Draft Season

February 18th, 2011 - 2:32pm by mike_riceOther posts by

The annual NFL scouting combine is just around the corner and with it will be an increase in talk and speculation about the NFL draft.

Most of the time, I don’t pay attention to a lot of the talk leading up to the draft. This year, however, I’ll be listening just a little more closely. Don’t get me wrong, I still think it is a lot of people saying a lot of things and many of those things are simply speculation.

One thing is true without a doubt: The Broncos need to have a strong draft.

I know, stop the presses. But the fact is, it’s really true.

4-3 Defense as base “D”

February 18th, 2011 - 8:36am by mark_cooperOther posts by

O.K. 4-3 as the base DEFENSE and Coach Fox mentioned probably using some other defensive fronts mixed in from time to time……….. I LIKE IT!! There’s a number of variations of the 4-3 which are called overs and unders and then you have the twists that go with it. A defense based on stopping the run and having the abilty to drop guys from time to time into coverage too.

What I like is you have multiple options with the blitz with 3 LB’s close to the line of scrimmage to mix up the looks and walk guys up and drop them easier.

What do you guys/gals think? And here to you fit our guys and possible draft picks in?? Been seeing a lot of draft speculation.

GO BRONCOS!!

Late Selections as Vital as Early Ones

February 17th, 2011 - 12:14pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Earlier I did a blog on the history of the Denver Broncos’ draft choices when the team has had a selection among the first 10 players in the entire draft.

There is no question that the potential for greatness is there where the choices are made, but it is very important that fans remember how significant late picks are in building a team as well, in addition to completely undrafted free agent players.

Let’s take a quick look at a number of very significant Broncos who were drafted either in the final round of the draft, or signed as an undrafted free agent player.

This will not even include the players like Terrell Davis and Shannon Sharpe, taken late but not at the end of the draft process.

Key Bronco players who were chosen in the final round of the draft and went on to have length NFL careers include:

Elway on Bailey

February 17th, 2011 - 10:15am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

John Elway just sent out a number of tweets regarding contract negotiations with Champ Bailey, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent. For those of you who don’t have Twitter, we figured we’d share them here.

“We’ve been working with Champ Bailey’s representative this week on a new contract, which is an important priority for us,” Elway wrote. “Our conversations have been constructive, and we’ll continue those talks in the hopes that we can reach an agreement. Champ’s an elite player who means a great deal to our entire organization and our fans. We want Champ to finish his Hall of Fame career as a Denver Bronco.”

CBA Update

February 15th, 2011 - 12:10pm by mark_cooperOther posts by

I like you all try to stay updated on the CBA, so I’ll share what I receive from Fourth and Goal. We’re all starting to get the details of what the main issues are going to come down to….but there are usually a few twists and I don’t profess to have all the answers.

ESPN.com Feb. 14, 2011
WASHINGTON — The NFL filed an unfair labor practice charge against its players’ union with the National Labor Relations Board on Monday.

The league’s filing says the union “consistently has failed to confer in good faith” during negotiations for a new contract and the union’s “conduct amounts to surface bargaining and an anticipatory refusal to bargain.”

A statement e-mailed to The Associated Press by union spokesman George Atallah says the NFL’s “claim has absolutely no merit.”

Future Of The League
The NLRB is a federal agency that enforces the nation’s labor laws and referees labor-management disputes.
The current collective bargaining agreement expires at the end of the day March 3. The NFL Players Association has said it expects the owners to lock out players; the NFL’s filing with the NLRB says that the union wants to “run out the clock” and, essentially, avoid reaching a new CBA so it can decertify and file an antitrust lawsuit. Players already have voted, team by team, to authorize decertifying their union if a new CBA isn’t reached by the deadline.

Draft is a Foundation for Success

February 15th, 2011 - 11:19am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

One of the things that has been emphasized over the years in the National Football League is that the annual player selection draft is a vital building block to a successful organization.

