A Wild Weekend Awaits

April 23rd, 2009 - 10:49am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

The countdown is on. The draft approaches. Let the speculation continue.

In recent days, the draft buzz surrounding USC quarterback Mark Sanchez has reached fever pitch. I’ll cut to the chase: I don’t expect Sanchez to be wearing a Broncos uniform this fall.

There are several reasons for this.

First, the Broncos need a lot of help on defense. With the twelfth and eighteenth overall picks, they could select a couple of highly rated defensive players and, hopefully, continue the rebuilding process on the defensive side off the ball.

They need a nose tackle; they need a pass rusher; they need a tough linebacker.

Preseason Schedule Finalized

April 20th, 2009 - 5:17pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Don’t know if you all noticed, but the first two games of the Broncos’ 2009 preseason didn’t have an official date and time when the regular season schedule was released last week.

Well, now they do. The team opens the preseason on Friday, August 14 at San Francisco in a 7:00 p.m. PDT battle with the 49ers. Next comes a trip to Seattle on Saturday, August 22 with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MDT.

Mark your calendars accordingly.

Closing Out Camp

April 19th, 2009 - 3:10pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos’ first mini-camp of the Josh McDaniels era wrapped up on Sunday, and it did nothing if not get the players and coaches even more excited for this year’s campaign.

“It was great,” McDaniels said. “You could see the energy that’s out here — the players are practicing hard, the coaches are coaching hard and everybody has the same goal in mind, which is to get better every day. We’re going to pay the price right now to try to win in September.”

Sunday’s practice was open to the media, so here are some quick hits from the session:

  • Coach McDaniels has certainly taken a hands-on approach for the first three practices. Not only has he rotated from position group to position group, he’s also gotten involved in some of the drills. He lined up as a defensive back to make sure the receivers were running crisp routes, and even tried to slap the ball away from running backs to stress ball control as they finished up a drill.

“He’s had some good offenses over the last few years in New England, and you don’t get that way by just sitting back in your chair and watching TV,” Chris Simms said. “I think he’s a pretty hands-on guy.”

    Tough schedule, your thoughts??

    April 19th, 2009 - 2:40pm by mark_cooperOther posts by mark_cooper

I was reading the paper between shoveling this Friday and Saturday. Had a crazy week at the office with closings at the end of the day in a snow storm Friday. If you’re from here you know EXACTLY what I mean, wow, spring storms…crazy! Hope everyone was safe!!

The schedule came out and Krieger, I think, says 5-11. Before we get to far into the draft talks and picks…you guys are really good at this and I wanted to get your opinion on the schedule. We’ll have plenty of time to talk draft but I was really curious of your opinion and thoughts are on the schdeule???

    Broncos Sign Gorin

April 18th, 2009 - 9:07am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos on Friday signed unrestricted free-agent tackle Brandon Gorin, it was announced.

The ninth-year offensive lineman joins the team after stints with St. Louis (2007-08), Arizona (2006), New England (2002-06) and San Diego (2001). He entered the NFL with the Chargers in 2001 as a seventh-round selection (201st overall) from Purdue University.

Gorin has appeared in 42 games (26 starts) and seven postseason contests (5 starts) in his career. Last season, he injured his shoulder during St. Louis’ preseason opener against Tennessee and was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 19.

He has had a lot of success in his career so far — in New England, he helped running back Corey Dillon set the Patriots’ single-season rushing record with 1,635 yards as he played in a career-high 14 games (10 starts) and all three of New England’s postseason outings, including its Super Bowl XXXIX win over Philadelphia.

Gorin joins an offensive line that allowed just 12 sacks last season.

New Schedule, New Team — For All 32

    April 15th, 2009 - 3:05pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

I was very impressed by the comments of Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin in his press conference on the Monday after the Super Bowl.

One of the things he said that really resonated with me was while acknowledging the great accomplishment of his Pittsburgh team in winning its sixth world championship for the franchise, he emphasized that this was the accomplishment of the 2008 team. It had no bearing on what would happen in 2009.

I was reminded of that in a recent interview which Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels did.

When asked to comment on the recently announced 2009 schedule, Josh said he liked it and looked forward to competing every week.

But Josh made a great comment, I thought, in noting that fans look at each year’s schedule within the mental context of what last year’s team was.

So 32 teams are being judged and evaluated with a completely new schedule, but based on what the previous year’s team was.

And that could not be more irrelevant. Last year is not this year.

    Draft Winds Blow Broncos Way

    April 9th, 2009 - 10:47am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

One of the most exciting parts of the National Football League year is the annual draft, this year to be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26.

The anticipation by fans is great, and in my capacity with the Broncos I have long felt that the draft weekend is the equivalent of a major game weekend for the team in terms of publicity, passion and interest.

With the recent Chicago trade included the Broncos at this time go into the draft with 10 selections, including two number one picks for the first time in franchise history. This only serves to increase the already staggering degree of interest in the 2009 selection process.

The Broncos have chosen more players from the University of Florida than any other school, 17, followed closely by the 14 players taken from the University of Colorado.
