Broncos-Colts: Fourth-Quarter Notes

September 30th, 2007 - 4:43pm by Andrew

6:28 P.M. EDT: Brutal efficiency for the Colts on their drive as the fourth quarter begins … but Joseph Addai is now slow to rise after being it at the Indy 45-yard-line. He gets up and leaves the field under his own power.

6:33 P.M. EDT: Broncos now need to tighten on defense; Colts have first-and-20 at the Denver 36 … and even with Addai out, the Colts can still pound the football; 22 yards later, and the Colts are back in the Broncos red zone.

6:35 P.M. EDT: Five-of-five for the Colts in the red zone … With 10:56 left, the Broncos trail 35-20.

6:37 P.M. EDT: Indianapolis now has 175 rushing yards and is averaging 7.0 yards per carry as the Broncos run defense continues to be gashed.

6:41 P.M. EDT: Cutler, under pressure, rolls right and heaves a deep pass for Brandon Stokley … but a pair of Colts defenders are there to stop the play.

6:42 P.M. EDT: Henry is back in. So much for my skepticisim. He promptly darts 12 yards for a first down. Broncos are down two scores, but their pace is not panicky.

6:43 P.M. EDT: Third-and-7 from the Denver 35 … Cutler in the shotgun … Selvin Young alongside him … Cutler under pressure, throws it short for Marshall and incomplete. With 8:41 left, the Broncos send the punt team onto the field.

6:44 P.M. EDT: Sauerbrun clobbers a 65-yard punt into the end zone for a touchback. Colts will take over possession with 8:33 left.

6:49 P.M. EDT: Colts again on the move; they are now at the Denver 43-yard-line with 6:50 remaining.

6:51 P.M. EDT: Colts now at the Denver 31 as the clock moves under five minutes … Indianapolis’ ground game is starting to bleed the Broncos’ hopes dry at this point.

6:57 P.M. EDT: Denver forces a stop on downs and uses its timeouts to preserve 2:38 on the clock … but all Adam Vinatieri has to do to put the Colts up three scores is hit a 22-yard field goal, which he does.

7:02 P.M. EDT: Dwight Freeney hits Cutler from behind, jarring the ball loose … The Colts recover at their 43-yard-line, and with the Broncos out of timeouts, the game is effectively done.

    we lost this one

    This is terrible

  3. alinden says:

They have no rushing d. Anytime we want to make an adjustment would be great.

  4. alinden says:

Can we try to do something different on D.

  5. underdog8 says:

Any idea why the Broncos didn’t suit up Gordon or Adams for this one? Not that they may have fared that much better but given their inability to stop the run why not stack up there? Playing at Indy is always tough for the D but overall the Broncos really need to take a long look at their defense soon if they want shot at the playoffs this season.

  6. dave34830 says:

how the HELL does Kenton Keith run all over us?

  7. alinden says:

    I’m gay

  8. westcoast says:

To Dave3483090 You still think they wont score 40 on us? It looks like they will rush for over 200yards against us. I take it that this is obviously exceptible? Let me guess, maybe our excuse this week is that Lynch didnt play. I guess we will find out in about an hour. I will have to say that I would love to see what coyer’s defense would have done with our offense this year.

  9. underdog8 says:

Who are you a fan of alinden? You say “torch US everytime” like you’re a Bronco fan but the rest of your comments sound like Colts trolling.

Stokely is as good a third WR as there is in the league.

The Broncos have 200+ yards rushing too, so obviously stopping the run is not the Colts strong suit either.

  10. AndrewMason says:

    Thank you for sharing, alinden.

  11. delirium_05 says:

underdog8, whatever gave you the idea the Broncos would make the playoffs? I’m taking this season as a rebuilding season, especially on defense. Hey, atleast we played pretty decent in the first half, right? Oh, and # alinden Says:

    I’m gay

    That’s just fantastic. *thumbs up*

  12. mikepenn says:

alinden’s password was easy to guess, so some Colts doorknob got cute with it…

Nobody in their right mind would post “I’m gay”…

alinden, change your password to something else :-)

  13. BroncoFan1018 says:

Hixon needs to be replaced, broncos defense needs to improve, and hopefully lynch and walker come back next week, we can still take the AFC west as long as our defense starts improving with more and more practice.

  14. Music1812 says:

Broncos new theme song – “Free Fallin!”

  15. underdog8 says:

Deliriium, I dunno, undue optimism? My pollyannaish nature? ;-) And also because the AFC West seems very winnable this year so if their D gets its act together at all they still could be best in that division…

    Ugh. Game over.

