The key part of Shanahan's comments regarding the knee was when he said "he's been off of it for a few weeks and it hasn't gotten much better." Having the procedure now gives him a shot to play the last six or seven games of the season, I'd surmise. It's like with John Lynch missing the Colts game in order to avoid aggravating the injury and missing more time ... better to go in and give yourself a chance of being ready to go in a few weeks rather than just lingering in "wait-and-see" mode.
