Broncos-Chargers: Fourth-Quarter Notes

November 19th, 2006 - 9:33pm by Andrew

Broncos-ChargersNotes from the fourth quarter of the Broncos’ showdown with the San Diego Chargers.

8:42 P.M. MST: Mike Bell got just enough on fourth-and-1 to keep Denver’s drive alive, moving the Broncos to the San Diego 42.

8:47 P.M. MST: Perhaps Marty Schottnehimer couldn’t believe that Javon Walker made the grab near the east sideline that moved the Broncos into San Diego’s red zone. The Chargers’ replay challenge failed, however, and the Broncos kept possession at the San Diego 18.

8:50 P.M. MST: As the Broncos face third-and-7 from the 15, they do so having already consumed seven minutes and five seconds of the second half. It won’t be much more, though, as Jake Plummer drops the shotgun snap.

8:53 P.M. MST: Jason Elam’s secnd field goal of the night caps a drive that chewed up seven minutes and 38 seconds; the Chargers, though, are down only one score and have back-to-back touchdown drives in their rear-view mirror.

8:57 P.M. MST: The Chargers gained 155 yards on the 13 plays that followed Williams’ interception return for a touchdown — an average of 11.9 yards per play.

9:00 P.M. MST: Vincent Jackson, a Colorado Springs native, has a nine-inch advantage on Darrent Williams — and he used it for the touchdown reception that gives San Diego a one-point lead with 6:45 remaining.

9:07 P.M. MST: Denver uses three plays to get a first down, moving to the San Diego 32. The clock drips below the five-minute mark.

9:08 P.M. MST: Exactly what the Broncos didn’t want on a drive that has begun with a ball-control bent — a 6-yard loss for Damien Nash, pushing the Broncos into second-and-16. Nash, though, picks up 12 yards on the ensuing screen pass, setting up a crucial third-and-4 from the Denver 38.

9:09 P.M. MST: Plummer looks for Brandon Marshall, who tries to make a one-handed reception up the right sideline. He gestures for a flag, but doesn’t get one.

9:11 P.M. MST: Denver down to one timeout after opting to go for it on fourth down, and Jake Plummer is intercepted by Drayton Florence, who returns it to the Denver 24.

9:33 P.M. MST: A wild last few minutes doesn’t help Denver, which falls 35-27 to fall one game behind in the AFC West race.

Why is it that when the Broncos win, Plummer fans say Jake did it all! He won the games for us, then when we lose, we get excuses from Plummer fans???

My 12 year old son has been more accurate all season than Plummer, and he plays with much more passion.

And…. Elway will always walk on water in my opinion! He was one of the greatest QB’s of all time just in his two minute drills!

This is absolutely unbelivable, well ladys and gentelmen, Jake Plummer has done it again. It looked like a miracle was going to take place but then Jace fumbled it away. To all the broncos fans that are reading this, IT IS TIME FOR JAY CUTLER, thats all there is to it, Jake is not good at all. He cant even get the ball to Jevon Walker, one of the best receivers in the game when you get him the ball. And dont even get me started on the interception, Mike Shannanhon put all his trust into Jake and what does he do? He does exactly what he has done all dam season, throw the ball directly to the guy in the other jersey, this is just ridiculous, im telling you, Jay Cutler would be doing alot better than Jake right now, and he is probably a better QB…actually….he is defineltly a better QB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a long time Denver fan but, the Broncos simply got outplayed and outcoached by a better, more complete team in the Chargers. Why is everyone so surprised by this loss? You can’t let your Homerism blind you to the fact that LT, Rivers, and company are the real deal. I would hate to see the results if the Merriman and Castillo would have been playing on Defense for the SD. Well I guess we get another chance in a few weeks to change the game plan (and the quarterback).

….the reason im showing these stats are because ive seen alot of people talking about how great John Elway was and putting down Jake Plummer at the same time. If you look at these stats you can see theres not a very big difference between the two when comparing their stats. Not to take anything away from Elway but if you look at Elways first 10 years compared to Plummers its amazing how close the two are, and not to mention Plummer played his first 6 years in Arizona. I admit i wasent impressed with Plummers game sunday night(expecially the droped snap) but he didnt lose the game himself, the whole team lost the game, between droped balls, bad passes, the defence giving up 28 points in the second half, special teams giving up great field position to the other team and not to mention where our offence had to start at and having to go 80+ yards just about every drive and on the last drive having to start at the 1 yard line. I just think everyone needs to support the quarterback we have thats winning the games instead of critisizing him all the time and wanting to put in a rookie quarterback thats not proven yet. Everyones talking about how great Romo, and Rivers is playing but they have been in the league for a few years..theyre not rookies thats why thyre not playing like rookies. Now lets look at the QB’s that are rookies….Young & Leinart for example. Go online and check out their stats…..not so good, so why would you want to put in a rookie QB?…were 7-3. Shany knows what hes doing thats why hes Coaching the NFL and were not, and thats why hes been Denvers head coach for all these years. Plummer may not be Elway or the best QB to ever play the game, but he wins games….what more can you ask for?

  5. delux304 says:

I say bring in BYRON LEFTWICH and trade cutler for a high draft pick and a two quality defensive lineman.

  6. Frostman says:

Demike69ss is right on. Thanks for the stats. Those who would pin all of the Broncos’ woes on the quarterback are incapable of seeing the big picture.

Nothing wrong with a fan wanting his or her team to win the Superbowl.

There’s something MAJORly wrong with a fan not supporting the entire team.

Shanahan is doing the best he can with what he’s got.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. kjkbronco76 says:

No commenta about the refering in this game?

  8. leebov says:

Delux im in the same page as you…..We need defensive linemen or we are going nowhere fast……It doesn’t matter if we have peyton manning at qb……………………

  9. leebov says:

Pressure on the opposing QB………………..we have none, I know that Courtney is hurt but come on….the rest of the defense is soo good, but they cant penetrate the line to disrupt the qb……….Im frustrated. The problem is not jake its the inability to stop the pass….Shanhan had no confident in his dfenese so he went for it on 4th down, i would have done the same thing, He should have done that vs. Peyton manning….

  10. Broncoz_Dude says:

Remember the season is by no means over. Shany will rethink his plan and beat KC in their house and build on that for the next Chargers game in SD and that will put us right back where we need to be. Just keep the faith and don’t beleive the hype!

  11. broncosfromaway says:

any QB did better than Jake since John left? Broncos wins as a team and lose as a team. Please leave ur QB and coach alone.

  12. BrcsFn4ever says:

GIve me a break with the stats. Elway had the intangibles, and if you are going to even try to compare Plummer to Elway you should be banned from ever watching football again!!!! Elway very rarely if ever made the bonehead plays in critical situations, if anything he was exactly the opposite, playing incredibly when he needed to. LET THE CUTLER ERA BEGIN!!!!!
