Guitar Hero with Peyton Manning?

January 22nd, 2008 - 2:56pm by domonique_foxworthOther posts by domonique_foxworth

Let’s see, what have I been up to? Well I have been keeping my writing group going and we had some pretty good classes, some better ones than usual which is always fun. That is probably one of my focuses now that we are in the offseason and we are unfortunately not playing anymore, is spending time at the Boys and Girls Club. I still get up and work out in the mornings over at Dove Valley and everyday that I am over there I spend about an hour or more with my guys from the equipment room and go and support their basketball team. They were 2-1 before I started going to the games and now they are 0-2 since I have been going. So hopefully I am not bad luck.

I did get away for a little bit. I went to New York during the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and saw The Color Purple. It was ok, I am not much into musicals but my girl wanted to see it so I went with her. It was fun and as good as a musical could be.

Senior Bowl Day 2: Choosing to Play

January 22nd, 2008 - 12:34pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Much was made Monday over the recent withdrawals of Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm and Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan from this week’s activities, with Brohm removing himself from the game because of a lower leg injury. They joined Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long, LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey and Virginia defensive end Chris Long as seniors who bypassed this year’s Senior Bowl work.

But they are the exception. The vast majority of players don’t decline the chance for what amounts to a week-long job interview. Texas wide receiver Limas Sweed is one; he missed over half his senior season with ligament damage in his hand and said Monday that doctors advised him not to play. But he’s here anyhow.

For others, health isn’t a concern. Some can’t say ‘Yes’ to the Senior Bowl and its audience of team scouts and coaches fast enough.

“I accepted right away, because I didn’t know if maybe they would take it away from me,” said West Virginia fullback Owen Schmitt.

Yet the risk of injury looms over the entire week. While scouts, coaches and personnel executives would almost universally counsel a player to take part in this week’s work, their presence isn’t without some risk, which is linked arm-in-arm with the full-contact, full-speed work that makes these practices such a vital component of pre-draft evaluation.

Injuries are inevitable, as Schmitt’s roommate this week, UNLV linebacker Beau Bell found out first-hand Tuesday morning.

“I’m praying for (Bell) right now because he got rolled up on today in practice,” Schmitt said. “That’s one reason why guys don’t come.”

As for those that were here Tuesday morning for the North squad, a few notes …

… Michigan quarterback Chad Henne was first up among the passers, followed by Delaware’s Joe Flacco and USC’s John David Booty. Flacco seemed a little flustered on occasion, while Booty, displaying a classic drop-back style, was composed …

… The running backs got uncorked throughout the morning, with East Carolina’s Chris Johnson and Oklahoma State’s Dantrell Savage each turning in some solid gains …

… Schmitt lost his helmet in a collision while blocking …

… Several players took their turns on kickoff returns, including Johnson, Virginia Tech wide receiver Eddie Royal, Cal running back Justin Forsett, Colorado’s Terrence Wheatley and Indiana’s Tracy Porter.

Back with more in the blog, photos, a notebook and Broncos TV following the South team practice this afternoon … until then, vaya con Dios.

Senior Bowl Day 1: The Measure(ments) of a Man

January 21st, 2008 - 7:37pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Dre' Moore

Greetings from southern Alabama, where the shrimp is fresh, the footballs are flying and the breezes off the Gulf of Mexico are a tad nippy.

Day 1 of Senior Bowl week is in the books, and one can’t blame the players on both the North and South squads if they were thankful for finally stepping onto the practice fields and getting to work. It’s the famously hyper-competitive practices under the watch of hundreds of scouts and coaches that help make this week one of the more important junctions along the road to the NFL Draft. The players came to display their wares on the field, to work within the framework of hastily assembled teams and impress onlookers as unique individuals.

Yet at 10:45 a.m. Monday morning, the players were less individuals and more like commodities.

The annual weigh-in here in Mobile witnesses approximately 500 scouts and coaches crowded into a convention-center ballroom, with each player’s height and weight called out in carnival-barker style. Each of the 100 players stands on the stage to have his measurements taken, then walks down a path in the middle of the room, not unlike a model on a runway.

All this in their underwear.

Aloha!

Aloha Broncos Country!

The DBC departed on January 16, 2008 and we have been traveling around for the past several days hosting cheerleading clinics for the youth of military families, meeting our troops and performing our 2-hour show for various branches of the military. It is about 3:59 a.m. and we are waiting in the airport preparing to leave for Kwajalein — one of the Midway Islands, and according to many, “the best kept secret in the military.”

We have only been gone for a few days, but the adventures and the incredible people just continue rolling into our path. Our first youth cheerleading clinic was the Kekaha dancers in Kauai. Our clinics host a variety of age groups; we have met the most sincere, passionate, honest, and beautiful young souls since we have been out here — the children of our heroes. I could tell you specifics of everything we’ve done, but I don’t have an incredible amount of time.  Rather, I would like to tell you the overall impact that this trip has had in the first few days alone.

Conference Championships — A Few Thoughts

January 20th, 2008 - 11:34pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

And so we are given a rematch of a game that was so significant it aired on three networks – and ironically, said rematch will air on the one over-the-air broadcast partner frozen out of that televised trifecta of Dec. 29. If Fox wants to share the air, maybe the Dumont network could be revived for such a purpose.

