as far as personnel and $$ to acquire this guy. I wasnt a fan of his in Detroit and he’s worse now!!! I have never coached or managed a NFL game but even I know that its better to invest $$ in the guys up front on offense and defense(especially d-linemen). But not our genius of a coach. 3 million guaranteed to “Hot 97″ who has never been known as a run stopper and is now average at best at gettint to da qb? Whose brilliant idea was that? I agreed with Steinbrenner for gettin rid of Joe Torre, and Bowlen needs to stop allowing Shanahan to blow $$ on players who are not gonna be effective, and go ahead and buy out his contract and lets move on. Foxworth should have gotten the shot after the passin of D Will and we coulda invested that $$ in sum quality linebackers, becuz as of now we have one decent linebacker and two guys who are average at best. Missin Al Wilson so much now!!!

P.S Wow 3 million guaranteed for a guy who calls himself “Hot 97″?

P.S.S Fire Shanahan, and cut or trade Bly(need a more physical corner opposite da Champ)!!!!

  38. broncoinexile says:

LPP is a full on lobotomized imbecile and his “love” for plummer is embarrassing even for other stalkers.

Cutler moved the team down the field with less than 2 minutes and he did it by making plays.

LPP stop embarrassing yourself and stop annoying the rest of the world with your sycophantic ways. You’re as bad as the favreee love-fest put on by the announcers last night; except you’re even worse, because even at his best Jake was not as good as favreee. And — JUST IN CASE YOU FORGOT — plummer did not want to play anymore and he quit.

Although, I have to admit, comparing favreee to Michael Jordan is a pretty big stretch. As I recall, Jordan has more than one championship ring.

  39. vegasbronco says:

Why does everyone keep calling Cutler “great”? He has 12 starts under his belt. 12!!! “Great” is the most overused term in sports. He certainly has all the tools to become great, and I hope he turns into one of the all-time greats. At this point, though, he is a fairly new player who has not earned the “great” title. We are all spoiled for having watched Elway for so many years, but we need to give Cutler some time and room to develop before we start forcing these titles on him…..

  40. vraptor567 says:

    vegasbronco
we call cutler great because in those starts he is showing us the potential he has to lead the team to victory and skills way beyond the 12 start level . Did you watch that game? what an arm, and be very very glad he can bring us the passing game, since the run just isn’t getting us there. Not to many players with 12 starts show the poise and confidence Cuttler shows. so relax right now he is a rising star and I for one am glad to have him on our side

  41. WhiteHoss says:

Cutler ain’t great. Before you start shedding tears over that statement, let’s all take a deep breath and stop pressuring the guy, because between the media and the fans hailing him as the next this or that, Cutler’s going to have a nervous breakdown. He can become great, but he’s not great yet and he won’t become great with this current roster and coaching staff as it is, healthy or not–Shanahan is not and has never been a good rookie tutor. He can refine the games of seasoned pros like John Elway and Steve Young, but he’s never built a young QB–EVER–from the ground up. Cutler’s a gamer with brains, but he’s got shaky confidence and you can see it when he follows up big mistakes with overly cautious play on the next possession. After his “Denver would have burned Jake Plummer at the stake for that, but Cutler? Get ‘em next time, kid!” fumble, he didn’t get his confidence back for almost three whole possessions and by then it was too late for Superkicker to save the day yet again. Shanahan either needs to turn the offense over to a new, strong coordinator that he won’t override with his “genius” or find a new team. Show me the major differences between the Brian Griese era and 2006-07, seriously. Maybe Griese wasn’t the problem then, either…

coach, why? on the last series, where was the play-action 1 wr 3te pass from the 1st quarter? on the whole, it was a sloppy game but… it should have finished 17-13. shanahan, though a great coach, is out-smarting himself and second-third-fourth guessing himself. don’t scratch the offensive philosophy that got you 2 superbowl rings in denver just b/c of the post-elway qb inexperience/lack of talent. someday, you have to trust them/him (cutler, in this case) again to win another. hopefully someday soon.

with so many injuries, let’s do something radical on defense. how about a 3-4? or a 5-2? really use the supposed athleticism of the young ends. if it’s superbowl or bust as the coach says, let’s change stuff up… it’s week 9! it’s time for bold moves, if it really is superbowl or bust. a la last season… when it was, yes LPP, cutler for jake.

so, coach. are we bold? or… yeah… not with that defense… with more holes in it than yeah… those cheeseheads.

    so, nevermind, coach. nevermind.

keep breaking our hearts. then giving us hope. repeat. i’m still cheering, i’m still caught up in bronco orange. i’m still defending our players but secretly wish we get much better. … like family.

oh and #58, go about your business… it’s your job. get 10 or 15 tackles, then celebrate.

