Notebook: The Final Countdown

December 30th, 2011 - 2:46pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

Today is the last Friday of the regular season. Thus, we are going to start things off with a quote from Head Coach John Fox about the team’s mindset heading into the finale against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I think four months ago if you would have told me we were going to be in the last regular season game of the season with a chance to get into the playoffs, I probably would have taken it and run,” Fox said. “We’ve got some unfinished business, and it’s all out there for the taking. Now we just have to go take it.”

FILLING BIG SHOES

It looks like everyone should be healthy and ready to go Sunday as all the players listed on the injury report are probable with one notable exception: safety Brian Dawkins.

Dawkins, who hasn’t practiced all week with a neck injury, is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s contest. Dawkins missed the entire New England game and most of the Buffalo game with an injury, meaning that for the third straight game, Denver is most likely going to be without its most experienced player.

Yellow Jacket Connection

December 30th, 2011 - 9:07am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas spent his first season at Georgia Tech with Lions Pro Bowl wideout Calvin Johnson. Thomas soaked up as much as he could from Johnson, who was a senior, which was evident this past December.

Thomas and Johnson finished the month with the exact same statistics. The pair tied for the NFL lead with 414 receiving yards in December, and both did so on 22 catches. Each player caught three touchdowns, which tied for fifth in the NFL during that span.

“It’s cool — two guys from Tech with the same numbers,” Thomas said. “It was just funny. I’m actually going to call him about it today and talk to him.”

Notebook: Beware of Bowe

December 29th, 2011 - 4:56pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

For the third time in four seasons, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving mark.

That doesn’t surprise Champ Bailey, who will most likely spend the majority of his day matched up against the talented wideout.

“He’s tough every time I face him,” Bailey said. “He’s one of my biggest challenges, and I look forward to it every time because I know he’s going to give his best shot. It’s just his size and speed — the combination of both. And he’s so deceptive with his speed in route-running, because he can start and stop just like a quick guy. He’s dangerous.”

Bailey Presented with Darrent Williams Good Guy Award

December 29th, 2011 - 3:02pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

On Thursday, Champ Bailey was presented with the Darrent Williams Good Guy Award.

The award, given by the Denver chapter of the Pro Football Writers of America, is voted on by the local media and presented to the player that best exemplifies Darrent Williams’ enthusiasm, cooperation and honesty while dealing with members of the press.

“It’s for somebody who handles the job with professionalism, win or lose,” said the Denver Post’s Jeff Legwold when presenting Bailey with the award. “Being that you played with Darrent, we all think it’s a pretty good idea to give it to you this year.”

The Broncos host Kansas City this weekend for the 103rd regular-season meeting between the two divisional rivals.

Denver trails the all-time series 47-55, but is 32-19 against the Chiefs at home. The Broncos won the first meeting between the two clubs this season 17-10 at Kansas City.

The teams have met once in the postseason, with the Broncos coming out with a 14-10 victory in what Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway called his greatest memory from his time playing against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

Notebook: Focused on the Goal

This Sunday’s regular-season finale between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos pits two division rivals against each other for the second time this season as they ring in the new year.

In any season, that’s enough to get the blood flowing and adrenaline pumping as the players gear up for the contest throughout the week.

Except this time, it means much more.

Johnson: Chiefs Will Bring Their Best

December 28th, 2011 - 12:55pm by Max HensonOther posts by

Had the Chiefs won last week, they’d enter Sunday’s game in Denver with a chance to make the playoffs.

But Kansas City lost to Oakland in overtime, eliminating them from postseason contention.

The Chiefs are now relegated to playing potential spoiler against the Broncos in Week 17, and linebacker Derrick Johnson said his team is determined to the end its season with a win.

Opponent Rewind: Kansas City Chiefs

December 28th, 2011 - 10:49am by Stuart ZaasOther posts by

Kansas City hosted Oakland in Week 16, needing a win to keep its postseason chances alive. After a closely contested, back-and-forth four quarters of regulation, the Raiders were able to come away with a 16-13 victory on a 36-yard field goal by kicker Sebastian Janikowski on the opening possession of overtime.

Janikowski started the day’s scoring with a 28-yard field goal on the first drive of the game after Bryan McCann returned the opening kickoff 91 yards to the Chiefs 14-yard line.

Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop knotted the game at 3-3 with a 23-yard field goal that was set up by linebacker Derrick Johnson’s interception and 17-yard return that set Kansas City up inside Oakland territory to start its drive.

The Time is Now

December 28th, 2011 - 9:05am by mike_riceOther posts by

If the Broncos consider themselves a team worthy of making the playoffs, they will have the chance to prove it Sunday when they host the Kansas City Chiefs. If the Broncos win, they will capture the AFC West title, amazing as that may be.

If the Broncos lose, then they’ll have to hope the Chargers defeat the Raiders. If that happens, the Broncos will still win the division and advance to the playoffs.

But they don’t want to back in. They want to go in having taken care of their business.

They have the opportunity to do just that.

Broncos Pro Bowlers Announced

December 27th, 2011 - 5:02pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by

Three Broncos will be adding a little pineapple to their diet next month, one for the first time.

Champ Bailey, Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller were voted to the 2012 Pro Bowl, it was announced Tuesday. Bailey and Miller are starters. Dumervil, currently a reserve, might end up a starter as New England’s Andre Carter — who is on injured reserve — is slated to be a Pro Bowl starter ahead of him.

“It’s always exciting when you have guys going to the Pro Bowl,” Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said. “They’re three guys that are very deserving.”

Tim Tebow, Willis McGahee, Ryan Clady, Brian Dawkins Matt Prater and Britton Colquitt are alternates for the all-star game.
