Notes from the fourth quarter (wholly unoriginal opening, I know) …
7:19 P.M. PDT: Two passes, two incompletions as the 49ers attempt to turn first-and-goal into their first touchdown since the first quarter. (That’s a lot of firsts.)
7:20 P.M. PDT: If at first you don’t succeed … after Steve Cargile was denied a goal-line interception on a tipped ball in the second quarter, he got an errant end-zone pass in the fourth.
7:23 P.M. PDT: Three-and-out for the Broncos, but Todd Sauerbrun got off his best punt of the night, covering a net of 43 yards.
7:31 P.M. PDT: On the field … Kenny Peterson treated before leaving the field, and the Broncos finally force a second-half punt, stopping the Niners at the Denver 45-yard-line with 11:26 remaining in regulation. We also have a Darrell Hackney sighting; he takes over at quarterback.
7:41 P.M. MDT: The game is stabilizing, and if Lindsey Nelson were alive and here, he would intone, “After an exchange of punts, we move ahead to further action …”
7:47 P.M. MDT: A couple of first downs — one via a Cecil Sapp run, one thanks to a pass interference — and the Broncos are doing what they most need to do now — drain some clock.
7:54 P.M. MDT: … but did the Broncos leave just enough time for the Niners to score? Shaun Hill has them just past the Denver 40 before the two-minute warning.
8:03 P.M. MDT: Louis Green is listed as a starter. He’s out there with the third team. But his end-zone deflection of Shaun Hill’s past was a first-team play, and now the Broncos just have to run out the clock to pull out a preseason-opening win.

I may already be too late, but I want to start the Nate Webster helmet fly-off season tally. Seems like twice in practice the other day, accompanied by around 4 more against the ‘Niners. At this rate we’re looking at a guy whose helmet spends more time laying in the grass than David Carr, this tally could be over 50 by the end of the season. Get that man a chin strap–
Nate’s helmet problem…it has to be the “dreads” on his head. If anyone was worried about his knee staying healthy over the season, they may have to add worrying about a head injury if helmet keeps coming off like that.
What’s the status of Andre Hall?
And on the fashion report, we had some “fan” in a Denver Jersey and an embarrassing fluffy white dalmation thing on his head. Um, way to represent dude…
I did kind of like Mr. Bowlen rockin’ the Hilo Hattie black silk cap to match his jacket. Must have been fresh of the jet from the islands???
I flew up to the game from So Cal and seen the fan with the Dalmation suit. He was sitting to the left of us. It was the complete suite not just the top. It was awesome. I took a picture of hime. Post your e-mail and I will send it to you. We have Bronco Fans everywhere….Awesome, Martin
stormontheplains:
Hall injured his hamstring last Friday morning and did not take part in either the Friday afternoon or Saturday morning practice session, and, of course, sat out Monday night.
And to the other thoughts:
… If a helmet flies off during a game, I automatically assume it to be Nate’s. I am shocked when it’s anyone else …
… Mr. Bowlen loves the islands. I can’t blame him; I do, too. If I could, I’d wear Aloha shirts every day.
