Broncos-Chargers: Third-Quarter Notes

December 24th, 2007 - 7:44pm by Andrew

6:44 P.M. PST: Matt Prater’s first kickoff as a Bronco sails 64 yards … but San Diego will start their first second-half series at its 16 after a holding penalty. LaDainian Tomlinson is back in the game.

6:45 P.M. PST: San Diego on the move, up to its 39-yard-line … we have now seen all three Chargers runners on this drive as Michael Turner and Darren Sproles have each checked in.

6:46 P.M. PST: Nice tackle by D.J. Williams on Darren Sproles.

6:47 P.M. PST: Another third-down conversion by San Diego … Philip Rivers finds Antonio Gates, who had a nice little shove to the chest of Dre’ Bly as the ball was en route … no call, and the Chargers are at the Denver 37.

6:49 P.M. PST: Chargers now at the Denver 20.

6:51 P.M. PST: Broncos are challenging a Vincent Jackson reception at the Denver 10.

6:54 P.M. PST: The reception is upheld. San Diego has first and goal.

6:55 P.M. PST: Two carries to the right side pick up the score … the first one to Tomlinson and the second one to Turner. A flag flies, however … and the Turner touchdown will be nullified, much to the consternation of the crowd and the person who chooses the stadium’s music, who plays lyrics that go, “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch.”

6:56 P.M. PST: Touchdown, San Diego … Rivers finds Chris Chambers across the middle in space … Chambers was hit at the 2-yard-line but flew over the goal line for the score. The drive chewed up 7:04 of the clock, covered 84 yards and took 11 plays to execute … Denver now trails, 23-0.

7:02 P.M. PST: Denver in desperate need of a scoring drive now … The Broncos began this series with 55 yards from scrimage.

7:03 P.M. PST: Brandon Marshall with a 15-yard catch to move the Broncos to their 49-yard-line.

7:04 P.M. PST: Broncos now in third-and-8 at the San Diego 49 … Jay Cutler finds Marshall again on third down … he springs forward as though he were flung by slingshot, leaving a defender flat-footed before finally falling at the San Diego 21 … Broncos have their deepest foray into Chargers territory since their opening series.

7:07 P.M. PST: Cutler looked for Tony Scheffler across the middle … Looked like there was contact on Scheffler before the football came in, but there was no call … Clinton Hart gets the interception.

7:09 P.M. PST: Chargers start at their 8-yard-line after a penalty at the end of the runback.

7:11 P.M. PST: Two plays later, a fumble … Marcus Thomas pounces on the loose football that Billy Volek lost on an odd attempt at a handoff to Michael Turner.

7:13 P.M. PST: A handoff for one yard, two incompletions and then Matt Lepsis hits the grass in obvious pain.

7:14 P.M. PST: Lepsis is sitting up now, but is still being treated on the field … now the medical staff helps him to his feet.

7:14 P.M. PST: Lepsis leaves the field under his own power.

7:15 P.M. PST: Jason Elam hits the 23-yard field goal … Broncos now trail 23-3 with 2:47 left in the quarter.

7:18 P.M. PST: Prater’s second Broncos kickoff sails 64 yards … and is returned 25 yards by Darren Sproles to the San Diego 31.

7:19 P.M. PST: San Diego goes three-and-out in its second series with Volek at the helm.

7:21 P.M. PST: Broncos take over at their 19 … Cutler finds Marshall for 10 yards and a first down on the first play of the series.

7:24 P.M. PST: A nice run by Cutler to the San Diego 47 closes the quarter.

I’m at a friends home with no cable – I knew AM would be faithful to keeping me up to date! Thanks… Considering what I read, we are lucky to only be down 16…

Doing my best, rev, even though this night is becoming one of the worst unless the Broncos can pull themselves off the mat.

TURNER FOR 6! HERE IT COMES!

  5. AK-Broncomaniac says:

    wow…this is ugly…

I’ve been preaching “we need to keep thinking about winning”, and I still believe that…but at this rate, we will end up with a higher draft pick than I was hoping for.

    Cutler has *no* time tonight…

Our defense looks pedestrian, at best.

At least they just got a holding call…it might just lead to another FG. :)

    GO BRONCOS!! (still believin’….)

