Broncos Began Life as Preseason Vagabonds

August 26th, 2010 - 12:31pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

This week the Denver Broncos, winners of two world championships in their great history, will host the Pittsburgh Steelers, winners of six world titles in their even more illustrious history in a nationally televised game this Sunday night.

FOX, which is a network that did not even exist when the Broncos began play in 1960, will televise the game. The announcers doing the game were not born in 1960, but play-by-play man Joe Buck’s father Jack was already establishing himself as one of the great baseball voices at that time.

But things were a lot different for the Broncos in 1960, and few franchises in sport have come as far from their beginnings.

A Memorable Debut

Margaret

Hi there, Broncos Fans!

So most of us are aware that last Saturday’s match up against the Detroit Lions marked the Broncos’ first home game this season at INVESCO Field.  What you may not know, however, is that it was also the cheerleaders’ debut performing as a team and my first game ever as a Denver Broncos Cheerleader!

My name is Margaret and like 10 other girls on the team, this is my rookie year as a Denver Broncos Cheerleader.  I am so excited after my first game to now have the opportunity to give you fans a little insight into what it is like for us on game day down on the field cheering on our beloved Broncos!

Coming Home

Sperry

Kory Sperry couldn’t help but chuckle Wednesday morning when asked to recall his range of emotions this week.

The Dolphins released the second-year tight end from Colorado State on Tuesday. A day later, Sperry received a call from his agent telling him he’d been picked up by his hometown team.

Suddenly, the 25-year-old had the chance he’d dreamed of since his childhood growing up in Pueblo, Colo., and rooting on the John Elway-led Broncos.

“It was just a big shocker, man,” Sperry said. “I’ve followed the Broncos a lot, and I’m excited about what they’re doing. At the same time, just being close to my family is going to be fun. It got me real excited.”

The Hazards of the Five-Minute Interview

August 25th, 2010 - 10:11am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by

Those of us who work in the public relations departments of professional sports teams or very high profile college sports programs realize that we keep the team and players first, and that it is vital to do our best work behind the curtain, so to speak.

Believe me, it’s what goes on behind the curtain that sets up everything else, in pro sports, in politics and in a lot of public businesses.

I have at times advised people that it is what happens in the back room that matters most; the front room is just for show.

I don’t do many peeks behind the curtain, but here is a small one today. Because my staff and I sometimes chuckle about the perils we face daily — all a part of the job, and accepted by all, but it happens all the time.

Early Impressions

August 24th, 2010 - 11:33pm by mike_riceOther posts by

One of the hardest things to do is to evaluate preseason football. Teams keep play calling pretty vanilla. They protect their front line players. There is little, if any, talk of winning the games.

Yet here we are, halfway through the preseason. The Broncos have lost to the Bengals and the Lions, with games against the Steelers and Vikings still to come. I am left with several impressions.

Sperry Joins Squad

August 24th, 2010 - 3:18pm by Eric DetweilerOther posts by

Sperry

The Broncos were awarded tight end Kory Sperry off waivers from Miami on Tuesday. The team also waived Tyler Polumbus and officially released Akin Ayodele.

Sperry, a Colorado native who played collegiately at Colorado State, notched three catches for 31 yards and a touchdown in eight games, including one start, as a rookie with the Dolphins last season. Miami released the 6-foot-4, 238-pound tight end yesterday.

Polumbus played 31 games, including eight starts, the past two seasons with the Broncos. The former college free agent from Colorado filled in for Ryan Harris last season when the tackle missed eight games due to injury.

Ayodele signed with the Broncos in April, hoping to crack the rotation at linebacker in his ninth NFL season. On Tuesday, McDaniels said the team was releasing Ayodele now to give him a chance to catch on with another team.

Returning to Health

Buckhalter

On Tuesday, Head Coach Josh McDaniels kicked off his press conference with a little “good news on the injury front.”

Correll Buckhalter, Champ Bailey, Demaryius Thomas, Chris Kuper, and D.J. Williams will return to the practice field this afternoon.

“Any guy that’s injured and steps back onto the field is a positive note,” said Buckhalter, who missed all but one day of training camp. “You want to be out here with your guys and you want to get better to get yourself to the season.”

Tomorrow, Ryan Clady and LenDale White are expected to get back to practice.

McDaniels said he wouldn’t speculate on whether any of the players will see time in Sunday’s preseason matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he’s simply glad to see all the familiar faces back on the field.

“The rest of the guys are continuing to get treatment — we don’t want to put a timetable on that — but that’s our goal for today and tomorrow in terms of getting some people back out there,” McDaniels said. “It feels good to get a few more of those guys out there and actually start practicing together a little bit and get ready for the year.”

Three Players Waived

Baker

The Broncos trimmed their roster Monday when they waived Toney Baker, Kirk Barton and Patrick Carter.

Baker signed with the team in April as a college free agent out of N.C. State. The running back registered a pair of special teams tackles in the preseason opener at Cincinnati but did not have a carry in either of the first two preseason contests.

The team was awarded Barton, an offensive lineman, off waivers from Detroit on July 7.

Carter, a wide receiver, joined the squad on August 5. He did not record a catch in either preseason game.

Young ‘Lions’ in Our Lineup

Kyle Orton

Bruce Hall, Lance Ball, Eric Decker and Matthew Willis mixed in with Jabar Gaffney’s performance excited me. Yep, I’m a homer. Justin Fargas did a nice job, too. You know me if you’ve been reading this long enough. In preseason I look for bright spots and don’t really watch the game as much.

I liked what I saw out of the first team offense outside other than the tipped pass, which is going to happen from time to time, and the game got out of hand early, but by halftime we were only down by two. It was a nice drive during the 2-minute drill.
