After Suspension, Broncos Release Peterson

October 8th, 2007 - 6:07pm by Andrew

The Broncos had to make a decision on defensive end Kenny Peterson by Monday, and even though there will be two roster spots opening after Tom Nalen and Nate Jackson head to injured reserve with their season-ending biceps and groin tears, the Broncos nonetheless chose to release Peterson.

He’d recently completed a four-game suspension for violation of the league’s steroid policy after going through all of training camp and the preseason.

Peterson practiced with the team last week, as is permitted for players coming off suspensions, in effect giving the team an extra week to determine whether the player is brought back to the 53-man roster.

Jackson and Nalen have not yet been officially placed on injured reserve, meaning that the Broncos’ roster still stands at 53 players.

    Mr. Mason,

Thank you for the update. After reading your posting regarding Coach Shanahan’s Monday press conference I went back to the video and watched it a couple of times. Some of the questions asked and the way Coach Shanahan answered them got me wondering about the protocol of the press corp when their in there. Is there a certain degree of pointedness that you can use when asking the Coach questions and if so where is the line? Also if the line is crossed by a reporter who keeps asking a question that he or she feels is not being answered to their degree of satisfaction, what are the consequences. Are they not allowed to cover the Monday press conference anymore or can they be banned from the team facilities entirely? The reason I ask is that I can’t believe that Coach Shanahan honestly thinks that all of the answers he’s giving to the press corp even come close to reality of what he’s seen on the field and from the coaching staff. I know that the Broncos have always been an “In House” team when it comes to their problems but it felt on Monday as if their were a great many questions that were going unasked simply because those reporting felt uneasy about asking them. I also know that it would be like kicking a man when he’s down to do so but ultimately he is the head coach so there really isn’t anyone to ask. If there is a coach in the NFL that seems to be caused real pain by the mincing of words then it is Mike Shanahan. Although I’ve never met him he seems to be one of those people that’s going to hit you with the truth no matter what the after effects are. The reason I ask is that of all the answers he gave today the one that concerns me most is his saying that the team just needs to work on little things and that no major changes were going to be made. I know he couldn’t possibly have outlined his entire two week itinerary for us but some acknowledgement that there are some major concerns necessitating major changes would have been nice.
In my work if I’m instructing an individual in firearms use and they continue to miss the target because they keep flinching when it goes off I consider this a little thing that can be fixed by addressing the little things but if I’m doing the same thing and every time that my student touches the trigger the firearm explodes I think that constitutes a major concern that’s only going to be solved by an equivalent response. Some of the problems the Broncos are facing are not about little things. Some of them are exploding right in their face no matter how many things they try to do differently nor how many times they pull the trigger.
Finally I’ve listened for the last few days to all the people that want Coach Bates run out of town on a rail but ultimately I don’t think a lot of these people understand the full dynamics of his 4-3 scheme. I know that I don’t. Is there anyone that you could interview (I say anyone because I didn’t think Jim Bates would do it) that could give us a more detailed idea of what his system entails. It would sure help to know if this LB was in fact out of position or if this D-lineman was in fact not meeting his responsibility.
    Thank you.

    Mike in San Diego

What is the update on the new LB we signed a few weeks ago? I haven’t heard anything.

  3. LetPlummerPlay says:

You guys want proof that Shanahan is insane: Last year the team was 7-3 headed straight for the playoffs and if week 11 hadn’t been a short week due to Thanksgiving, Shanahan benches the starting QB and lets a rookie take the team straight to nowhere.
Well, Shanahan said, MAJOR CHANGES needed to be made. This year the team sits and 2-3, going to be 2-4 soon, headed nowhere and he says NO MAJOR CHANGES are needed. The Broncos just received their worst home beating since 1966, I mean Wade Phillips couldn’t coach them into such a bad loss, but Shanahan did and he says, “NO MAJOR CHANGES ARE NEEDED.”

I know deep down, even Mason disagrees with that one!

  4. hrdnokd says:

LPP I don’t agree with a lot of what you say, but MAJOR changes are needed and it may need to start at the top. The play calling inside the 20 is a joke. We go into shotgun and take away half of our options. The defense is unbearable to watch, you can just see they don’t know what they should be doing. Lynch is the big hitter but we have him playing deep safety, WHAT?

  5. Anonymous says:

With Nalen sidelined I bet the Broncos are wishing they had drafted Ryan Kalil instead of Tim Crowder in the 2nd round. Also having Tank Tyler AND Marcus Thomas would have been nice right about now.

  6. Anonymous says:

Also Rufus Alexander is a UFA right now…might not be a bad idea to give him a try-out.