  6. bmarsh111 says:

    damn, 6 anyways

  7. AK-Broncomaniac says:

    nope…TD Chambers….wow.

  8. West Coast says:

I can see it now…..San Diego 40 Denver 3….And Shanny will say at the press conference..”We need to get better” Please Mr. Bowlan bring in a entire coaching staff. Start with a new head coach.

  9. Music1812 says:

And just think, we still have one game left in the season!!

  10. vinster572 says:

how many times has bly been beaten tonight? its ridiculous

  11. Broncogirl1985 says:

Where in the hell is our offensive line?

  12. bmarsh111 says:

alright time for a poll, broncos vs. grandview hs, who wins?

  13. rev79 says:

Which only proves that you DO care about the Broncos, and it shows – and that is why we are glad you are around AM – Thanks for sticking with us even through the tough seasons. Living in K.C. it’s still a good year because we beat the Chiefs twice! :) Little victories – Hopefully we can raise the bar next year.

  14. bmarsh111 says:

said it once, i’ll say it again, BLY BLOWS. foxworth is twice the corner he is. he mason, can you go place a red card in blys locker. tell him “we’ve decided to go another route”

  15. Music1812 says:

On a positive note for the future – Cutler, Young, Marshall!

  16. bmarsh111 says:

imagine if we played the patriots?! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha….CHUMP ON MOSS? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha BLY COVER STALLWORTH? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  17. bmarsh111 says:

great play denver, i guess elway will still be tied for most games played since we can’t even get elam on the field. hey mason how fast do you run the 40? you might be able to try out for linebacker next year. just dont do that arms crossed, miami, i’m a prick celebration after you stop a guy after a 8 yd run

  18. bmarsh111 says:

he we go 3 and out and a fg

  19. denverrules5201 says:

everybody wants to blame the coaches but somewhere along the way the players need to take some blame. Our defensive players celebrate everytime the make a tackle, thats similiar to a dad boasting about taking care of his kids, duh idiots that what your supposed to do. They should be ashamed. Well in the middle of this we recovered a fumble, and the d is playing good its just the play calling on 3rd down instead of sending pressure they sit back in a zone and thats on the coaches. We have no leader on offense and I cant remember the last time that has happen on a broncos team

  20. bmarsh111 says:

great call there, keep whining cutler. what are you like 14?

  21. Music1812 says:

Why are we kicking a FIELD GOAL?

  22. bmarsh111 says:

down by 23?!?!?!?! with nothing on the line and you kick it shanny so you dont get the goose egg, this whole team is spineless. i’m out, good luck marshall, you’re the only one with talent on this team. hope you didn’t sign a long contract. PEACE

  23. frohawk15 says:

finally a turnover, finally a drive that starts deep in opponents territory, and still the same dismal redzone results

  24. denverrules5201 says:

why are we kicking a field goal? we have no chance at playoffs, we are down 23 and we are kicking a field goal? Wow, the most exciting thing about tonight was the bud light dude commercial. San diego is not that much better than us they just have better game plans, travis henry has no problem finding holes in his women back cant find the hole to get into the end zone, please cut him on the plane ride home

  25. stephanie_hollis says:

Take a sedative bmarsh, lol you sound like your 14. If you in your delusional state, think that Foxworth can cover anyone, you are not watching the same game I am. Bly and Fox have both been torched tonight and all season.

  26. ruiteni says:

    Pass Block anyone?

How about a Quarterback hurry… I know a sack would be asking way too much from our front 4 for Christmas.

  27. denverrules5201 says:

andrew any way you can get me a fax number so I can fax my resume to bowlen to coach the broncos in some form next year, because i can do a better job of getting the players motivated

  28. West Coast says:

Well there is the 3 I told you will will end with. Now lets watch the Chargers end up with 40. Down by 23 and we kick a field goal. Shanny you are a freakin idiot.

This is my first comment but I have to vent a little. Im a die hard fan but here are of the issues I think that needs to be addressed.

