Third-quarter notes from Arrowhead Stadium …
8:50 P.M. CST: John Fogerty has cleared the field, and the Broncos and Chiefs are back for the second-half kickoff, moving from left to right on the television … The Chiefs’ paid attendance is the highest since a 1996 against the Chiefs.
8:52 P.M. CST: Champ Bailey mauled Eddie Kennison to jar the football loose after a pass right in the former Bronco’s breadbasket, but another costly Broncos penalty gives the Chiefs another chance, turning a third-and-8 into a third-and-3. Green makes the Broncos pay for Demetrin Veal’s penalty, and another Chiefs march is resuscitated by a Denver infraction.
8:55 P.M. CST: Pressure by Ebenezer Ekuban forced a hurried Green pass on second-and-6, but on third down, Samie Parker snares a pass and goes 31 yards with it — with 19 of those yards coming when Darrent Williams missed a tackle.
8:56 P.M. CST: Kansas City settles for a field-goal attempt after Bailey hits Kennison as a Green pass comes in. The kick sails through the uprights, and Kansas City’s lead is back to two scores with 11:20 left in the quarter.
9:02 P.M. CST: Disaster for the Broncos as Patrick Surtain intercepts Jake Plummer’s errant pass …
9:05 P.M. CST: … and averted when former Bronco Lenny Walls is whistled for an illegal-use-of-hands penalty that was committed so far away from the play that he might as well have been in Topeka.
9:08 P.M. CST: There go the Chiefs fans with the Tomahawk Chop again. But it proves irrelevant after Mike Bell runs the Broncos to the Kansas City 11-yard-line for a first down.
9:13 P.M. CST: Three clutch, but short completions to Stephen Alexander, Rod Smith and again to Alexander have the Broncos in the Chiefs end zone for the first time all year. Both of this game’s touchdowns so far have come after penalties revived drives; the difference now is Kansas City’s post-interception drive to a game-opening field goal.
9:15 P.M. CST: Denver’s special teams continue to struggle after Paul Ernster’s kickoff gets the Chiefs field position at their 40-yard-line.
9:22 P.M. CST: Kansas City has begun the process of capitalizing … moving into scoring range and then to the Denver red zone after sprinting 21 yards on a second-and-8 play.
9:24 P.M. CST: Good pressure on the final two plays of the third quarter helped the Broncos escape from the series with a Kansas City field-goal try. The kick will come after the teams change ends.
