A Sour Taste

September 15th, 2011 - 10:10am by Willis McGahee

First let me just say the atmosphere at the stadium was crazy Monday night. I’ve never heard a crowd so loud in my life, and I’ve played in a lot of stadiums. It shows how much the people are behind the Broncos out here.

I enjoyed the pregame a lot. It was a great tribute to all the people who lost their lives in 9/11, and it was great that the whole NFL participated.

As far as the game, we basically hurt ourselves with all the penalties, and the offense not starting fast to help the defense out when they were playing good in the first half. We can’t do stuff like that. We’ve got to get it from the beginning and go from there.

I do think the team came together very well. We didn’t back down or give up on each other. When we were down 16-3, we stayed in it and we fought. That’s a good thing about our team — we didn’t give up.

Looking at next week, right now basically we have a sour taste in our mouths, and we’re trying to put something sweet in our mouths right now. The thing about it is we’ve got to be mentally prepared for this team, because they’re going to try and come in and do the same thing Oakland did against us. We can’t let that happen.

The Bengals get paid just like us. They’re there to make plays. They’re in the NFL for a reason. Those guys are going to try to mess up every play that we put out there, but our job is to not let them do that.

Nobody is happy about starting the season with that loss. But we’re going to be OK. I’m not worried about it. First game of the season, everybody likes to have that win in their first game, but unfortunately things didn’t go our way. The good thing about it is we’ve got 15 more games.

Catch up with you next week.

Just a reminder, Raiders had 15 penalties for 131 yards, and we only had like 10 for some 80 yards, just saying, excuses are plenty but bottom line is we were the worse team, by far.

  2. strandoftds says:

The raiders just being themselves is all, bad blood.

  3. baylinorcrush says:

Actually we had 10 penalties for 91 yards, same point though, 40 yards less than they did.

  4. stevecan2 says:

I was interested in hearing Bruschi smash Ochocinco for tweeting about how amazing it is to see Brady do his thing. Same deal applies on all teams I think.

No way does EFX give up draft picks. The whole win now, is a smoke screen to keep people excited. Fail: if you can’t deliver what you promise. Or win that game Monday night…. Long time coming before i can drop it. Astronomical loss. Stop with the smoke screens EFX. It will only add salt to the wound…

I give players like McGahee a pass on the one game comments, because honestly, that is all the leadership, FO, players a like keep on saying.

  5. strandoftds says:

We still have many holes to fill just as you`ve stated Bay, the true hurts, ouch.

  6. alexanserg says:

Fox needs to show that he has a set. Enough with the veteran thing. In his 6 years all Orton has shown is that he is an excellent backup.

It is time to see what the youngins can do.

  7. alexanserg says:

If we start of 1-4 or so, and Orton is still starting, I will officially be calling for Fox’s head.

At that time I will need Bowlen’s address so I can send him 2-3 letter per week about it.

  8. killerkod says:

alex: it’s an expression meaning I agree with what he said…..are you the grammer police or something?

How many times have I read, we only lost by 3 points…..

With the gifts the Raiders gave us, we should’ve never been down by 3 or lose by three for that matter. We only lost by 3 points is an excuse and a feable attempt to mask the fact that the entire team STUNK IT UP>

  9. alexanserg says:

Killerkod: Not sure, but that is my whole point.

In reality both teams made mistakes. I refuse to start playing the whole “how bad would it have been if we were playing a better team?” Or “how bad would they have beaten us if they hadn’t gotten all those penalties?”

The simple fact is that we played a full regular season game and only lost by 3. Them’s the facts. Everything else is just hypothetical.

  10. DenverOranges says:

whens the last time Orton took us to over time?

  11. shaztah says:

Mr. Magahee, I ended up watching the game on Tuesday because I had to go to my 13.00 and hour job to try and take care of my family. I have a bachelor’s degree and no jobs available for me to better myself. I agree with the post that you guys make too much money from the fans not to show heart out there. I saw Mr. Lloyd more than once say “I DON’T CARE to Kyle”. That was the beauty of pause I could read his lips. When Kyle was on the sideline YELLING at the other players instead of encouraging them or saying okay guys the last one was on me and showing just a LITTLE bit of fire for the game he decided to yell and blame the whole team. I still think that Orton and Lloyd have a pact to rack up as many personal stats as they can and if the team wins ok but if not who cares our numbers are good. I just know that there are players out there who play for the love of the game and are full of fire and zest and I watched the entire game Monday at almost slow motion and I saw no FIRE, no ENTHUSIASM, and a dead robot Orton.

  12. DenverOranges says:

@ Bay How many OT wins has Orton had with the Broncos?

  13. alexanserg says:

If Aye were the grammar police, I wood bee under investigation buy internal affairs.

  14. alexanserg says:

    @shaztah /agree 100%

  15. alexanserg says:

I am so sick of orton, I would almost be willing to see cutler come back. Almost.

