Looking Back; Looking Ahead to the Vikings

December 28th, 2007 - 10:34am by mark_cooperOther posts by

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone. It’s a short week to Minnesota and I’ve already put the Bolts game behind me and I hope you did too. Sorry for delay this week getting this up since it’s Friday. Christmas with the kids and family and the snow shoveling and snow blowing took a little time. I hope you enjoyed the holiday and are looking forward to a New Year.

Yep, it was tough loss Monday night and I was a little shocked at the way we played. That was the first time Jay Cutler really got frustrated. Welcome to the NFL. There’s going to be games like that; it happens. Give credit where credit is due: the Bolts are a good football team.

To tell the truth, I enjoyed watching LT run the ball. Even when I was in the league, I marveled at Barry Sanders, Earl Campbell, Walter Payton and many others when we played them. Of course I didn’t want them to have a great game against us but I was still a fan of great athletic talent. When you play at that level you get up to play against those types of players.

The Bolts defense really brought the pass rush. The O-line was getting tested and that was the first time all year I saw both tackles “open the gate.” What that means is this: as they take a pass set they don’t keep pushing in a 45-degree angle as the rusher comes upfield and they drop their outside foot and that “opens the gate” and their protection collapses and the defender turns the corner on the QB. That in turn makes the QB feel the pressure off his shoulder and step up into the pocket.

Snowed In; Cutler Returns

December 27th, 2007 - 3:27pm by AndrewOther posts by

Snowy Scene

A second snowstorm in three days blitzed through Dove Valley and the Front Range on Thursday. The first one didn’t affect the Broncos’ work one iota. The second one, however, forced them inside — and not to the nearby South Suburban Sports Dome, which was booked for a youth event.

With the Broncos’ usual inclement-weather option scrapped, they had to settle for working inside the team’s conditioning facility, on a field that is regulation width but is barely 30 yards in length.

“It was more of a walk-through, obviously,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “But I think we got done what we needed to get done.”

The practice was the Broncos’ first inside the truncated indoor field at their facility since Week 16 of the 2006 season, when a near-blizzard kept the team at their facility.

“A bubble (at team headquarters) would be nice today. I was going to fight those little kids off today over at the bubble down the street, but I decided not to,” Shanahan deadpanned.

The weather not only forced the team inside, but postponed the scheduled audition of punters. That will now take place Friday.

“We had a hard time getting those punters in,” Shanahan said.

While the team’s search for a new punter stalled like a low-pressure center over the Texas panhandle, the progress of Jay Cutler did not, as he returned to full practice Thursday after missing Wednesday’s work with a sore knee.

“He’ll be ready to go (Sunday),” Shanahan said.

Wide receiver Javon Walker also returned to full practice, while Ian Gold, Daniel Graham and Brandon Stokley were sidelined.

Cutler ‘A Little Limited’ But Expects to Play Sunday

Jay Cutler

Jay Cutler was back on the practice field Wednesday as the Broncos returned to work 37 1/2 hours after the humbling 23-3 defeat at San Diego, but the left knee that he hurt during the game left him “a little limited” as the Broncos went through a two-hour session on a clear, frigid day at team headquarters.

“I’ll be ready to roll (Thursday),” he said.

After being sacked just 17 times in the season’s first 13 games, Cutler has been tagged for nine sacks in the last two games — both of which saw tight end Daniel Graham hindered by a high ankle sprain he suffered on the opening offensive series of Denver’s 31-13 loss at Houston.

Between the hits Cutler has absorbed the last two weeks and the grind of playing the lengthiest season of his football life, Cutler acknowledged he was “worn down” physically, independent of the now ailing knee for which he must compensate.

“(The knee) is a little banged up,” Cutler said, “but I’ll be ready by Sunday, no problem.”

Cutler was sacked four times in the first half Monday night and was hurried on numerous other occasions. On three occasions Cutler kept the football and ran, gaining a team-leading 42 yards — a healthy 14.0-yards-per-carry average.

Cutler has not missed a start since being promoted onto the first team in Week 13 of the 2006 season.

ALSO OF NOTE:

Graham, wide receiver Brandon Stokley and linebacker Ian Gold all did not practice Wednesday with their injuries … Wide receiver Javon Walker saw limited work … Defensive end John Engelberger (shoulder), safety John Lynch (back), defensive tackle Steven Harris (knee) and center Chris Myers (ankle) were all listed on the injury report but practiced fully.

Disappointing Season Wraps Up

Sometimes you just cannot sugarcoat your disappointment, and the 2007 National Football League is one of those situations for the Denver Broncos.

Our franchise is a proud one which has sustained long periods of great success, but this season is a low ebb.

Everywhere you go, you hear people comment about what a bad season it has been.

But that is just a reflection of how much people care, or how much a part of the Denver community the Broncos are. If fans did not care, THAT would really be disappointing.