NEW ENGLAND 21, SAN DIEGO 12

Perhaps it’s appropriate that the Patriots sealed their fourth Super Bowl trip of the decade and sixth in the last 22 years with a final score that was a palindrome. After all, any way one disseminates the unbeaten New England side – forwards, backwards, sideways, upside down – the conclusion is the same, one of greatness that until this year seemed unattainable.

But this game might have been their most unsightly to date, punctuated by three Tom Brady interceptions that all-but gift-wrapped the game to the visiting Chargers, who proceeded to return the gift by marching to four Nate Kaeding field goals and nothing more.

Conference Championship Preview

Chargers-Patriots

SAN DIEGO (13-5) AT NEW ENGLAND (17-0)

WHEN: Sunday, 1 p.m. MST
WHERE: Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass.
TV: CBS

Philip Rivers is resolute and defiant. Those two characteristics have made him seem a tad possessed in recent weeks — particularly in his rapport with Colts fans last Sunday at the RCA Dome — but are often to his credit, and in a different manifestation helped him become the No. 4 overall pick in the draft after a fairly phenomenal matriculation at North Carolina State.

But with the San Diego Union-Tribune reporting that he suffered a partial tear of his right anterior cruciate ligament, one wonders if his defiance might get the better of him.

What is more significant than Rivers’ official “doubtful” status is the fact that he was limited in practice. It’s tough enough to go against the Patriots with a full week of preparatory work. Can one really expect to be ready when that work is truncated?

San Diego’s best bet might be to go with Billy Volek, who led them to the game-winning score in the fourth quarter last week and played with a crispness that kept the Chargers’ offense at its typically productive pace in spite of the absences of LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates.

Heimerdinger Leaves for Titans

January 17th, 2008 - 3:54pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Mike Heimerdinger

Assistant head coach/quarterbacks Mike Heimerdinger is headed back to Tennessee.

The Titans hired Heimerdinger as their offensive coordinator on Thursday, one day after Head Coach Mike Shanahan gave Heimerdinger permission to interview with the Titans for the staff vacancy created by their dismissal of Norm Chow.

When Heimerdinger signed on as assistant head coach for the Broncos in February 2006, it marked a reunion as he had worked as wide receivers coach in Denver from 1995-99. His move to Tennessee is another reunion, as he worked as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2000-04 before spending a year with the New York Jets.

Reading is FUNdamental!

January 17th, 2008 - 3:43pm by pam_krotchkoOther posts by pam_krotchko

Wednesday, Miles, and Denver Broncos Cheerleader Melissa Aust and I were at Colfax Elementary to help the school kickoff their Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program.

The RIF program is designed to show children that reading isn’t just another subject at school and that reading can provide a child endless hours of fun and entertainment. With that concept in mind for our visit, Miles and Melissa did an interactive reading with the Miles Grand Adventure A to Z book for each grade level in the school.

The reading gives the students the opportunity to interact with Miles and Melissa and demonstrates the fun you can have with a book!

It’s Awards Season!

I’m not talking about the Golden Globes, or even postseason NFL honors (although I’ll talk about that too!) What I’m talking about is Forbes Horse of the Year! OK it’s not Horse of the Year, but they did make a list of the Top 10 Sports Mascots, and guess who’s on that list…Yes, the Philly Phanatic (He’s #1). Your favorite horse is on there too!

Forbes Cover

Check out the list and corresponding article here. They even mention the blog!

There’s a few questionable picks on the list. Only because a few aren’t even official team mascots. One is not even alive, it’s a stuffed doll. The NFL is represented by Rowdy (Cowboys) Sourdough Sam (49ers) and myself. They explain in the article that they use an equation called an index that takes into account of bunch of stuff I’m not quite sure I understand. Basically they ask people about sports mascots. If they know their names, their teams, how popular they are, how much they like them, etc. Then they take their responses and put them through this equation. Long story short is, across the nation people recognize the Broncos team and me and they like us!

How do you think the other mascots measure up?

P.S.

I forgot to talk about the postseason honors. I will be attending the Pro Bowl this year. There will be more info on this later, and possibly some blog entries from the Islands. Stay tuned…

Heimerdinger Granted Permission for Titans Interview

January 16th, 2008 - 11:59am by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Mike Heimerdinger

Assistant head coach/quarterbacks Mike Heimerdinger has been granted permission to interview with the Titans.

According to reports, the Titans requested permission Tuesday to interview Heimerdinger about their offensive coordinator position, a vacancy created when they dismissed Norm Chow, who guided Tennessee’s offense the past two seasons.

Heimerdinger guided the Tennessee offense from 2000-04 as offensive coordinator before leaving for a one-year stint with the New York Jets. He previously served as receivers coach for the Broncos from 1995-99 and returned as assistant head coach in February 2006 following the departure of Gary Kubiak for the head-coaching position with the Houston Texans.

“The Tennessee Titans have requested consent to talk to Mike Heimerdinger about their offensive coordinator position, and we have granted them permission,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said in a statement.