  16. 1nOnlyTRB says:

If Blloyd didn’t have that lucky unbelievable fumble returned to him, game coulda been worse. And Moreno fumbled true but so did many others on our team including Orton, lloyd, mcgahee and im sure others im forgetting. Lets face it, Since Moreno has been on our team we have been in a hopeless run scheme. Not his fault … the only thing I will agree about him is that he gets hurt (hamstring: common injury) but I u trying to tell me McGahee doesn’t know how to run the ball either? that his many years of success all of a sudden dissapeared when he came to denver … or maybe … just maybe its deeper than “Moreno sucks” … The guys may never live up to his selection “12th overall” but that doesn’t mean he sucks. Theres just no running game in Denver and thats the scheme, the blocking, the everything. I guess Kyle Orton is a better RB than Moreno and McGahee because i believe he had the most running yards on monday … he had a couple of games like that last year too where he was the top runner. The problem goes deeper than Moreno sucks is all im saying.

McGahee you might get more touches this weekened due to Moreno Hamstring … hope u make em count man. I know you can pound it when given some blocking. Best of luck in your first year.

    Broncos win 17 -13

  17. DenverOranges says:

I would take Cutler in a heart beat

  18. alexanserg says:

I honestly believe quinn, tebow, or weber would be able to do a lot more when it comes to firing up the whole team and playing with a little passion.

  19. brian_schneider says:

I while back I mentioned that McGahee could be fighting for the Moreno’s starting role…maybe if he does and Moreno remains fragile, McGahee will be our #1 HB.

  20. alexanserg says:

Cutler has the arm strength. But his diabetic as is heartless and careless. While Orton throws it away, Cutler throws it into triple coverage.

They both lose, and then after the game they both say,”well, you know, uh, the whole offense could have been better. It was only one game. It’s no big deal.”

Cutler is just as bad as Orton. A little more physically talented, but a little stupider too.

  21. strandoftds says:

TRB, Moreno fumbles and dances to much. When the O-line starts jelling better, maybe Moreno stops dancing, maybe. And like we`ve said he gets hurt to ofton.

  22. DenverOranges says:

He seems to be doing ok in Chicago

  23. alexanserg says:

With any luck we will see enough injuries to our RBs to see JJ moved up from the practice squad. It looked to me like he had way more burst than Moreno. A fast guy will downhill tendencies.

  24. alexanserg says:

Orton did pretty good in chicago too. It’s easy when you have Urlacher and the rest of the Bears’ defense.

  25. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Nice post Shaztah … Bachelors and no real job is pretty tough … similar boat. And I didn’t see the thing about lloyd saying I don’t care … nice eye. He shouldn’t have been chewing out … he should have been motivating and accepting responsibility as the feild general. But some people have diff ways of being “leaders” … the chew out way was the McD style and apparently the Orton style, Fox on the other hand doesn’t chew out … nor does Tebow. Don’t break em down, give em more reason to wanna follow you, and support you and do everything in thier power to win. For all we know the oline started letting get crushed after all the chewing out … lol J/K … and I never thought about the pact between Orton and Lloyd …. funny stuff. They have however known each other since Chi town. TRB

  26. DenverOranges says:

True But the O line that Cutler has is way worse then what Orton ever had to deal with. I’m not a fan of Cutlers he’s just the lesser evil in this

  27. alexanserg says:

Cutler is way more mobile. But what is the difference between an extra 10 sacks vs an extra 10 int?

Either way you have a petulant QB that fails in the clutch and doesn’t really care afterward.

  28. 1nOnlyTRB says:

stradn, My point was MNF … every bronco was fumbling. For watever reason. And not just Moreno but McGahee also could not get yards. The problem runs deeper is my point thats all. I personally think Moreno will never be good enough here in denver because of the way he started off in a crappy scheme and the dislike of the person who draft him when we coulda used defense and already had Hillis. All im saying. TRB

  29. bfree2bronc says:

Bad timed penalties, missed opportunities on offense with underthrown/overthrown passes, OLine out played, fumbles and so on…

Defense played to keep the ballgame close by lost focus on gap assignments. That’s got to change or we’ll see Cedric Benson doing the same thing McFadden did.

I hope we don’t have the same officiating crew. Dumervil and Miller spent most of the night in a head lock and no call…

  30. baylinorcrush says:

Is that a trick question? LOL.

shaztah, thank you so much for your personal insight into the game specially the Lloyd thing. I have been a bit taken back by Lloyd this year starting when he was complimenting Tebow over and over when he thought he would become the starter only to drop him like a hot potatoe when he found out Orton was gonna be the man and then starting to lick Orton’s boots and going as far as saying he is sick and tired hearing about Tebow. I mean that is some seriously troubling personality problems there.

And remember Fox and Lloyd go way back in Chicago, so I am starting to see them with the attitude that it’s us against the world and I’m afraid that will only worsen the performance of the team.

Very troubling tandem indeed, at least Lloyd is spiderman, I don’t know what Orton is though….

