Broncos-Cowboys: Fourth-Quarter Notes

August 18th, 2007 - 8:48pm by Andrew

9:30 P.M. CDT: Dallas quickly into scoring range as they look to reply to Denver’s 90-yard lightning bolt. A pair of Tyson Thompson runs helped the Cowboys move into the Denver red zone; the Cowboys now stand at the Denver 16.

9:40 P.M. CDT: Well, time to try again since the Internet connection is fading in and out like a radio signal from 1,000 miles away. Dallas up 31-13 after Isaiah Stanback — converted from quarterback — snagged a 15-yard pass from Brad Johnson. Denver deep in its own territory, facing second-and-20 after a holding penalty — the third 10-yard infraction on the offensive line in the last four series.

9:43 P.M. CDT: Broncos starting to rock it on third downs now … a 21-yard Patrick Ramsey-to-Quincy Morgan strike has the Broncos at the Dallas 41. Ramsey operating out of the shotgun now as the Broncos are in comeback mode, going with long-yardage offense and at least three wideouts on every down now.

9:47 P.M. CDT: Ramsey and Morgan connect for the touchdown, but give credit to Domenik Hixon for getting downfield and spawning contact that led to a pass-interference penalty which set the Broncos up in first-and-goal. Two plays later, Ramsey flung his second touchdown pass of the game, pulling the Broncos back within 11 points at 31-20.

9:58 P.M. CDT: Denver coaxes a punt, and now we get a chance to see Darrell Hackney in a comeback scenario. Hackney showed some late-game promise during a move-the-ball drill against the Cowboys on Thursday, when he converted a fourth-and-long to keep a drive alive. Right now, though, he’s in third-and-10 from the Denver 49.

10:00 P.M. CDT: No fourth-down magic — just an interception by Bobby Carpenter with 2:46 remaining.

10:05 P.M. CDT: Excellent open-field stop by Jeff Shoate to set up third-and-10 with 1:38 reamining. Broncos could get one more possession here — one more chance for Hackney to show some end-game skills.

10:07 P.M. CDT: But there’s only 22 seconds left. Hackney takes a knee, and that’s game.

    Uuuugggghhhh……
    Is it Preseason? Yes.
Are there injuries complicating things? Yes
Are they working out the kinks? Yes.
Should the 2nd team be playing better than the starters, even in a preseason game, even given a few injuries?
    No.
There is work to be done. Pray for healing for and improvement from our Broncos everyone.

Russ……The 2nd team’s play is irrelevant of the first team play. They are playing against the Dallas second team, so them playing better or worse isn’t really a legitimate comparison. Essentially the Dallas A sqad beat us, but our b squad is beating them.

is henry on the sideline? and when is hamilton gonna be back?

Oh man look at Green Bay 48 points….by the way you guys look at preseason they’re going to be the best offense in the league!! WOW

a few injuries…..man a TE is playing tackle amongst a whole load of other backups that were in from the start. Not to mention there is no game plan at all!!

Haven’t seen Henry on the sidelines, but then again, I haven’t been looking for him down there. Hamilton could be back next week but they’re being cautious with him, since it is the preseason.

forget the offense the defensive run game is what scares me no make that the whole defense, did we have starters in on def in 1st 2 quarters?

  7. fh247 says:

    Henry injury could kill us.

Even though its the preseason the 1st team defense is trying to work their kinks out…and even in Bates system I cant see some of our personale fitting in place

The main goal is to stop the run w/ the D-line and its looking worst than last year…they’re just not getting enough push to allow the LBs to cover their gaps and make the easy play

  9. fh247 says:

We need a healthy team mor than a good showing tonight. But we got neither hope the injuries are minor

by the way greenbays offense didnt put up 48 points it was their def

something the broncos seem to be lacking in right now

    Green Bay looked awesome tonight.

  12. fh247 says:

who cares what Green Bay does?

    Anonymous,
Good point regarding the 1st and 2nd teams.
Still a little uneasy after tonight though…

Russ…..I completely agree, not a stellar showing overall, certainly some things to work on, but then again this is why there is a preseason. It certainly hasn’t been a very good historical indicator of regular season success.

I didn’t even watch the game (didn’t get shown on any of my TV channels) but it sounds like the same thing that happened last week against SF. The center of that D-Line was porous. And the whole getting used to the scheme thing is now beginning to sound like bad excuse. Too, I can’t help but wondering if the loss of Al Wilson’s leadership and presence is somehow affecting the D. I know he probably wouldn’t be playing right now, but sometimes presence is enough to raise the level of play. So now it stands like this: We traded for potentially the best defensive secondary in the NFL, but lost the run stopping part of our D? Nobody will have to throw against us. And wait until San Diego & Kansas City come to town. Troubling this is, very troubling. Can’t wait to hear what Shanahan and Bates have to say about this…

It is very troubling. Hope the coaches have all the wrinkles and kinks ironed out by the 9th. Warren? Henry? Rod? Al? Eb? 5 great guy down for the count. That is a lot of men!!! Hope the rookies stand up and step up!
