A New Transition

Through the better part of three decades as a collegiate head coach, Steve Spurrier has instructed his share of talented wide receivers.

From his 12-year tenure at Florida and on through his current post at South Carolina, Spurrier has worked with a number of NFL-caliber wide outs in the Southeastern Conference — thirteen-year NFL veteran Ike Hilliard, Minnesota Vikings 2007 draft pick Sidney Rice and first-year Bronco Jabar Gaffney are a few names that come to mind.

Yet, Spurrier has labeled a different individual as the “best wide receiver I’ve ever coached.” The ol’ ball coach has given that distinct honor to Broncos fifth round draft pick Kenny McKinley.

“I really appreciate Coach Spurrier and look up to him. Those comments coming from him, with all the people that he has coached, is a big statement,” McKinley said at his post-draft press conference. “When I heard that he said that it really got to me because he got me to where I am today coming from playing QB in high school to being a pretty good receiver playing in the NFL for the Denver Broncos.”

Brees: Good Situation for Orton

It’s not letting me embed this one in the site, but here’s a link to a video of Drew Brees talking about fellow former Purdue quarterback Kyle Orton.

Brees compares his situation — starting up again in New Orleans with a first-year head coach in 2006 — to Orton’s in Denver with Head Coach Josh McDaniels.

Broncos Awarded Jones

The Broncos were awarded wide receiver C.J. Jones off waivers from Kansas City, the team announced on Wednesday.

Jones is a third-year wideout who has spent time on the active roster with Cleveland in 2003 and the practice squad with the Browns in 2003-04. The move reunites the 5-11, 195-pound receiver with Head Coach Josh McDaniels, as Jones spent time on New England’s active roster in 2008 and spent the entire 2007 season on the Patriot’s practice squad.

Broncos Release Five Players

The Broncos on Thursday released linebackers Boss Bailey and Louis Green along with safety Herana-Daze Jones, it was announced. The club also waived running back Kestahn Moore and cornerback Rashod Moulton.

Bailey joined the team as an unrestricted free agent before the 2008 season; Green played 64 games with the club since signing in 2003; Jones spent the final month of the 2008 season on the team’s roster; Moore signed with the team as a rookie free agent during the offseason; and Moulton spent the majority of the 2008 season on the practice squad.

Lloyd Excited to Play in Denver

On Monday, the Broncos signed Brandon Lloyd. By Wednesday, the seventh-year pro was already jumping head-first into voluntary workouts.

He, along with about 20 teammates, went up to Red Rocks to work on conditioning — a story we’ll have more on in the next few days.

“I just kind of wanted to get adjusted to the altitude, so the best way to do that is kind of jump right in the fire,” Lloyd said with a laugh.

So while he’s already bonding with his teammates through hard work, he is already familiar with one of the quarterbacks who will be throwing him the ball when training camp rolls around.

Single-Game Tickets On Sale July 18

The Broncos on Monday announced that tickets for individual games during the 2009 season at INVESCO Field at Mile High will go on sale beginning Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m. MDT. Ticket availability will vary, as the Broncos have sold out 301 consecutive regular-season games dating back to 1970, but a limited number of tickets (mostly single seats) will be available for all games beginning on Saturday, July 18.

The Broncos offer a variety of price levels as well as points of purchase for their fans. Included in the inventory available for the public are full-price tickets, half-price tickets, ADA tickets and club seat tickets.

Ticket purchasers may acquire seats via the Ticketmaster charge-by-phone system (800-745-3000), through the Internet at Ticketmaster.com, local Ticketmaster outlets (including select Macy’s stores, select FYE stores, Cherry Creek Shopping Center Guest Services Desk, The Official Visitors Center, 1600 California St. Ste. 6, Angelo’s CD’S & More, and Twist & Shout) or at the Broncos Ticket Office at INVESCO Field at Mile High. For best results, the Broncos recommend the online and charge-by-phone capabilities that Ticketmaster provides to help avoid long lines while gaining access to the same inventory.

Full-price tickets go on sale at 11 a.m. MDT on Saturday, July 18. Please note that there will be a limit of four tickets per household per game.

Half-price tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. MDT. 2,000 half-price tickets will be available for purchase. There will be a limit of four tickets per household and no multiple-game purchases are allowed.

Camp Comes to a Close

The Broncos concluded their final minicamp on Sunday, and the team will now have over a month off before training camp begins at Dove Valley in late July.

Before departing, the club got in some serious work on Sunday. For the majority of practice, the players worked on game-simulating situations. Nearly every scenario was covered during 11-on-11s, as the team marched up and down the field working on different packages. On one play, the offense was backed up to its own goal line. A few plays later, they were working in the red zone.

McDaniels believes the players now understand what the coaching staff expects from them on a daily basis and what the systems are all about. Accordingly, he was pleased with what the team accomplished on the final day of camp.

Minicamp: Day Two

On a day when Head Coach Josh McDaniels named Kyle Orton the starter at quarterback, there was plenty to report from practice.

The music continued during Saturday’s session, kicking off with a little U2 when the media arrived as the team stretched. The playlist today ranged from The Roots to Gavin DeGraw to Run DMC. In addition, one of the strangest transitions you’ll ever hear — Kenny Chesney’s “Summertime” was followed immediately by The Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight.” Clearly the Broncos have an eclectic taste in music.

Now here are a few snippets from Saturday’s practice.

MAKING PLAYS

Last season, the Broncos defense didn’t cause many turnovers. So the coaching staff has clearly made it a point to work on that statistic this offseason.

During Saturday’s practice, one defensive back would line up five yards behind a receiver while another lined up about 15 yards ahead. Defensive backs coach Ed Donatell blew the whistle and threw the ball to the receiver, who took off. The trailing DB chased down the receiver, who was being held up by the DB who lined up in front, and practiced punching the ball out to cause a fumble.

It’s all about teaching that if you’re not the first man to the tackle, try to strip the ball.