    Coaching
    1. Im not exactly sure who is calling the offensive plays but it is horrible. Gameplan sucks pretty much every game and every situation especially important downs/drives. I know we have our injuries but passing to Marshall every play is not fooling anyone.
    2. Offensivie coordinator needs to go for sure and Im starting to wonder if Shanny needs to go as well. Luv Shanny but it appears he lost his touch. The bootleg and zone blocking is just not working for obvious reasons. O-line even if everyone is healthy is just not cutting it. Too undersize and o-line push what so ever. Teams are just prepared for the same stuff from Shanny.
    3. D-Coord. dont have a clue. Have to go by all means. There are so many issues with players missing tackles, assignments etc. Also how in the world you are not prepared for the bootleg against houston.
    4. Special teams appear to improve just a little but still doesnt cut it. Just horrible.

Things to address for next year (not in order of importance)
    1. Need big athletic offensive line. Small guys just not working as d-ends/tackles are bigger, stronger and faster these days. This is the main reason why we cant score in red zone.
    2. RB situation still needs to be addressed. Need a strong, fast every down back. Selvin and Hall can definitely back up.
    3. Still need another receiver that can stretch field and make big plays. Hopefully walker comes back healthy.
    4. D. Graham sucks may need to address this.
    5. Dline is horrible. Dumervil is impressive but thats it. I know guys are young but they need help in every way tackles for sure.
    6. LBs – move dwill to weak need strong and middle through free agency. There are not too many strong side lbs right out of college to start and make impact.
    7. Need studs at safety. Abdullah is okay but need more time everyone else needs to go although i still luv lynch he is not cutting it no more.

    Bright spots
    1. Cutler, Marshall
    2. Champ still the man. The run d is horrible so he was looking for run alot and in single cover a lot more. Still the best corner and by far best tackler for corners. Against texans they put wr in motion to take bailey from that side and ran to the ball where he left. I think foxworth should play corner a lot more than safety.

I still luv the broncos and always will no matter what but we are definitely in a rebuilding stage. I dont expect too much for the next couple of years especially because all of the issues cant be addressed in one year.

  42. ITSHATTER says:

ITS OK FOR THE CHARGERS TO WAVE BY TO THE BRONCOS BECAUSE THEY DIDNT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS . BUT THE PATRIOTS BEAT THE CHARGERS LAST YEAR AND DID THE SAME THING L.T. SAID THEY DIDNT ACT LIKE PRO PLAYERS THE SAME GUY THAT GOT MAD AT RIVERS BECAUSE THEY WHERE NOT WINNING EARLY THIS SEASON , SO WHERE WAS L.T. TONIGHT AT THE PRESS MEETING TO SAY WE DID NOT ACT LIKE PRO PLAYERS WHEN WE WAVED BYE BYE BYE TO THE BRONCOS FOR NOT WINNING L.T. U R TEAM IS NOT GETTING PAST THE PATRIOTS IN THE PLAYOFFS THE ONLY THING U GUYS CAN SAY IS, U MADE IT THERE BUT NO 2 BACK 2 BACK RINGS LIKE THE BRONCOS. SO KEEP HIDING THE TEARS BEHIND THAT TINT FACE MASK L.T. POOR SPORT.

  43. ramboskithefan says:

yah the Chargers are the most disrespectful l team in the league….every player on the DLINE is a chump!! they all make a little tackle and flex on everybody or do sum spaz dance!! i can live with that..but to have Rivers yelling at Cutler and other broncos the whole time…even Champ like he has ever beat him consistently!! THen after a few drives, Rivers is still acting like a horses ya know what!! i hope he gets crushed bad in the playoffs…i mean bad!!! his cocky look on his face will be tears!! LT is the man,, but he even got cought up in all the trash talk tonight!! I heard someone say that he said the broncs were not pro players tonight…maybe not in terms of play..but in attitude, they def one that contest!!

  44. sdfan4life says:

itshatter is an idiot. LT is class. as anyone who plays the game agrees. what happened in sd by the pats, is not the same. (what a stupid comparison).the broncos started the trash talk, but the cameras only wanted to show some drama. i was there. rivers went overboard for sure, but was definitle
y provoked. What you saw of LT was him reacting to the broncos talking trash. please , the broncos are a class act. dont spoiled it with whining. they only showed you what they did for ratings. (it worked)
