The Denver Broncos on Tuesday waived running back Cory Boyd, it was announced.

Celebrating the 50th with Original Uniforms

March 30th, 2009 - 12:36pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

Many Denver Broncos fans by now are familiar with last week’s announcement at the National Football League annual meeting relative to the celebration of the 50th year of play by the eight original American Football League teams this year.

I was in elementary school when the AFL and Broncos started playing, at that time unaware that I would be fortunate to ultimately have a career spanning four decades with this new franchise.

One of the pivotal elements of this celebration is that each of the eight teams will wear a throwback uniform, with the Broncos opting for their original threads.

If you are not sitting down, you might want to.

Broncos’ 2009 Preseason Revealed

March 30th, 2009 - 10:04am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

And the pieces keep falling into place.

More information on the Broncos’ 2009 schedule — well, the 2009 preseason, at least — were released today, and two West Coast trips and a primetime home game are on the docket.

In Week 1 of the preseason, the team travels to San Francisco to take on the 49ers. The exact date and time haven’t been announced, but the game will be played sometime between August 13-17 and broadcast on CBS4.

In Week 2, Denver heads to Seattle to battle the Seahawks. Once again, the exact date and time haven’t been announced but the contest will be played between August 20-24 and broadcast on CBS4.

The next two weeks of the preseason have the Broncos hosting the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals, respectively.

For Broncos, Snow Equals Sweat

March 27th, 2009 - 1:52pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

As you can see, the Broncos practice field hasn’t exactly been available for the offseason conditioning program the past two days.

The snow has forced the players inside to the weight room and indoor field, where Strength and Conditioning Coach Rich Tuten has been making sure they’re in top condition as mini camps near.

Andrew Pinnock said he feels like the work is even harder when you don’t have the fresh air around you.

“It’s hard — I figured that out yesterday,” he said, still some sweat beading on his forehead. “It’s already a little thin oxygen outside, but going inside in the little bubble with everybody, it definitely makes it even harder.”

So is Coach Tuten running you guys ragged?

“He’s putting us through a great workout –” Pinnock started to say before a voice chimed in from a few lockers away.

“Yes. Ben Hamilton says yes,” Hamilton said, bringing out a laugh from Pinnock.

“Alright, you’ve got the answer,” the fullback said with a smile. “But when I take my shirt off now, my wife says, ‘Ooh!’”

New Rules in 2009

March 25th, 2009 - 10:06am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Updated 4:30 p.m. MDT

More announcements out of the NFL Annual Meeting — the league has announced several rule changes, one rule “adjustment” and a couple points of emphasis for the 2009 season.

First, the adjustment. Defenders that are knocked down to the ground can no longer lunge at a quarterback below the knees if the play is ongoing. Taking a swipe to try to cause a sack is acceptable, but diving when the defender is already on the ground will not be allowed.

Most of the rule changes have to do with player safety.

Championship Quote — Guess Who

March 24th, 2009 - 3:20pm by mark_cooperOther posts by mark_cooper

Here’s a great quote and no cheating before you get the answer. You have to read to the bottom to get the answer. Guess the man and the sport … you’ll be pleasantly surprised, then see if you guessed correctly.

QUOTE:
“The game always gave me far more than I ever gave it . The game was here long before I was, and will be here long after I’m gone. The only thing I hope I did was never put in question my love for the game, or my passion to be counted on when it mattered most. I did everything I could to win every time I was handed the ball.”

1960 Uniforms — Twice

March 24th, 2009 - 10:07am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

I’ve noticed on the message boards and in the comments that many of you are wondering if the Broncos will don their “throwback” jerseys any time this season — the 50th anniversary of the team and the AFL.

Well, it has just been formally announced from the NFL Annual Meeting in Dana Point, Calif., that the original eight AFL teams — the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs (then the Dallas Texans), New England Patriots (then the Boston Patriots), New York Jets (then the Titans of New York), Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers and Tennessee Titans (then the Houston Oilers) — will play head-to-head in one home and one away “Legacy Games” to honor the anniversary.

As a part of those games, the teams will each wear their original jerseys. That means the Broncos will don their 1960 jersey — a brown and yellow uniform with a brown helmet — twice. You can see Head Coach Josh McDaniels holding up an example of the jersey at the top of this blog.

A Much-Needed Break

March 24th, 2009 - 7:04am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

The stakes are high. The emotions are raw. Everyone wants to see a resolution in the situation between the Broncos and quarterback Jay Cutler and we all wanted it yesterday.

The fact is that sometimes things just take time.

If you had asked me two weeks ago how I thought this saga would end, I would have said without a doubt I believed Jay Cutler would be back as the Broncos’ starting quarterback in 2009.

Now, I can only hope he will be back.

The tough part in trying to come to an opinion about a situation such as this is that people on the outside, and I include myself in that group, don’t really and truly know what is going on. People might think they know based on who tells what to whom.

But when it gets right down to it, we weren’t in the meetings. We didn’t hear the various conversations that went on. The people who were in the meetings and were involved in the conversations have often come away with much differing thoughts on what transpired.

I have never liked playing the blame-game; it just doesn’t accomplish much. So I’m not going to sit here and say who I think is right in this whole thing because I just don’t know. Call that a cop-out if you like but sometimes I believe we all think too highly of our uninformed opinions.

McDaniels Interview on NFL Network

March 23rd, 2009 - 1:54pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Head Coach Josh McDaniels sat down with NFL Network for a one-on-one interview. The interview can be viewed in its entirety below.

Below are excerpts from the interview.

Scott Hanson: What’s the latest on the Jay Cutler situation?

Josh McDaniels: We’re working through that. Jay and I will have an opportunity to talk more as we go here. I know it’s been a very public issue and this is something that I think happens more than people realize. We have a relationship, nobody knows where it stands right now, but it’s going to get better. It will continue to get better, I believe that. I think it’s something that both parties have to work toward a solid resolution. We have a good nucleus of players there that are looking forward to seeing him back at the facility and working with him. It will get to that point at some point in the near future.

Hanson: Do you see him as the quarterback of the Denver Broncos?

McDaniels: Yes. He’s our quarterback.

Hanson: Present-tense…

McDaniels: He’s our quarterback. Period.