  16. underdog8 says:

Following the game on CBSSportsline/web, I didn’t realize that Walker wasn’t playing at all until now. That doesn’t help. No Walker, No Lynch. They still would’ve lost, but still…

  17. underdog8 says:

Oh man, and we’re gonna play a hungry, angry 1-3 Chargers team next week. That’ll be interesting. At least it’s at home.

  18. brovik_2000 says:

I must have missed something… why was Foxworth playing RCB? Where was Bly?

  19. Broncomania56 says:

Nana, nana, nana, na! hey, hey, goodbye…. This was the most single pathetic defensive football I’ve ever seen. Are u kidding me? What a joke. We will not make the play-offs this year. This defense is pathetic. Who’s decision was it to fire Larry Coyer. They should be fired. We did not have trouble against the run when he coached. Just needed the right corner to fix our passing problems. This defense looks so pathetic, lost, can’t make tackles, it’s absolutely disgusting. Champ Bailey won’t be making the pro-bowl this year, cause most teams won’t be passing on us. At this rate if he gets one interception it will be a miracle. Guess what all Broncos opponenets. If you have a decent running game, just run don’t worry about the pass cause it won’t be neccesary. I know, I know, John Lynch wasn’t playing. It doesn’t matter, our defensive scheme SUCKS!!!! FIRE This defensive coordinator. This year is over. If our offense cannot score on every drive (touchdowns) then we will be hanging our heads every sunday from here on out. Don’t count on denver making the play-offs it’s not gonna happen. We ABSOLUTELY SUCK this year. NO DEFENSE= NO WINS. Get ready Bronco’s fans we will be at the bottom of the AFC West next week. We have LT coming to town next week. His mouth is watering. He can’t wait to exploit Denver’s weakness. He’s gonna rush for 320 on 18 carries or some sick statistic. Thanks a lot for this spectacular defensive scheme. What a FREAKIN JOKE.

  20. Maceano says:

Let me just start out by saying our defensive is terrible. This defensive coordinator has come in and destroyed our deffense. What was wrong with Larry Coyer atleast he had some backbone!!! I loved how we didn’t blitz Manning at all. Obviously Manning is not that aware of the blitz the man panics everytime a lineman or linebacker moved an inch. He is only a pocket passer and is not efficient even at that, he is too limited in his ability. Atleast we should have stunted more! We had Manning right were we wanted him when we used the clock in the begining of the game. Injuries even hurt the Colts and we couldn’t capitalize on that. Watching the Colts play tonight opens my eyes to the fact that they are not as fundamentally sound as everyone hypes them up to be! This loss should have been a W. I hope other teams realize that Peyton Manning is in a QB system. Anywhere else this man would crumble. Anytime a lil pressure comes to him it is a horribly thrown ball! I would say he throws the best Duck in the leaue!!!

  21. Broncomania56 says:

Hixon is a Girl. Replace him NOW or you’ll keep getting crappy results. Or is that what Denver Bronco Football has become.

  22. westcoast says:

I am not worried about the Chargers because I told every one at work they they were going to miss the playoffs and evryone laughed at me. Whos lauging now. I have to say that the Raiders are looking like they could actually win the division. We have had 8 games (Pre season and regular) and our run defense is getting worse. Andrew why have we not fixed this problem? Also, I keep asking this question but why is Hixon returning the ball? He sucks!!!!!!!

  23. Maceano says:

Seriously we have to get to things out of here. HIXON AND THIS CRAPPY SCARED DEFFENISVE COORDINATOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. brovik_2000 says:

Is Coyer still around or did someone pick him up?

  25. NxtYrNvrArrives says:

I’m sorry (though not really), but how come it is that everyone seems to think we have great cornerbacks? They’re terrible (the whole defense is terrible)! Manning just completes, completes, maybe a couple of running games, then another completion, Touchdown! All the time! Absolutely no defense. Maybe they need to fire Bates. Just shake something up. Get Coyer back or something. I don’t believe that we have two of the top rated cornerbacks in the league. They are overrated and get beat frequently, especially against a good team. And even if they were the best to ever play the position, they couldn’t make 30 tackles per game to stop the offense’s surges that almost every team can make against us no problem. Especially in the second halves of their games. It is pathetic. Denver’s offense works their but off and for what? So the defense can proceed to throw it away on the following drive? I don’t know. I’m too frustrated and so maybe a little time off from watching some of their lowsy games might help. I have grown accustomed to watching all the time but it’s just getting to hard to do anymore unless they find a way to turn it around soon and it ruins a usually pretty good day for me.