  31. DenverOranges says:

We were a few Defensive pickups away from being contenders and now were about 5 years away. Anyway you slice the Orton or cutler debate it ends with Denver getting shat on

  32. strandoftds says:

This is Moreno`s last stand for the Broncos this year. If he`s average he`ll either be traded or cut. He must perform this year and thats it.

  33. alexanserg says:

My number one complaint about Moreno is he has a tendency to trip over his own team-mates in short yardage situations. For whatever reason, Moreno’s first move is to spread his knees as far as he can. As a result he frequently trips over his own team.

If you don’t know what I am talking about, re-watch some film. You will see.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

TRB, you already posted a 20-16 win the other day, haha, your memory is selective or something… actually it’s not very good, LOL.

  35. seweatherman1 says:

Lloyd is Orton’s go to guy, that was evident and discussed in length by the announcers. Well, if I am not mistaken, Lloyd is on the injury list for this week, correct? If so, I wonder what Orton’s game plan will be.

2nd. Guys (& gals), let’s can the “we only lost by 3 point stuff. #1 it is getting really old, and #2 we lost…PERIOD. Might as well been by 50 points. We lost!

  36. strandoftds says:

Alex, there`s truth in what you are saying. I sometimes wonder if Moreno has poor eye site.

  37. stevecan2 says:

Orton is a moth caught in a spiders web

  38. strandoftds says:

    LOL

  39. HardHitting27 says:

I am curious if there is anyway to pull up last years blogs and compare them to this years?

The themes and posts are almost 100% identical:
    1. QB issues with Orton not being a gamer, leader or able to finish
    2. NoShow Moreno not being able to run and injury prone.
    3. Head Coach not making the calls to make the right changes to better the team(and already some grumbling for his head). (The OC should be thrown under the bus here too).
    4. Defense is holding it’s own but can’t stand up when on the field so long due to inept offense.

The other thing is that EFX mentioned that this season and next will be rebuilding years or building years to build a team for the future. Then just after the draft or the lockout ended (not sure when), their tune changes to Win with what we’ve got and our QB (Orton) gives us the best chance to win? To much wishy washy comments nothing seems focused on the front office side either.

  40. royalbroncofan1 says:

Well he can’t be Daredevil.. no way… can’t sense anything.
The Mighty Thor…ummm that would be Clay Matthews….lol!
The Incredible Hulk….. closer to Tim Tebows physique….
Ironman….. no way…. Ironman collects awesome sports cars.. not into Prius. LOL!

  41. strandoftds says:

I`ll give HC John Fox a few years before I make an assessment.

  42. stevecan2 says:

there still there, just google what your looking for.

i just did blogs.denverbroncos.com/denverbroncos april 2010 and a blog showed up. you can also search by handle

  43. strandoftds says:

Hardhitting27, I agree with you to a point. Remember, we are fans voicing our displeaure about our teams weaknesses and what not. Just venting and voicing our opinions. Freedom of blog speech. LOL

OC wants Tebow to start, that’s a no brainer, and UK wants to trade Orton and they are now both gone, so we can’t even argue with them, bummer, LOL.

first QB related post I saw, everyting else was about Clady and our WR’s

  45. killerkod says:

on a lighter note about the MNF game……on NFL countdown, it was hilarious to see the awkwardness when Stu sent it back to the studio to Coach Parcells, when it was Coach Ditka. I’m sure Ditka tore a strip out of him on that one. LOL

  46. stevecan2 says:

The Orton/ Tebow drama is a long time occurrence. That was what? 1 week after the draft in 2010?

  47. shaztah says:

Thanks Bay and Alex, like I have said I am new to football so I am learning but I was curious to see what made the “Team” vote Orton as capitain and as I watched the game (all 5 1/2 hours) at slow motion I never saw Orton get upset or angry (except when he was chewing out the line). I never even seen him smile or chest bump when the they scored. The only smile I saw was when he was talking to Lloyd. I also noticed coach Fox’s face. He kinda just stared in disbelief. He showed little emotion either. I don’t know a whole lot about the technical stuff but I know if it was Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers out there they would have willed the team to win. They have a fire and passion that motivates their team mates. I guess I just don’t understand the team’s choices. I do know that I have watched each of the last 3 games last year at least 3 times and I saw a fire in the offense and in the defense because when Tebow led them he showed them that he will go the extra mile to help the team. Did anyone else notice that on the sidelines all the quarterbacks stayed away from each other? There was a couple times when they grouped together but for the most part they ignored each other. I saw Tim’s face when Orton was chewing out the line, it must have been so hard for him not to say anything. I don’t think I have ever seen him look like that. Sorry to ramble…..

  48. eternalorangeandblue says:

the zero fan support for orton is not gonna help motivate him to care about this team. sooner or later he’s just gonna lay down

  49. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Hey Bay I remembered I posted a score but i couldn’t rememeber what it was … I thought it was what I posted in this blog …. so rather than ask the annoying question “did you get my figured” I figured I would just say it again and you would just say, “yea you already said it i got it” but I said the wrong thing lol. So no, my memory is fine, tis selective at times sure, but I remember giving a prediction. TRB
