Another Big Step Toward the Field

October 9th, 2008 - 1:18pm by Ryan Torain

Another big step this week, everybody. First it was being able to get back to working on my conditioning. Then it was being able to lift weights with my left arm again. Now, it’s something even bigger.

I was at practice yesterday. My first NFL practice, and being a rookie, it felt good, even if I was just watching it go down and not participating yet. I missed practice. It’s been a while since I’ve been in that atmosphere. Watching guys make plays, guys working hard and just playing the game. I just missed that competitiveness. I’m definitely excited to get back, and it’s been great to be back out at practice. Now I’m just kind of taking steps to get back in the flow of things, and hopefully next week I’ll be able to put the cleats on and run around.

Coach Shanahan said there’s a chance I’ll be back out on the practice field making plays on my own starting next week, so I’ve just got to stay working hard with rehab and keep conditioning to make sure it happens. Whenever I get called on, I’ll be ready to go. I can’t wait to get back.

Usually you think the main thing I would miss is being on the field on Sundays, but at this point I miss practice just as much. Practice is a huge key to the game — if you do well in practice, you’ll do well in the game. If you don’t do well in practice, you probably ain’t going to even be playing in the game. So I always look forward to having a great practice every day, and I’m ready to start that trend up again next week.

I don’t have any plans to play in the game next week, just hopefully I’ll be back on the practice field. I’ve got to get my football conditioning up. You can condition all you want, run black lines and gassers all day, but conditioning for the game of football is a different kind of conditioning. Luckily the trainers and strength staff are doing what they can to make sure I’m in tip-top shape and I’ll be ready.

I told you all a couple weeks ago that I was itching to get back on the field. Right now it’s even worse. I’m fiending. I’m really excited. Especially since it’s coming up real soon. I can’t wait to put on that uniform and make some plays. And believe me, I will make some plays.

Thanks for everybody’s encouragement as I’ve been getting back toward the field. Speaking of which, I saw that my grandma wrote a comment to me in last week’s blog. She’s always trying to keep in contact one way or the other.

Grammies: Hopefully I’ll be back next week, and hopefully y’all get to come out to the game when I get back. I can’t wait to see you. Miss you.

As for the rest of you: Thanks for your support. I know it’s been tough while I’ve been out of the game, rehabbing, but I appreciate you all sticking with me. Now that I’m hopefully getting back out to practice, I’ll hopefully be able to reward you all with my performance on the field soon.

All right, keep reading, and maybe this time next week I’ll be telling you about my first week of regular season practice in the NFL.

  10. Bronco*n*kansas says:

Man, you must be just a buzz inside! I can tell in your typing that you are super excited.

I can imagine you not being at practice. Guys that live for practice and love their game will do anything to convince coach to let them do something. Well, now you have the chance to get it on! I love your comment…

“Usually you think the main thing I would miss is being on the field on Sundays, but at this point I miss practice just as much. Practice is a huge key to the game — if you do well in practice, you’ll do well in the game.”

That tells me you are into the game and what it takes to win. I remember when we(my brothers and I)coached Little League baseball, After the draft in our town the usual ritual was to get together and hand out uniforms and then figure out who could play what position. Then wait for the games. Well, we were brought up in Denver as kids and from the time I could throw a ball, we practiced and practiced. So when I got my chance to coach we got our team together and then we practiced. And Practiced. We practiced 25 times before our first game. One parent asked why we practiced so much, We told her, “This is just like a game to us, only we don’t keep score. This way we get to play so much more. But more than that, the kids are learning and loving their sport.” I told our kids parents, ” you want to see how well your child can play the game, Come watch practice. that is where they shine and can really show what they can do.”

Well, that year, we started off down in the third inning by 7 runs. One of the kids come up to my brother and asked what we were going to do when we lost. Well, my brother told him, “we are not going to lose, we just got to change a couple things. That is why we practiced, so we could learn all we needed to know.” So at the 4th inning we had every kid that came up Bunt the ball, six kids in a row go one base before the other team got it figured out how to defend it. We ended up winning 15 games in a row that year and going to the state little league tournament.

Our Team motto that year was “Practice, have fun, and hold your head high no matter what!” Those kids were all in the 13,14, and 15 year range. We had kids that some school teachers had told us were no good and not worth bothering with. Well, every one of those kids finished the season and two of the bad, not worth bothering with kids went on to get scholarships, one in football and the other in baseball. And it basically had to do with giving them a chance and letting them find their love for the game In Practice.

