NFL Scouting Combine: Day 3

February 21st, 2009 - 8:25am by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by Kyle Sonneman

9:23 a.m. EST: Good morning and happy Saturday to you all. It seems as though a bit of a warm front has blown through the greater Indianapolis area, as frost bite didn’t kick in until just before we approached the stadium.

Anticipation is filling the air as the defensive linemen and linebackers will make their way to the Lucas Oil media room. Hopefully they will start filing in within the hour.

As we have the last couple of days, we will try to bring you the sites and sounds from the media room. But if you have any specific questions, please feel free to fire them and we will do our best to get them answered.

Also, the workouts will start revving up today. For the latest results and the NFL Network broadcast schedule, click on the links at the bottom of this blog.

Changing my game

February 18th, 2009 - 4:28pm by MilesOther posts by Miles

Now, you all know that I’m a pretty good football player.  I’d like to think I’m a good athlete in general.  That’s why I didn’t think twice when asked to strap on the pads and play goalie last Saturday night at the Mammoth Mascot Game.  I’m used to pads, but being a Lacrosse Goalie is borderline ridiculous.  After making sure my lower half was taken care of, the next thing I wanted to protect is my face.  I mean, when you got a face like mine, it’s worth taking care of.  Unfortunately, they don’t make masks for horses, so I had to make my own.  I was torn between a “Jason” like hockey mask, or the cage.  As it turns out, that plastic is pretty hard to get ahold of, so I went with the wire cage.  After getting my bearing in the crease, I did a pretty solid job of defending my territory.  I blocked a couple of good shots, and even denied Rocky on a breakaway. (you can see the aftermath in the pictures below)  In the end, my team won!  I did get called out by Wooly at the end, so we had a little Sumo match, that ended with me giving him a good whack in the shins with my goalie stick.  What!?  He started it!  Check out the pics.

Geared Up!

New Staff Off and Running

February 18th, 2009 - 11:03am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

The new tandem of Head Coach Josh McDaniels and General Manager Brian Xanders is off and running, as one can tell by the roster moves coming out of Dove Valley these days.

Coach McDaniels exudes an energy level that is truly infectious, and the entire organization seems to be energized by his personality.

The coaching staff is now complete, and it includes some names and faces very familiar to Bronco fans.

Of course, Bobby Turner continues as the running backs coach and Rick Dennison has the offensive line, while fan favorite (as a player) Keith Burns remains in his special teams capacity as well. Rich Tuten and top assistant Greg Saporta continue to handle strength and conditioning for the Broncos.

Shake up in the House!

Welcome to the NFL — if you haven’t already heard those words either on the field or in the locker room. Coach is preparing for his new line-up. You Coopster-bloggers, I can’t wait to hear what you have to say because it was a bone of contention all year on the blog.

Either you guys/gals loved him or hated him. Me… he held down the opposite side of a Pro-Bowler and one of the best in the league and was thrown at, a lot, and had some tough duties. He seemed to play better when Champ was hurt, but I won’t profess “as you know,” to know the defensive back position as well as I know other spots on the filed so I have to go with the pro’s on what they see and how they call it… you bloggers! :o)

It looks to be an interesting off-season, so stay tuned and let me know what you think because Bly was a topic all year on this blog.

If you’ve never blogged in here….. check it out, we have some great folks and interesting exchanges…. just check prior blogs and get ready to laugh a little.

Jones and Polumbus Back in School

February 17th, 2009 - 7:31pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

95 players have enrolled in the NFL Business Management and Entrepreneurial Program, and among those 95 are two Broncos — Herana-Daze Jones and Tyler Polumbus.

The program works with four prestigious universities — the Harvard Business School, the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania — as part of an ongoing NFL-NFLPA initiative to assist players in preparing for their post-playing careers. Since the program’s 2005 inception, 407 players have participated in sessions at the four business schools.

Former Bronco Briscoe Honored

February 15th, 2009 - 4:06pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

The name Marlin Briscoe may not come immediately to the front in the minds of younger fans when they think about the Denver Broncos.

But for those who have followed the organization since its inception, the name should sound familiar.

The Broncos selected Briscoe in the 14th round of the 1968 NFL Draft, making him the first African American quarterback for the Broncos. And in that first year, he made history by becoming the first African American quarterback to start a game in the NFL.

Despite being listed eighth on the depth chart during training camp, Briscoe made the roster back in 1968. Then on September 29, 1968, in a game against the Boston Patriots, starter Steve Tensi broke his collarbone and backup Joe DiVito wasn’t getting the job done. Then Head Coach Lou Saban put Briscoe in the game in the fourth quarter. He led the Broncos on an 80-yard scoring drive to win the game.

Trying To Get Back To The Top

February 12th, 2009 - 10:48pm by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

As I was watching the Super Bowl, my thoughts drifted to ten years ago, when the Broncos were showing they were the best in the NFL.

I wondered how far the Broncos might be from again scaling to the top of the league and hoisting another Lombardi Trophy. I realized that by looking at the Steelers and Cardinals, one can get at least some idea of how close, or how far, the Broncos might be from their third NFL title.

CULTURE OF WINNING

This is obvious with the Steelers. They were great decades ago. And they are still great. Sure, they have had some lean years but no team is great every year.

The Steelers personify toughness. And more often than not, they win. No team has more Super Bowl titles than Pittsburgh’s six. Enough said.