Ringing in 2008

December 26th, 2007 - 10:32am by cindy_gallowayOther posts by

Upon opening my e-mail this morning, I was very excited to see the construction bids come in for the Darrent Williams Memorial Teen Center (thank you Will Bussard of OZ Architecture for your hand in this) and to know that as of January 9th, 2008, we will have our construction partner in place and the work will begin . . . . bring in the New Year.

As you all know from past blogs, this project means so much to all of us in the organization and to the Williams’ family and we certainly know it will have an amazingly positive impact on the young people who will be members of the Center.  Particulary in the week leading up to the anniversary of Darrent’s death, it is extremely important for us to have this positive outlet to focus on and to know that something truly positive will happen in our community from a place of tragedy.

Ed Dwight, the sculptor who is working on the bronze of Darrent to be displayed outside the Teen Center entrance, has started the first casting and some of our kids from the Broncos Boys and Girls Club have been over to his studio to learn about the process.  This is also very exciting.

Ernster Waived Wednesday Morning

December 26th, 2007 - 9:48am by AndrewOther posts by

As quickly as Paul Ernster returned to the Broncos, he finds himself outside of the locker room once again.

Denver waived the punter and kickoff specialist Wednesday morning, barely 36 hours after he struggled in the loss to San Diego.

Ernster’s night started badly, as he shanked a 17-yard punt that flew out of bounds at the Denver 44-yard-line, setting the Chargers up in excellent field position for their first touchdown. His second punt covered 59 yards after it bounced and was downed at the San Diego 1, but his final three punts traveled 33, 38 and 31 yards.

“One little thing and it goes to hell,” Ernster said in the moments after the 23-3 loss at Qualcomm Stadium.

“My timing was off. Punting is all timing. It was off tonight. The whole country saw that. I’ve just got to come back and work hard.

“Hopefully I’ll be here this week and get a chance to prove myself again, because you all have seen me punt. You know that’s not like me. I’ll get back and work hard and come out next week and show them that it was a fluke.”

But after being waived Wednesday, next week won’t be in the cards for the third-year product of Northern Arizona.

A Tough Year Winds Down

December 26th, 2007 - 12:14am by mike_riceOther posts by

Sometimes there just isn’t much to say. After Monday night’s loss to the Chargers, I couldn’t do much except shrug my shoulders and say that 2007 has just not been the Broncos year. Profound, I know.

Signs pointed to this long before the loss to the Chargers. Signs pointed in that direction even before the Broncos officially fell out of playoff contention the Sunday after they lost to the Texans.

I’ll offer no excuses. The Broncos have been inconsistent much of the year and they simply haven’t played well enough to win. The standard they set and articulate at the beginning of every year is to make a run at the Super Bowl title. That’s not my message, it’s theirs.

We all know that in today’s NFL it is easier to say that than to do it. That’s no knock against the Broncos, it’s just a reflection on the relative strength of the league. The fact is that teams typically go through down years or even cycles. There was a time not that long ago that the Patriots weren’t too good.

For those who call themselves Broncos fans, the lean years have been few and far between since Mike Shanahan became head coach. I know, the naysayers will point to one playoff win since John Elway retired and use that as evidence that the Broncos need a new head coach. To that I say, “Come let us reason together.”

The bottom line is that the Broncos have been more than competitive in most years. Obviously this season has been an exception to that. But this marks just the second time in Coach Shanahan’s 13 seasons as head coach that the team will finish under .500. I’ll take that any time and anyone who wouldn’t should have his head examined.

Even when the Broncos win games, I hear the calls for Coach Shanahan to be replaced. I know that’s part of the territory and he does, too. But I must be honest and tell you how tired I am of that.

Not everything he does works out perfectly. Then again, I make plenty of mistakes on my job, as does everyone.

Do the Broncos have things to fix? Of course they do. And let’s hope they can do what is necessary to get a better result in 2008.

I guess what I’m getting at is the importance of perspective. While stumbling this year, the Broncos have given us quite a bit of good football over the last 10-15 years. Somewhere, somehow that should be acknowledged even in the midst of a frustrating season.

As always, thank you for reading. I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas.

Best,
Mike

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays to everyone.

I wish everybody a happy and fun and safe holiday season. I will keep it short since it is the holiday season and I don’t want to take up everybody’s time.

Hopefully you’ll be able to spend it with your family making good holiday memories. I have a lot of great holiday memories myself. I remember being a kid trying to sneak down to open the presents before Christmas and always getting caught. Those were the good old days. Christmas doesn’t quite have the same excitement as it did back then but it’s still a lot of fun. I still enjoy the season.

Broncos-Chargers: Fourth-Quarter Notes

December 24th, 2007 - 8:28pm by AndrewOther posts by

7:27 P.M. PST: Broncos move to the San Diego 37 … and Jay Cutler runs up to the San Diego 16 on the next play, but there’s a flag down at the San Diego 30, an area around which Cutler ran … the penalty is on San Diego, so it is declined.

