Oprah’s Big Give Lands at the Broncos Boys and Girls Club

March 7th, 2008 - 8:54am by cindy_gallowayOther posts by cindy_galloway

Happy Friday, Broncos Country.

We have learned some exciting news this week. Oprah Winfrey’s new show, The Big Give, will air a segment Sunday evening on the Denver Broncos Boys and Girls Club in Montbello.

Last year, Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler (along with teammate Tony Scheffler and former Broncos quarterback Preston Parsons) was contacted by one of The Big Give contestants who was challenged to spend some serious money in our community for worthy causes and people in need. Cutler took on the challenge and rallied his teammates to join him on a special delivery run to the Broncos Boys and Girls Club.

What was that special delivery about? Who actually benefited? Tune into The Big Give Sunday evening to find out. The segment will air on ABC at 8 p.m. MDT.

Have a great weekend in Broncos Country.

Two for Thursday: Broncos Also Sign WR Shepherd

Boy, this is a busy day …

Less than two hours after announcing the signing of one former Detroit Lion, Denver brought another one-time Lion aboard, signing wide receiver Edell Shepherd to a contract.

Terms were not disclosed.

Shepherd was in Lions camp last year before being waived on Aug. 28. He spent the subsequent season out football.

Boss Bailey Now a Bronco

March 6th, 2008 - 3:37pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Boss Bailey is a Bronco, officially. The team announced at 3:36 p.m. MST on Thursday that the team had signed the unrestricted free agent linebacker — and younger brother of All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey.

NFL.com first reported that the Broncos had agreed to terms with Boss Bailey on Thursday afternoon.

Boss Bailey has traversed one of the more inspirational paths in recent NFL annals. He overcame two torn knee ligaments just to make it into pro football; he tore a left-knee ligament in high school and one in his right knee during his time at the University of Georgia. He also missed the entire 2004 season with torn meniscus in his right knee, but recovered fully.

He amassed 118 tackles in the last two seasons for the Detroit Lions while only missing one game in that time.

The signing makes the Baileys the third set of siblings concurrently on a Broncos roster, following in the footsteps of Eldon and William Danenhauer — together for four games in 1960 — and Doug and Dave Widell, who shared a locker room from 1990-92.

Now Starring … Charley Johnson

March 6th, 2008 - 2:14pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

I’m old enough to recall when Miller Lite commercials were something to savor because of their liberal use of former athletes, coaches and other random celebrities … Bob Uecker, Bubba Smith, Billy Martin, Dick Butkus, Rodney Dangerfield, Bert Jones, and, of course, Mickey Spillane.

But I reckon I was too young to remember when Ring of Famer Charley Johnson — with his first name spelled differently — found himself the star of one of these spots in 1979:

So after some patient waiting, my friend Blitz from the Seahawks has delivered on his promise.  He volunteered to take all of our photos and make a slideshow out of them.  I think he did a bang up job!  Good to know if the mascot gig goes south, he could do the same and work in Hollywood or something.  Thanks Blitz!

Enjoy the show!

Favre’s Greatness Had Humble Beginning

March 4th, 2008 - 11:43am by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

I never met Brett Favre, though I’ve heard some stories. But I remember where I was when he took his first snap as a Green Bay Packer.

It’d be hard for me to forget, seeing as how I was there.

Sept. 13, 1992, was one of those Florida summer Sundays where not even a liberal dollop of supposedly sweatproof 50 SPF could prevent you from looking like a boiled lobster after just under four hours in the sun, where $20 of water and pink lemonade wasn’t enough to keep hydrated and cool. The high temperature was 89, but in the concrete bowl of Tampa Stadium — which basically became an open-air kiln on days like these — an on-field thermometer registered 109.

The Buccaneers were drilling the Packers, both on the scoreboard and in physical punishment. Days of defensive dominance like these would someday become routine for the Bucs with the acquisitions of John Lynch, Derrick Brooks, Warren Sapp and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin to guide them. But with a defense featuring Keith McCants, Mark Wheeler, Ray Seals, Darrick Brownlow, Darrell Fullington and Milton Mack, this sort of performance was a tad unusual.

The pressure left Green Bay starter Don Majkowski running for his life until he was finally unable to escape, bowing to injury in the third quarter. Trailing hopelessly, the Packers turned to a second-year quarterback from Southern Mississippi.

Report: Koutouvides Agrees to Terms

March 3rd, 2008 - 10:44am by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

ESPN.com reported Monday morning that the Broncos had come to terms with linebacker Niko Koutouvides, who spent the last four years with the Seattle Seahawks.

Monday afternoon, the Broncos announced that Koutouvides had signed his contract.  The Broncos also announced the signing of Keary Colbert and the re-signing of defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban; both had first been reported in the media Saturday.

The Purdue product, who turns 27 on March 25, primarily handled special-teams duties for the Seahawks throughout the last four years. He started three games during the 2004 campaign — two in the regular season and one in the playoffs.

Over his four years as a Seahawk, Koutouvides had 89 solo tackles, 22 assists and a sack.

Report: Broncos Add Colbert

March 1st, 2008 - 7:30pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

The Denver Post reported on its Web site Saturday that the Broncos agreed to terms with wide receiver Keary Colbert, an unrestricted free agent who spent the last four seasons with the Carolina Panthers.

Colbert has 109 catches for 1,424 yards and seven touchdowns in his career to date. He had 332 yards on 32 receptions with no scores last season as the Panthers struggled with injuries and instability at quarterback, starting four different passers (Jake Delhomme, David Carr, Vinny Testaverde and Matt Moore).
