Ah… you can almost smell it in the air. Draft season is just around the corner. This week, the Senior Bowl gets going and then in February is the NFL Scouting Combine.

Today the NFL officially announced the names of 46 players who have been granted special eligibility for this year’s draft. Each of these players has met the league’s three-year eligibility rule and submitted a written application in which he renounced his remaining college football eligibility.

Super Sunday is Set

Thoughts about the AFC and NFC Championship games:

PITTSBURGH 23, BALTIMORE 14

When a team plays at a high level on a consistent basis, it is easy to take for granted how good that team in. This just in: The Pittsburgh Steelers are really good.

They battled past the Ravens to get to another Super Bowl. And they looked good in the process.

Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was in complete control against a tough Ravens’ defense. The Steelers’ offense put 16 points on the board. They had some success running the ball, no small feat against the Ravens, and Big Ben made some big plays. He also knew when to cut his losses and avoid making the big mistake, preferring to let his defense protect field position.

In addition, Roethlisberger showed how tough he is by taking some fierce hits. He never seems to put up great stats, but Roethlisberger is a winner. He is in complete control of that offense. He plays hurt. He personifies a gritty Steelers’ team.

And let’s not forget that Roethlisberger gets a lot of help from a rugged Pittsburgh defense. Seriously, is there a better defense in the NFL? They held Ravens’ rookie quarterback Joe Flacco to 13 completions in 30 attempts for just 146 yards.

Peyton Hillis Update

January 15th, 2009 - 11:48am by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Saw that some fans on the message board yesterday were wondering about Peyton Hillis’ recovery from his hamstring injury he suffered against the Chiefs.

He’s been hanging around the locker room since he’s at the facilities rehabbing this offseason, and I thought I’d give you all a quick update.

He said everything’s coming along fine, and he’s not too concerned that he is staying in Denver working while many of his teammates are on vacation or home with their families.

“As long as I’m in here getting better, getting stronger, getting faster, there’s really not a problem for me,” he said.

New Coach, Fast Times at Broncos

January 14th, 2009 - 10:35am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

It has now been awhile since I have been able to contribute to our blog site, and the reasons for that are that it has been very, very busy here at the Broncos, and also that I wanted to be able to do this when there was concise information, not just speculation.

Things change.

There is an old saying that the only constant is change, and that has happened here at the Broncos, with Mike Shanahan no longer the team’s head coach and Josh McDaniels coming to the club from his highly successful stint at the New England Patriots.

He is in a whirlwind working pattern right now, interviewing and hiring his coaching staff, organization his administrative offices, and working simultaneously with our player personnel department talking about players, current and potential.

Wiegmann Heading to Hawaii

January 13th, 2009 - 12:56pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by Adam Zinser

Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall already have their tickets to the NFL’s annual all-star game, but now they’ll have a little company.

Casey Wiegmann will now join them in the 2009 Pro Bowl in February. He was listed as the first alternate at center, but with Kevin Mawae of the Titans bowing out of the game due to his torn triceps muscle, Wiegmann steps into the lineup.

This marks the first trip to the Pro Bowl for Wiegmann, who just wrapped up his 13th year in the league and first with the Broncos. He has started 127 consecutive games, the longest active streak among centers in the NFL.

The game will be played on Sunday, Feb. 8, at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu at 2:30 p.m. MST and will be televised by NBC.

Surprises In Every Corner

January 12th, 2009 - 10:33pm by Romi BeanOther posts by Romi Bean

IT’S OFFICIAL BRONCOS COUNTRY – WE HAVE A NEW HEAD COACH! Josh McDaniels has been named the new head coach of the Denver Broncos. McDaniels joins Romeo Crennel and Eric Mangini who, prior to becoming a head coach, served under the tutelage of Bill Belichick. Belichick spent his early years learning under the auspices of another brilliant coach, Bill Parcells. I’d say that this is quite an impressive coaching tree to be a part of!

For some, it is still a very surreal feeling calling someone other than Mike Shanahan our head coach. But I think we are all going to proudly call Josh McDaniels our head coach from this point forward. A common concern heard on the news and throughout the community is the need for a strong defensive coach for the coming season. Well, even though McDaniels was the offensive coordinator for the Patriots, he assisted the defensive coaching staff for his first three seasons.

The New Guy in Town

January 12th, 2009 - 10:09pm by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

The toughest part about giving someone the opportunity to do something for the first time is that you simply don’t know how well that person will do.

In the case of new Broncos’ head coach Josh McDaniels, I’m not overly worried.

The Broncos and the 32-year-old McDaniels made their relationship official on Monday and the new coach spoke with reporters at Dove Valley. He was confident; he was articulate; he was engaging.

Now he is squarely on the proverbial spot, which is just where he wants to be.