  26. westcoast says:

Almost forgot. Broncomania56 I have to agree. Your frustration is totally obvious. What really sucks is that it’s obvious our coaches seem to be content with this being a rebuilding year. Since when is a rebuilding year exceptible in Denver. Please Mr. Bowlen step in and get this fixed. Is Coyer still out there. Bring him back.

  27. Anonymous says:

Bates scheme is terrible. its obvious we dont have the right personel for it. They will not win another game with this whole bend but not break mentality. They need some linebackers who know how to play, and some dt’s that can do somthing other than stand up once the balls snapped. ian gold should be benched and only play special teams. hixon should not play period. Travis henry runs his ass off, but is hurt after every run. the future is not looking bright if some changes arent made soon.

  28. NxtYrNvrArrives says:

And also, I don’t even have to mention the rushing defense. What happened? Guys just stand around until the runner gets close and then they say ‘Oh, maybe I should tackle this guy!’ Either that or they are not ever in the right position on the field in which case is the Def. coordinator’s fault mostly. Hmmmmm……

  29. RazR says:

Our defense was playing way too scared. I know they didn’t want to get burnt by the pass… but guess what? We just got burnt with the run instead. I’m upset with our defensive coordinator. Where were the adjustments?? It seems his game plan was to take away the passing game no matter what. Problem with Manning & his Wide recievers… you can’t take them out of the game. You HAVE to play the Colts tough. Everytime you see the Colts lose… it was because Manning had to run away from pass rushers. His passes aren’t so accurate when he’s running for his life. At LEAST make him throw it away.

Broncos offense gets a B+ for their efforts.
Defense & coordinator get an F for the past two games….

  30. tyson says:

coyer coaches linebackers for tampa bay. what a downgrade we got in bates. We had a record setting d for the first half of last year, then we stalled, but now we are going to set a record for rushing yards given up

  31. Broncomania56 says:

Where is Coyer????? Unfortunately it’s too late, because the majority of the personell is gone. Boy, this is so frustrating. Not used to seeing this from the Broncos. I’ve seen them loose, but to play bad this consistently is obsured. We have always been contenders. Now we are going backwards. Our offense is good, and will get better, but the defense?????

  32. Maceano says:

Defense is a problem but so is field position! We need to have better kickoff coverage and better returns. Why is special teams a problem? Where is Al Wilson we should get him back. Dont gt me wrong I like DJ Williams but he is not a middle linebacker. We need a big run stuffer in the middle!

  33. brovik_2000 says:

    Thansk Tyson – bummer…

  34. brovik_2000 says:

    Thanks Tyson – bummer…

  35. brovik_2000 says:

Unfortunately, Wilson’s career is over. He is sorely missed…

  36. westcoast says:

    Does Coyer have a brother?

  37. tyson says:

no problem man. i am only 19 years old, but in my years of watching denver, i have never been this frustrated. I dont know how you guys feel, but ian gold needs to go. He is the size of a small safety, that tries to hit like he is 6 3, 250lbs. he doesnt wrap up, and doesnt bring enough beef to take guys down at his size. move dj back to will. bring in a mlb, or even move nate webster into the middle, he at least brings it when he hits

  38. tyson says:

on a site the other day it posted that al wilson was healthy enough to play, and wouldnt like anything more than to come back to denver. you can see the defense misses als intensity. Nate is the only guy who ever jumps around after a hit

  39. brovik_2000 says:

Why was Foxworth playing CB toward the end of the game? Where was Bly? Playing Safety or was he injured? Manning just chewed Foxy up…

  40. D-B24 says:

Denver needs to step it up next week it is do or die next week against San Diego

  41. FireShanahan says:

How about that guy who is head of it all? Check out the name. lol. People thought I was crazy or not really a Broncos fan when I knew we weren’t that good starting the season. It’s not that I’m not a Bronco fan but I was doing what people are doing now. Telling it like it is. Shanny got all these guys and the play calling in the red zone suckssssss. He either goes to Jumbo which tells you that it’s a power run or 5 WRs which tells you that were going to pass. Duh. You talk about Bates, lets get this guy outta here. Old Shanny does not have it and never did. You can talk about Stokley being as good a 3rd reciever there is. Wow. What team you know is preparing to stop or beware of Stokley? You call that a great free agent signing? I can’t even mention the biggest of them all. The versatile, flexible, great, reliably, Super Dan! Yeah, they line him up here, line him up there, but nobody cares. He is no one to fear and he’s worth 30 something mill? If you line him up on the outside they know you’re not goi8ng to throw him the ball. He’s not in the second tier of TEs (Witten, Shockey, Winslow) much less the Gates and Gonzos. 30 mill? Selah. NO one is game planning for him either. Hixon? He’s young but should not be returning kicks, just like last year when Shanny (dummy) had Brian Clark doing it last year with no success and Quincy Morgan was on the roster. This guy needs to go. I tell you guys the truth. He needs to go. I was saying years ago, hire Kubiak but now look. Well, long season, long hopes, lots of worries.