  7. DBJL6987@MSN.COM says:

ALL I GOTTA SAY IS YALL SUCK BOOTY MAN..THE ONLY REASON WHY I MADE THIS ACCOUNT ON THE DENVER WEBSITE WAS TO TELL YALL THAT..IM A DIEHARD FAN AND WHEN I SAW THAT ***WHOOPING YALL TOOK I WAS ASHAMED TO CALL MYSELF A BRONCO FAN!! ALL OF YALL GAVE UP AND THERE WAS NO RAESON FOR BRANDON TO SAY WHY THE FANS LEFT..BECAUSE YALL DID GIVE UP AND THERE IS NO REASON OR EXCUSE FOR THAT..I BELIEVE IN MIKE SHANNAHAN AND I HOPE HE MAKES YALL WORK SO HARD SO YALL CAN REALIZE WHAT A BUNCH OF HOES YALL LOOKED LIKE ON SUNDAY VS. THE CHARGERS..I STILL BELIEVE IN THE TEAM BUT IF YALL LACK HEART THE NEXT TIME YALL PLAY, NO ONE IS GONNA BELIEVE IN YALL AND ESPN IS GOING TO TALK MORE **** THAN THEY CAN **** OUT THERE ***ES!!

  8. kevannes says:

Tough to follow, that. One more time, DBJ, but with FEELING!! But I agree that perhaps Brandon should wait to gripe on the fans until a game where he has put some points on the board, rather than fumble away a drive. I DO think though that he is something special and will garner some serious trade value this off season. If I’d been at the game (3000 miles), I like to think I’d stuck it out to the stomach curling end, and I think the players feel the disgust in the stands without boosbut when you stink it out like that, you gotta expect some folks will express themselves. Yup, Bronco fans are spoiled, but I hope we don’t become the Dodger fans of the NFL, golf clapping and sipping expresso before slipping out in the third quarter before the cyber cafes get crowded. Heaven forbid. Oh and if any of you just can’t take the pain of watching the team rebuild, send me your season tickets and I’ll fly down there and suffer in your stead. I promise to stand and yell until the final buzzer, support the concessionaires, and gawk at the cheerleaders. Thanks for thinkin’ of me…

  9. Dekreybroncofan says:

    Andrew,
Is there truth to what Broco hyde is saying/did I miss somthing? We signed a new LB? I really want everyone to be positive this week, and hope people remain that way unless we loose against Pitsburg… If we beat the Pit this will show that Mike, and company are doing the right thing. If not maybe it is time to start talking about some kind change… Maybe Marty as GM (wow that would be cool), but never will I say Mike needs to leave! Mike as far as I am concerned you are welcome as long as you like, but Bates well Im not so sure about… I am sure once he is gone he wont be missed, unless he gets his stuff together enough to pull us arround. Say a playoff apearnce and maybe giving our Off a chance when we play high scoring team like NE, or IND (thats once again in the playoffs).

  10. rmgeiger says:

I’m glad the Broncos went out this offseason and spent all their money on a drug-addicted 28 year old with nine illegitimate children. Awesome!! It’s good to see that money going to support Henry’s marijuana addiction and not supporting a defensive lineman or two!!!

  11. spikerman says:

Regarding the press conferences, has the team considered putting a micorophone out with the press corps so that people watching can hear the question being asked? Probably not a big deal, but I think it would help with the pressers.

  12. dbroncfan says:

Andrew, does anyone know if Henry gets suspended will he lose any of his salary, will that come back to us in our cap, and if we release him will that open up any salary cap for us or do we still have to eat that, because I am sure that in a couple of weeks, either Goodell will suspend him or he will lose his court case and we will be looking at Young to step up.

  13. LetPlummerPlay says:

Don’t RAPP us on the knuckles for making the same point twice Mason, but even ESPN agrees with us.

    From ESPN:
“In other football news, Denver is joining the competition to see who will be the year’s train-wreck team. Here are the Denver possession results against San Diego, a game played in Colorado, where the altitude strongly favors the Broncos: Punt, fumble, fumble, punt, field goal, interception, punt, downs, downs, downs. Last season, the Broncos were 7-4 and had an inside track to the playoffs before Mike “The Ultimate Leader” Shanahan decided to bench Jake Plummer. Since then, Denver is 4-6 — and 2-4 at home where, owing to Denver’s altitude, the Broncos have the best overall home record in the past decade.”

Someday Mason will proclaim “I’m sorry, you guys were right, benching Plummer sent the Broncos into a 3 year tail spin of disaster!”

And we’ll post his picture with a LET PLUMMER PLAY T-shirt at our site!

Bronco T: Are you blind? Read the comments for the last 5 posts from Mason. You will see that not only do we GET THE MOST responses, we now have several responses from various Broncos fans agreeing with us.

I’m not sure how you have missed this.

P.S. Maybe you haven’t noticed that even MASON himself has responded to us several times.