7:29 P.M. PST: Denver’s offense showing some vigor and verve on this series … Matt Lepsis is back in the game.

7:30 P.M. PST: Third-and-2 at the San Diego 3 … Cecil Sapp gets the call and picks up close to two yards, but it’s ruled a yard … Fourth-and-a few inches now … and Matt Wilhelm corrals Sapp as he receives the handoff.

7:35 P.M. PST: San Diego goes three-and-out after taking over at its 3-yard-line.

7:36 P.M. PST: I will be working on the game recap throughout this quarter, so my updates will be a little less frequent … please feel free to discuss the proceedings in the space below.

6:40 P.M. PST: Another Broncos possession goes by the wayside, as Luis Castillo bats down a Jay Cutler pass, allowing the Chargers to take over at their 49-yard-line.

6:44 P.M. PST: The Broncos force a three-and-out, and will regain possession at their 14-yard-line after a Glenn Martinez fair catch with 6:18 left.

7:52 P.M. PST: After an exchange of punts (I sound like the late Lindsey Nelson narrating Notre Dame highlights), the Broncos take over at their 13-yard-line with 3:55 left in the game.

7:59 p.m. PST: And it’s all about running out the clock now … good night from Southern California, and merry Christmas.

Broncos-Chargers: Third-Quarter Notes

December 24th, 2007 - 7:44pm by AndrewOther posts by

6:44 P.M. PST: Matt Prater’s first kickoff as a Bronco sails 64 yards … but San Diego will start their first second-half series at its 16 after a holding penalty. LaDainian Tomlinson is back in the game.

6:45 P.M. PST: San Diego on the move, up to its 39-yard-line … we have now seen all three Chargers runners on this drive as Michael Turner and Darren Sproles have each checked in.

6:46 P.M. PST: Nice tackle by D.J. Williams on Darren Sproles.

6:47 P.M. PST: Another third-down conversion by San Diego … Philip Rivers finds Antonio Gates, who had a nice little shove to the chest of Dre’ Bly as the ball was en route … no call, and the Chargers are at the Denver 37.

6:49 P.M. PST: Chargers now at the Denver 20.

6:51 P.M. PST: Broncos are challenging a Vincent Jackson reception at the Denver 10.

6:54 P.M. PST: The reception is upheld. San Diego has first and goal.

6:55 P.M. PST: Two carries to the right side pick up the score … the first one to Tomlinson and the second one to Turner. A flag flies, however … and the Turner touchdown will be nullified, much to the consternation of the crowd and the person who chooses the stadium’s music, who plays lyrics that go, “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch.”

6:56 P.M. PST: Touchdown, San Diego … Rivers finds Chris Chambers across the middle in space … Chambers was hit at the 2-yard-line but flew over the goal line for the score. The drive chewed up 7:04 of the clock, covered 84 yards and took 11 plays to execute … Denver now trails, 23-0.

7:02 P.M. PST: Denver in desperate need of a scoring drive now … The Broncos began this series with 55 yards from scrimage.

7:03 P.M. PST: Brandon Marshall with a 15-yard catch to move the Broncos to their 49-yard-line.

7:04 P.M. PST: Broncos now in third-and-8 at the San Diego 49 … Jay Cutler finds Marshall again on third down … he springs forward as though he were flung by slingshot, leaving a defender flat-footed before finally falling at the San Diego 21 … Broncos have their deepest foray into Chargers territory since their opening series.

7:07 P.M. PST: Cutler looked for Tony Scheffler across the middle … Looked like there was contact on Scheffler before the football came in, but there was no call … Clinton Hart gets the interception.

7:09 P.M. PST: Chargers start at their 8-yard-line after a penalty at the end of the runback.

7:11 P.M. PST: Two plays later, a fumble … Marcus Thomas pounces on the loose football that Billy Volek lost on an odd attempt at a handoff to Michael Turner.

7:13 P.M. PST: A handoff for one yard, two incompletions and then Matt Lepsis hits the grass in obvious pain.

7:14 P.M. PST: Lepsis is sitting up now, but is still being treated on the field … now the medical staff helps him to his feet.

7:14 P.M. PST: Lepsis leaves the field under his own power.

7:15 P.M. PST: Jason Elam hits the 23-yard field goal … Broncos now trail 23-3 with 2:47 left in the quarter.

7:18 P.M. PST: Prater’s second Broncos kickoff sails 64 yards … and is returned 25 yards by Darren Sproles to the San Diego 31.

7:19 P.M. PST: San Diego goes three-and-out in its second series with Volek at the helm.

7:21 P.M. PST: Broncos take over at their 19 … Cutler finds Marshall for 10 yards and a first down on the first play of the series.

7:24 P.M. PST: A nice run by Cutler to the San Diego 47 closes the quarter.