So I am excited for you that you get to practice. SO remember, Straight ahead, at full speed and if you have to take time to stutter step or juke a backer out of their supporter, that is ok too.

Great news, can’t wait for your “debut.” Lets get the train on the track!

  12. imready says:

Glad to here you are close to punishing opposing defenses. We are all excited to see you run the rock!

  13. tedresticle says:

i only got one thing to say… when you get back to totin that rock again and you get your first NFL touchdown, i want to see the mile high salute come out of retirement!!

  14. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Technically, Michael Pittman does the salute right now, but the more, the merrier. The Broncos will defeat the Jaguars and hopefully Eddie Royal can suit up because he makes us all the more dangerous. What will the Berman nickname be for you, Ryan, the Broncos’ “All Torrain” vehicle?

  15. lomaxgr says:

Great news Ryan! It really is refreshing to see a professional athlete so passionate about his sport, and I get the feeling I speak for everyone when I say I can’t wait to see you on the field. I get the feeling you and Selvin are going to be the Marion Barber and Felix Jones or the Turner and Norwood combination for many years in Denver.

  16. Broncfalls says:

RYAN!!!!!!!!! BRING BACK THE SALUTE!!!!!!!!!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! BRING BACK THE SALUTE

    WHY IS IT GONE????

Good to hear you’re almost here. Oh and please show Ronnie Brown how to run what a joke :)

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  17. j dub says:

THANK YOU BRONCFALLS AND THANK YOU RYAN IN ADVANCE FOR BRINGING BACK THE MILE HIGH SALUTE!!!

  18. sivocb24 says:

I can’t wait to watch you tear it up !

  19. Denwu says:

I have to take some credit for the mile high salute returning…. I’ve been telling the players to bring it back, and i know it raised discussion because no one was talking about it.

    Ryan,

Is Shanahan really going to do the first 4 RB Platoon in the NFL? Because you know Pittman and Young are getting their carries, but you and Andre hall will get chances but fewer. Do you think that he gives all four of you equal time? The whole world is curious to see how you do when you chance comes. BE READY…

  20. BAADLADY says:

The Train … is quickly approaching the tracks … GIVE IT TO THE TRAIN …AND YOU WILL BE REWARDED … GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

    Were all pulling for you!

    What up!

Can’t wait to see you in action! Did you get a chance to get the film from 96-98 of the Broncos? When you condition do you run with weights dragging behind you yet? The steps in Santa Monica are famous from all kinds of athletes in particular Curtis Martin and he had one of the longest careers as a every down RB. Have you found your Steps or Mountain you climb? I ran the Santa Monica steps and man I can see why he was so strong in the 4th quarter! Good Luck with everything! I do clubs out here in LA and got the pleasure of hosting AL Wilson (Former Broncos LB) and he said something I thought I would share with you. He asked me if I drive aggressive? I was like matter of fact I do and don’t use my blinkers unless there is a cop around. He then asked me if I have ever been the driver in an accident? I haven’t so I said no. He said that is the way it is in football. People worried about getting hurt hesitate and get hurt…people who focus on punishing the person you go against don’t usually have the big injuries cause they are focused and don’t hesitate. I’m not explaining it as well as he did but the moral to the story is do the punishing and you will most likely be the one jumping back up on your feet. God Bless!

    Hey Ryan,
I got to meet you this past Tuesday Oct. 7 at the blood drive, and I was so impressed with the way you handle yourself and the positive attitude you displayed. You took time out and took a picture with me when you didn’t have to and I appreciate that so much. I know that with your positive attitude you are going to be back stronger than ever and I personally can’t WAIT to see what you can do on the field. Thanks for the pic, you’re awesome! Good luck and God bless.

Everybody gotta “Get on Board”…The Torain Train’s back on it’s tracks.

    Questions for RT;

You have said you’re aerobically in shape, but how long do you think you’ll need before your ready to strap in on and start taking the rock?

How’s Alridge doing? Nobody ever mentions him anymore. I’d love to see what he could bring in both the return game, and as a “factor back”, much like Reggie Bush in New Orleans.

  26. SuperBowl_32 says:

    Hey Ryan,

Just want to wish you the best with the rehab and getting back into the practice routine.

Hope to see you back on the field real soon – we need to get that ground game going again to take some of the pressure off of Jay and the receivers.

I know we have the bye week this week – any chance we get to see you the following week against Miami? Or the following week against Cleveland?
