Report: Lynch Staying

February 29th, 2008 - 7:17pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

The Denver Post reported Friday night that John Lynch will return to the Broncos for the 2008 season, which would be his fifth in Denver and 16th in the NFL.

Lynch has made the Pro Bowl in each of his four seasons in Denver and has been a team captain throughout his time in orange and blue.

Throughout the offseason, Lynch had discussed the need to take his time and be prudent in deciding whether to return, noting that this was the first juncture in his career in which he pondered the issue.

Walker, Gold Released

February 29th, 2008 - 2:53pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

As the league year and free agency began, the Denver tenures of two Broncos starters ended.

Wide receiver Javon Walker and weakside linebacker Ian Gold were both released on Friday afternoon, one day shy of two months after a frustrating 2007 season that saw both grapple with knee injuries.

BRONCOS TV: MASON ON WALKER, GOLD:

Gold’s injury sidelined him for most of the Week 15 loss at Houston and all of the last two games, during which Jamie Winborn took his place. Walker, meanwhile, finished the season on the field — with two receptions in each of the final three games — but knee problems took their toll, necessitating surgery on Oct. 19 and a recovery that limited him to spot duty upon his return to the field over a month later.

Walker seemed to foretell the future the day after the regular-season finale, when he said “No,” when asked whether he saw the team as a good fit for him.

“What it boils down to at this point is I’ve got to go where the best fit is for me,” he said during a rambling question-and-answer session that occasionally saw him lapse into the third person.

Javon Walker, Dec. 31, 2007:

“Wherever Javon’s talents can be used at, I’ve got to go to where the best fit’s for me.”

Microfracture surgery on the ailing knee is a possibility, Head Coach Mike Shanahan acknowledged at his season-ending press conference in January.

“There’s talk of a microfracture somewhere down the line,” Shanahan said then. “It could be two or three years from now; it could be four years. We just don’t know.”

Reports are also rampant that the Broncos have retained two of their unrestricted free agents — defensive end John Engelberger and tight end Nate Jackson.

Grist for the Rumor Mill

February 29th, 2008 - 12:02pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Ah, the offseason. When rumors become perceived as fleeting fact.

Evidently, anyone with a laptop and a camera can fan the flames of rumor. Case in point — the 2006 offseason, when a kid in a dorm room turns on his camera and says that John Abraham is headed to Denver in exchange for the No. 29 pick in the first round, then writes a story repeating the “news.”

Of course, Abraham never became a Bronco. The guy in his dorm, who posted under the site name “JetsTV.com,” presumably faded into Web flotsam. One can only wonder about his “sources” who clamed the deal was imminent.

It certainly does suck.Yet the non-story still had to be chased, even though it was on video that caused me to think of the description that Noah Vanderhoff, fictional video-arcade tycoon portrayed by Brian Doyle-Murray, offered upon completing a “Wayne’s World” screening:

“I think it’s two chimps on a Davenport in a basement.”

The Abraham gossip just one of many rumors to come across in recent years. The discussions of some gobble bandwith by the terabyte. In other cases, it’s just a sentence or two in a conversation, which was the case four years ago, when a media member came up to me and breathlessly proclaimed, “You guys are going to sign Charlie Garner,” deeming this to be virtually incontrovertible.

Still waiting for that one to happen.

Some of you post comments asking me for my take on these deals and I typically remain silent. Not that I’m ignoring you, but as a team employee, I try to stay out of the rumor business.

Not that I mind if you talk about rumors. Feel free. Discuss them below or on the message boards. But hopefully you’ll understand why I’ll stay out of the debate, for the most part.

And with that, I’ll turn it over to the Timex Social Club:

Vaya con Dios.

All NFL Teams 0-0

February 27th, 2008 - 10:20am by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

As we sit on the advent of free agency once again, as well as just a couple of months from the annual college draft, everybody has the excitement of being 0-0.

Every team has to live with what it most recently did, and for the Broncos that means the sour taste of a disappointing 7-9 season.  For the Giants, it means being on national late night TV shows and basking in the glow of a world championship, as well they should.

But the one hunk of knowledge that every NFL coach and personnel man knows is that yesterday’s accomplishments, or failures, should be studied, evaluated, learned from, put proudly on a shelf if it is a trophy — but then you have to move on to the new season.