For the record, there are exactly three “Great” quarterbacks in all of the NFL:

    Peyton Manning
    Tom Brady
    Brett Favre

There are quite a few “Very Good” quarterbacks:
    Tony Romo
    Donovan McNabb
    Carson Palmer
    Drew Brees
    Matt Hasselbeck
    Ben Roethlisberger

Then there are the “Good” quarterbacks:
    Philip Rivers
    Jon Kitna
    Eli Manning
    Vince Young
    Jeff Garcia

Somewhere AFTER that last list tails off, that’s where Jay Cutler comes in. Can he move up quickly? Sure. But he just isn’t great yet. Ease up on that word, as vegasbronco said, it’s WAY overused.

WHITE HOSS JAY IS A GOOD CATEGORY RIGHT NOW. HE MIGHT BE GREAT SOME DAY. GO BRONCOS !11

Let’s sum it up. Rice and Webster play like crap. Our defensive play calling is crap. Our offensive play calling in the red zone is less than crap. Shanny’s excuses are crappy. The kid goes almost 90 yards and sets the team up for the win and Shanny loses his grapefruits. They have to win 7 of 9 to make the playoffs, God I hope we make some good changes before 2008 because 2007 is nothing more than a learning experience for Cutler.

  46. WhiteHoss says:

Cutler may be “Good” but he’s not better than any of the names I listed quite yet–no, not even Vince Young–and those weren’t even in any sort of order. Let’s be frank, if he’s still the 14th, 15th best QB in the league in a year or two, the city of Denver will lose it’s collective mind…again. But maybe this time is the charm and they’ll go after Shanahan instead of his THIRD hand-picked QB.

the term great here is 12 starts great, great for the team, great for the future, great arm (not the same as all time great, NFL great or Elway great) and if you check the stats for the “greats” you list you should be pleasantly surprised to see he does fit in quite well with Manning, Brady, Favre and others early in their careers. Don’t be so cheap with the praise the kid is doing great for a rook, and right now I’d say the bright spot for a team that can’t stop the run from a team with no RB.

  48. LetPlummerPlay says:

Whatever! I’m so OVER people saying Jay is great and it’s learning. What has he ever done! He throws hard? YES! He has a lean QB type body? YES! He looks like he’d be a good Qb? YES! He’s tall? YES!

BEYOND looking like he has the ability to be great, what else has he ever done?

To call Cutler great is to say Leinart and Young have already ECLIPSED Elway for God’s sake.

Get off the CUTLER is GREAT band wagon and see him for what he is. An average QB who was thrown into the fire WAY TOO SOON and for that, we may never see how good he could have been.

    You guys are terrible fans.

You know I have a good deal of Raider fans who are friends and NONE of them act like you do. Their team went 2-14 last season and they still have a better demeanor than you so-called fans.

I understand wanting your team to win – believe me I get just as frustrated as you guys do – but you get so caught up in your anger over the loss that you let it cloud your judgement.

Our primary issue, still, is a run defense. It looks alot better, but because of our struggles Bailey and Bly are still having to press more than they’d probably like and sometimes you get burned in that situation. It also does help that Favre placed those balls perfectly over the recievers shoulders BOTH times. It was a great play by Favre and Greenbay and I give them alot of respect.

And we’re a beat up team, too. Our offense has lost alot of the potency it should have – Rod Smith and Javon out, Henry out. Selvin Young is doing an amazing job (and I do think that holding call was BS) but having him AND Henry out there makes it a much more dynamic combination – you can punish that d-line with Henry and mix it up with screens to Young, etc. Having him out forces that run game to be alot more one dimensional and that hurts us. Martinez, Stokely, and Marshall have done an amazing job.

This season really looked good for us in the off season (laugh) and thats probably why you guys all feel so frustrated. But blaming Shanahan is ridiculous. He’s made some questionable calls, sure, but what coach doesn’t? In a league where Mcgahee, Peterson, L. J., and Ladanian are having games with LESS than 20 carries – you think OUR coach is making bad decesions?

Get a grip. Be a fan. And quit your whining. We’re not out of ’08 yet and ’09 has a silver lining. Some of you seem to forget that. I’m 21 years old and at least I have the maturity to understand this.

    Oh and LPP

How old are you? Thats a serious question.

I see you here every so often blaming Cutler for our losses and talking up Jake Plummer.

Dude, its over and done with. The fact that Jake immediately retired after getting traded makes me think that this was what he wanted. And you’re a fool if you blame Cutler. Everyone else who watches football sees the potential this kid has – why don’t you? You’re so caught up in OBSESSION with Jake that your making outright ridiculous assumptuons (on a play JAKE PLUMMER would have successfully completed) and focusing all the blame for a dissapointing season on the biggest bright spot. This kid has poise, is a leader, and has massive talent. His arm strength is something you just can’t teach. And did I mention he has poise? How many second year starters do you know that continuously, with under two minutes and the game on the line, orchestrate a drive to put us in position to win? Vince Young? Nope. Leinart? Nope.

Oh wait – didn’t those guys go ahead of Cutler in the draft?

    Yep.

Quit trolling man. Why don’t you go camp out in front of JPs house instead?
