Season’s over and the year’s over also.
It’s been an eventful year for us. Ups and downs and a lot of challenges. We obviously didn’t get to where we were expected to go. Didn’t fulfill all of our goals and maximize our talent this year. I think this is a time right now right after the season to reflect on our own individual performances and performance as a team.
That being said, I personally recognize that there’s things that I need to work on going into next season. It’s important to be really critical of yourselves right now when things haven’t gone well.
On a positive note, we won our last game against a very good team who was really one of the top running teams in the league — the top running team — and we were able to answer the call and control their running attack and for the most part control their passing attack and play solid defense and our offense scored enough points to win.
Unfortunately it had to go into overtime, but it’s kind of been the theme of our season. Nothing has been easy for us this year. This win is also a little frustrating because like a lot of our other wins, we played really well. We played really well against some playoff teams and some really good teams, which makes it really frustrating to look back on the games that we lost to teams that aren’t playoff teams and the games that we gave away and those sorts of things.
It’s really tough to look back on, but you can’t look back because you can’t change the past. This is a time to be critical of yourselves and focus on what you need to get better on. This is going to be a difficult next couple of weeks I’m sure, or a difficult offseason, because whenever things don’t go well, there’s always a lot of changes made or at least some changes made. We have some faces that won’t be around here next year because there always are some people that are gone. Hopefully I’m one of the faces that’s still here, but you never know.
Tonight is New Year’s, which is the anniversary of when Darrent got killed, so that’ll be difficult for me to deal with. I think I’ll take a trip over to the Boys & Girls Club and hang out with them at some point today and tomorrow. I hope everybody learned from last year and is extra safe and careful in whatever way they try to celebrate the New Year.
I’m disappointed we didn’t make the playoffs but I’m excited about this offseason. Get a chance to get away and enjoy myself and friends and family as much as possible until it’s time to get back to work. It comes around before you know it. Time really flies, especially in this league.
I feel like I just got here and I just had my first start in Jacksonville, but I’m already going into Year Four. I’m a legitimate vet now. I can’t consider myself a young guy any more. I’ll be 25 in March which is five years to 30 which is halfway to 60. I’m pretty old and the time goes pretty fast. I can’t say I’m upset about it though.
Being a rookie is a lot more difficult than being a vet. In my rookie season, I had a lot of challenges and a lot of pressure put on me and I was able to step up and make some plays and make a little name for myself as a talented young player. Unfortunately, this past season, I don’t feel like I had as many opportunities, but you’ve got to make the best of the ones that you’ve been given, so I’ve been a little disappointed in myself for not making the best of the opportunities that I was given this year.
I don’t know, I guess that it’s time to refocus and work on the things that I personally need to work on so I can be ready for next year and have the best season I’ve ever had which will hopefully propel our team to have one of the best seasons that we’ve ever had.
I don’t think I’m going to watch the playoffs. I’m not a big football fan to be honest with you. I never really watch that much football. It’s my job. I wonder if detectives watch Law and Order. It’s hard for me to really get into too much football. I just get angry, especially around playoff time. I just get angry because I’m not there. Like I’ve said before, I get annoyed at the people who call the game because they have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about — ever. It’s probably the same feeling for lawyers and detectives watching Law and Order when they do that show. I’m sure it’s nothing like that in real life. People watching CSI who are actual forensic detectives or whatever that is. The actual forensic scientists or whatever they are probably have a hard time watching CSI because I’m sure that’s pretty phony.
I have a hard time watching playoff football because I get angry and listening to the people calling the game have no idea what they’re talking about which makes me even more angry, and then I’m not there so I’m upset about being home watching it like a regular guy. So yeah, it’s hard for me to watch the playoffs. SportsCenter doesn’t come on much at my house. I don’t watch too much ESPN. I’m a Broncos fan only.
I’ve got a lot of things planned this offseason, one of which is opening the Darrent Williams Teen Center in March. I’ve got NFLPA meetings also in March and I’m going to try to take a few vacations and get out of the country and get myself a little culture. Should be fun. I’m looking forward to it. I’ll try to keep in contact with some of my close friends on the team and hopefully we can hang out together.
I really do love the defensive backs and the people I’ve gotten to know and I’m going to miss the ones who won’t be back next year. Hopefully I’m not one of the ones that they’re talking about next year about how much they miss Fox. Hopefully Fox is still here.
I don’t know 100 percent what the plan is for the blog in the future. I’m definitely going to continue to do it, but I’m going to take a couple weeks off and drop some surprise blogs on you guys throughout the course of the offseason. So stay on DenverBroncos.com, take a look at mine and the rest of the blogs and keep up on our Broncos news.