  42. BroncsCheer says:

I don’t know whether it’s the scheme or the players, but Denver’s front seven has got to be the worst in the NFL. We desperately need a middle linebacker who can sniff out the guy with the ball, and we need OLBs and d-linemen who can play off a block. You can understand why TB let Ian Gold go, and why Nate Webster is a journeyman. There were almost no running plays today where we stopped Addai or whatever chump (Kenton Keith?!) they brought in behind him for less than 4 yards, and that will kill us all year long. It’s too bad, because the offense is showing promise, and I love B Marshall and S Young. But as has been well noted here, Hixon is pathetic, and I don’t understand why Sauerbrun can’t put kickoffs higher or into the end zone when he can hit 65 yard punts. The AFC West is wide open, and Denver has no greater claim to it than anyone…

  43. Tobin says:

every player on this team is absolutely abismal….no one plays with a sense of passion or pride….all they care about is their paychecks…..for god sake they cant even make a tackle…ive stuck by this team thru everything my whoile life and i realy think im done with them

  44. brovik_2000 says:

It wouldv’e been nice for us to have gotten a small, quick, fact returner – like Dante Hall or like the guy the Chargers have…

  45. SuperBowlBoundBroncos says:

IM GLAD I GOT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE CALL “CHIEFED”.I WAS BETTER OFF WATCHING THE KC VS SD GAME.I DUNNO BUT I HAVE A FEELING THE RAIDERS WILL WIN THE DIVISION.OVERALL THE BRONCOS SUCK REAL BAD RIGHT NOW.WHO THE HECK IS JIM BATES??I’VE NEVER HEARD OF THAT GUY.WHAT WE NEED IS A NEW DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR AND A MIDDLE LB.OR ELSE WE COULD END UP 8-8 OR WORSE!!

P.S. I MAY START ROOTING FOR MY SECOND FAVORITE TEAM COWBOYS IF THE BRONCOS DONT GET ANY BETTER.IM JUST SICK OF THEM RIGHT NOW.

  46. Number 83 says:

Who said Al Wilson is done? I’ll tell you something, I know Al Wilson, and I know and go to the same doctor that he does. (or at least used to when he was in Denver) Al Wilson is NOT done, and he’ll be playing next year…… for the Raiders. I say the Raiders because he’s pissed at the Broncos. Pissed because his neck has been an issue for 3 seasons, but yet the Broncos had him keep playing, and his condition worsened to the point where he couldn’t be traded to the G-Men, and he couldn’t continue to play for us because he can’t pass a physical anywhere right now. His injury needs about 1 and 1/2 years to have recovered enough in order to pass a physical and play. He’ll play, and it’ll be with the Raiders…… right after he sues the Broncos.

  47. delux304 says:

ALL i have to say is wait till that one guy, “LET PLUMMER PLAY” here’s about this….

  48. BroncsCheer says:

LET PLUMMER PLAY is a joke. Cutler’s not the problem…

  49. Broncomania56 says:

Tobin, I hear what your saying. I’ve been a Bronco Fan since 1979. I never miss a game. Trust me my wife hates it, but if denver wins then being in the dog house a few hours is worth it. I was born into a family of Bronco Fans. I know your only saying your done with the Team out of anger. I also know after these kinda losses, I feel the same Damn Way!!!!!. I’ve lived and died by Bronco Football, even played high school football for a team I chose when I was 11 because of the colors. Blue and Orange. This is truly trying times for Broncos fans. Maybe the coaching staff should read our comments. This will be a tragic season, no doubt about it. Thank you to the genious who fired Coyer and Gave us Bates. WOW!!!! we are so much better than before. I say this in the most sarcastic tone. Keep watchin, we’ll get better, next year….

  50. westcoast says:

Andrew, who was it that fired Coyer anyway? Also it bugs me how all Shanny kept saying was that not making the playoffs was not exceptable and a lot of heads rolled yet now all I hear out of his mouth is “we have to get better”. No crap. I say fix the problem and quit giving us excuses. Admit you screwed up releasing Coyer and fix the problem. If not bring in Bill Cower.