  16. broncoboy82 says:

lpp i would like to see something differant (sorry cant spell to very good)from you now. plummer was great when he first got to denver. i can say this for my self i love watching him play, but he lost it you could see it in his eyes . so that is that let it (r.i.p) . so if you were the coach what would you do to fix the problems the broncos have other than the QB

  17. archangel77 says:

Regarding Plummer: It’s academic! It doesn’t matter! And the argument makes no sense! Plummer will not play here again! He will most likely never play in the NFL again. At best he’s waiting for two things. A team like Atlanta to self destruct in the QB department then he’ll wait for time to expire on any of the clauses that could force action by the Broncos if he plays for another team. Even if he does come back you’ll see the same thing you saw in Arizona and in Denver. A QB that needs to be protected at every point of the game. He can’t read through his progressions, can’t read defenses worth a damn, and openly admits to being so unfocused during the game that he continually forgets the snap count of the play he just called while walking from the huddle to the line of scrimmage! LPP, what ever fantasy you have of Plummer riding into Mile Hi at Invesco on a white steed and saving the Broncos should be filed in your mind under pipe dreams and bed wetting and not mentioned again. It serves no purpose. If you have an idea as to how to work with what Denver has on it’s roster then lets hear it. Other than that your shtick is getting old. Move on. In ten years when Cutler is being compared to Manning, Elway, and Farve we’ll pitch in and get you pick-me-up-bouquet and your own #6 aluminum balloon.

    Mike in San Diego

  18. mmorg17 says:

LPP, let it go already…you have nothing positive to bring, find something in your life that makes you happy, please…Plummer sucked last year for whatever reason, and directly led to our defense wearing down near the end of the season. I, not we, believe you will be happier, as will other Bronco haters, once you leave this. Bad mojo from you and aforementioned others are making this board stink…face it the Broncos are not good right now, but this is the NFL, which stands for Not For Long as Glanville reminded us, so suck it up Bronco fans and realize greener pastures are ahead…

  19. broncotony says:

I say if they are going to lose like this start the kids on the defensive line, move d.j. to his old position, keep webster playing, bench gold. May i start the campaign for next years free agent pick up of lance briggs!!!!

  20. MattR says:

broncotony - a few more games like these and the young guys will definitely get a chance. But I’d like to see what we can do against Pittsburgh and Green Bay first. With the way this division has started, there is no point in selling out the season yet. I still have faith. The Chargers game was like the Perfect Storm of everything possible going wrong. I don’t think it is possible for that team to perform worse. And at least we have the bye week to try and correct some things and to evaluate how to best fill the hole caused by Nalens’s injury. It seems like it would be a real benefit to both sides of the ball to practice red zone drills for the next 10 days. The offense needs to learn how to pound the ball into the end zone when they get close and the defense needs to learn how to prevent teams from running down their throat.

  21. YosemiteSam says:

Here’s what I want to see during the bye week: a player’s only meeting called by the players and for the players. The problem is not the schemes. It’s not the play calling. It’s not the talent. It’s the attitude. It seems to me that the team, both sides of the ball but certainly more evident on defense, is playing in a confused state of mind. That translates to less than 100% effort because you aren’t really sure what you are supposed to do. You lack focus. We don’t have any true emotional leaders left on this team. I haven’t seen a single player screaming at his teammates on the sidelines over a missed assignment/tackle/fumble/etc.

Someone has to stand up and say enough. Someone has to say that this level of play is not only unsatisfactory, but that it won’t be tolerated. I’ll take a 100% effort from Foxworth over a 50% effort from Bly. Us fans will know if the players have decided to butt heads over this by hearing about a players only meeting. Without that, everything else is just more icing on a #$@% cake.

With our D-Line leaking runners, like the proverbial dutchboy with his finger trying to plug holes in the dike, how can we let Peterson go? Does this make sense to anyone? Is he Lawrence Taylor? NO! Is the Derrick Thomas? NO! But is he at least as good as what we got???? Hmmmm….I think YES! At this point, hasn’t our fascination with drug/steriod users become more of a norm than the exception. I say, let him suit up! Let him play! What do we have to lose at this point????

Oh, by the way, MISS T@ earthlink….please just SHUT UP! You sound like a politician stumping for votes for re-election. You may read what you write and think yourself to be “well informed”. But trust me, with every word you speak, you demonstrate that you know more about cheerleading than football. Take a seat MISS! Oh yeah…”Power to the People”…and “Flower Power”…

  25. mkp2477 says:

I dunno, we have talent all over da field but i think were using it wrong. hrdnokd said it best, our play calling, especially in da red zone is pathetic at best. And there was this genius, i forget his name, after da colts debacle who informed us how we were playing against manning all wrong. we have the highest paid corner tandem in da league and we play 7-8 yards off da rcvrs letting people pick us apart. Look at da Pats, their not as athletic as we are but they always seem to be in da right positions… I dont think its our personnel, its da so called geniuses at da controls…

Hey. I just want to say I think Shanahan should stay. As for Henry, it would be unfortunate to see him go given his numbers but damn, don’t you have to draw the line somewhere!!!