Paying It Forward

February 26th, 2008 - 6:18pm by domonique_foxworthOther posts by domonique_foxworth

First I would like to start off by sending my condolences to onechocolateqt; I read in the responses that she just lost her mother. I remember meeting onechocolateqt at an autograph signing that I had in Cherry Creek and she was just wonderful. I think she was on her way to visit her mom at the time and as a friend I wanted to pass on my condolences first of all.

Also, in reading the responses I just wanted to thank everybody for the personal support that they gave me. It is really reassuring to know that my hard work gets recognized by the fans if nobody else. That is who we play for and it is the reason that we works so hard. So I do appreciate your support.

I did read the negative post and I must say it takes a big person to admit when they are wrong and it takes a brave person to say what he said initially on my blog. So I commend the man on both counts. But it is part of the job taking criticism, so it didn’t hurt my feelings nearly as much as the positive words he followed up with made me feel good. So I appreciate all the responses, the good and the bad. But definitely the good a little more.

This Just In!

February 26th, 2008 - 4:07pm by MilesOther posts by Miles

Well, “just” is kind of a stretch, but I’ve got an update from the Pro Bowl.  It took a while for the film to arrive via steamship, then the processing of the film, and finally the printing of the photos but that’s the way things are (in 1920).  The truth is, it’s hard to get motivated in the offseason.  But I vow to do a better job.

Now…Pro Bowl.  Every time I tell people I’m going to the Pro Bowl they always say, “Wow, must be nice!”  But you can never really get it into people’s heads that I’m there to work.  It’s not like they pay for my ticket and hotel room and just say, “Enjoy Hawaii!” It’s nice to be working in Hawaii but, it’s still work.  I really don’t envy people who hate their jobs, because mine is so awesome.

Now, while in Hawaii we visited a couple military bases, some hospitals, the NFL Experience, the Special Olympics, did the Block Party, Ohana (Family in Hawaiian) Day, Pregame Party and, of course, the game.  Obviously I didn’t list all the events, but just a sample to give you guys an idea of what goes on.  There were 12 of us over there and we split up to cover the events, so we didn’t all attend all of the events.

9:38 A.M. EST: We’re still expected to see some defensive linemen and linebackers come through here — LSU’s Glenn Dorsey, for one, since he didn’t make it into the media room Sunday — but most of this day will belong to the cornerbacks and safeties.

And by the way … good morning from Indianapolis.

9:45 A.M. EST: If you live in central Pennsylvania or happen to be a regular reader of The New York Times‘ sports section, this story is probably familiar to you. For those of us in the middle of the media room who are not, the following two paragraphs from this story elicited the loudest guffaws so far this weekend:

Joe and Sue Paterno have not seen a movie in a theater since “Titanic” and watch so little television that they were delighted to stumble upon a show this spring that they had not seen before.

“We discovered ‘M*A*S*H,’” Sue Paterno said, laughing.

She’s not the only one.

Ensconced in the Combine: Day 3

February 23rd, 2008 - 1:00pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

9:35 A.M. EST: A pleasant good morning to you from the Indiana Convention Center, where we await an onslaught of defenders that actually began late yesterday afternoon when Purdue defensive end/outside linebacker Cliff Avril met with media for a few minutes at one of the eight round tables spaced around the room.

LSU’s Glenn Dorsey, Virginia’s Chris Long and USC’s Sedrick Ellis are expected to be the marquee names speaking throughout the day.

9:42 A.M. EST: How to lose 35 minutes … YouTube searches for news bloopers.

9:57 A.M. EST: Giants general manager Jerry Reese is speaking. No players yet.

10:20 A.M. EST: Still waiting on player arrivals as this day’s activities lurch out to a more serene start than yesterday’s.  One should really try and embrace and cherish these spare sparse moments.  Even the hallways are relatively quiet, with the annual gymnastics competition that shares convention space with the Combine also taking its time in coming to life.

11:22 A.M. EST: A few defensive linemen have entered the room, most notably North Carolina defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer, whose stock rapidly rose before an injury during Monday afternoon North team practice at the Senior Bowl knocked him out of the rest of the week’s activities.