This year’s Super bowl champions, the Green Bay Packers, did a great job with a roster heavy on players selected in the draft.

The Denver Broncos have had that same type of success when we have had our greatest teams, and there is no question that the Broncos understand and respect that concept. This year the Broncos have the second pick in the entire draft and six selections overall. Three of the Broncos’ choices fall in the first 50, but later round selections can make a big impact as well.

The 1939 UCLA Backfield Unmatched in History

February 10th, 2011 - 3:39pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

This is Black History Month, and many tributes are made daily to various outstanding individuals of African-American ancestry, all very deserving and in many cases, very well known.

One of the most honored individuals, with complete justification of course, is Jackie Robinson, who broke the baseball color barrier in major league baseball and after a sterling 10-year career took his place in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

A lot of people even know that Jackie Robinson played college football at UCLA.

But as the late radio announcer Paul Harvey would often intone, that is not the rest of the story.

A Force Up Front

February 10th, 2011 - 2:53pm by mike_riceOther posts by

Even with all the labor uncertainty surrounding the NFL, there will be a draft at the end of April. Right now, one of the top picks figures to be Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley, who is leaving school after a stellar junior season.

Fairley helped lead Auburn to a 22-19 win over Oregon in the BCS National Championship game. He was a consensus All-American and the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He also won the Lombardi Award given to the nation’s best lineman. He had 60 total tackles and set single-season Auburn records with 24 tackles for loss and 11-and-a-half sacks.

This week, he joined Dave Logan and Lois Melkonian on 850 KOA’s “The Ride Home” show.

850 KOA: In the national championship game, you played Oregon in the national championship, a team that runs the spread. They have amazing skill-position players and great speed. Going into that game, with Coach Chizik having a defensive mindset, what were some things you guys were primarily focused on going into the game?

Watching the Mocks: Feb. 10

February 10th, 2011 - 10:18am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

There haven’t been many changes atop the mock draft boards since we first Watched the Mocks on Jan. 21, and checked back in on Jan. 28.

Several updated mocks have popped up, including Todd McShay’s for ESPN.com, Peter Schrager’s for FoxSports.com, and Rob Rang and Chad Reuter’s for CBSSports.com.

All four stuck with their original picks from the first batch of mock drafts.

Superbowl XLV, Draft, CBA, QB’s

February 8th, 2011 - 1:03pm by mark_cooperOther posts by

Well looked like a we had a few more Packers fans than Steelers fans on the blog (smart folks) and I ate some crow after the game. My wife was a Packer Backer and yea, heard it all the way home as my two boys giggled at me. They picked the Steelers too, so Mom was right….this time. :o )

Caramelloo, agree with your post in the prior blog and you all know the drill, the Broncos management has to keep things on an even keel and keep everyones stock as high as possible to keep the highest perceived value as possible…….don’t blame them if you want to get the highest pick possible for a trade regardless of who it is.

The CBA, again, same drill..blah, blah, blah and then they get together and “I THINK” they will hammer something out. The games at the top of it’s public awareness and popularity right now and the worse thing for all parties is to have a lockout or go into a scab-season, etc. So, I like you hope it’s all lip-service. There’s plenty of dollars to go around and I agree with a number of issues on both sides.

You have to have a rookie salary cap with the run-a-way dollars the owners are paying or UNPROVEN talent…seriously. Sorry fellas but having a good college career is meaningless in the NFL and the owners shouldn’t have to pay for it. I also agree that the prior players should have better benefits since they helped make the game what it is today. It’s a violent sport and some will say then don’t play….yea right.

Guys that say that, never had a chance to play, kinda like the talking heads in the media that never played at any level. Anyway, doesn’t make sense to get into all the items until we know what the major items will end up being that can or can’t be agreed on becuae it’s really just a waste of time. Kind of like speculating on a QB’s abilities until they have played. :O)

What do you all think and CONGRATS to all you Packer pickers……you won!!
