Ernster, Lang: “Friends of the Program”

August 29th, 2007 - 10:45am by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

I first learned about Paul Ernster through a Google search.

It was the seventh round of the 2005 draft. The Broncos had just selected Ernster, a player of whom my knowledge was limited. He wasn’t at the Scouting Combine, and I don’t follow Big Sky Conference football (sorry, all you fans of Montana, Weber State, Portland State and Northern Colorado, but my antenna points south and east), so I was completely unaware of the exploits of this multipurpose kicking specialist from Northern Arizona.

I hopped onto Google, since the media relations department would have him on speakerphone in a few minutes for an interview, and I wanted to ask an educated question or two. I wanted stats, pictures, newspaper articles — anything, really, to clue us in on the newest Bronco’s background.

What I found was a college project.

As it turned out, Ernster was quite the Web guru, designing and maintaining sites for his alma mater, Northern Arizona University. The college-project site was something of a joke; he had to create a fictional background story about himself, so he described himself a preteen genius who was abducted and forced into a Japanese biotechnology weapon development program at the age of 12.

Upon reading this, my eyes bulged. I didn’t realize the story was fabrication, I simply furrowed my brow and asked, “Who the hell is this guy?”

Turned out, it was a guy looking for a good grade.

“I just put a bunch of stuff on that would catch someone’s eye,” he later said. “I got an ‘A.’”

But what was real — besides his grade — was his work for the university, which he likely would have continued had the Broncos not called him on draft weekend, something he admitted was unexpected.

“I’d probably still be programming right now if I didn’t get a shot with the Broncos,” he said.

We would talk shop regularly, since he actually understood what I was talking about when it came to the back end of the Web site. Frankly, he probably knew more than I did about how things would work in the network of connections and servers like the ones that power DenverBroncos.com. Most of my knowledge of the Web is straight-up HTML, going back to ancient college days (well, ancient by Internet standards) 13 years ago when I began writing in HTML code and first became absorbed in the Internet.

And you saw Ernster’s name on this site fairly regularly in Q&As and stories. He always had time for a conversation and an interview, and was one of the friendliest people to pass through here. In his time with the Broncos, Ernster was — as we like to say around here — a “friend of the program.” ^^

So too was Kenard Lang. But he was a friend of anyone in the laptop-and-notepad set. Always loquacious, occasionally outrageous, caustically blunt and capable of answering any question in a manner you could not have imagined. He didn’t speak the King’s English, per se, but his sentiments were as clear as the skies often are above Dove Valley.

Lang, as a Bronco, was not just a friend of our program, but of every program that aired focusing upon the Broncos — beginning with his first interview, when he spoke of all his fellow ex-Browns who left for Denver a year before he did.

“I’m just like that little kid trying to chase that school bus going down the street,” Lang said. “I saw them going and I was like, ‘Oh, why are you leaving?’”

Lang, Ernster and eight others were waived Tuesday. One of them, Teyo Johnson, could be back on injured reserve; he, like Lang and Ernster and Quentin Harris and some of the others who were released, was a “friend of the program.” With nearly all of them, if you do a Google search, you might find something from our site that tells their story — from how Quentin Harris spent his time out of football in 2006 to David Kircus’ work at Subway (which would eventually take on a life of its own after the piece ran) to Demetrin Veal’s world travels to David Terrell comparing himself to Terrell Owens, Keyshawn Johnson and Randy Moss.

The players waived Tuesday might not have shown enough to be on the 53-man roster this year. But their stories — unusual, head-scratching, hilarious and thought-provoking — remain. And hopefully that’s what we gave these guys — a little something more on Google for people to learn about them as they take their next steps, wherever they may lead.

^^ — Yes, for some reason, Kyle Sonneman and I are both fans of the film Blue Chips, which combines balsa-wood line readings from Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, Shaquille “Kazaam” O’Neal and Matt “Whatever Happened to Him?” Nover with Nick Nolte channeling Bobby Knight, an over-the-top performance from the late J.T. Walsh and, of course, the appearance of one of America’s finest living thespians, Ed O’Neill. (Sonneman just chimed in to say that O’Neill is “the greatest actor of our generation.”)

Until next time … vaya con Dios.

Smith Placed on Regular Season PUP List

August 28th, 2007 - 5:10pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

The Broncos announced their first round of cuts late Thursday afternoon, but the biggest news of the afternoon came with concurrent word that Rod Smith will start the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

Smith, who underwent hip surgery six months ago, has been in rehabilitation ever since. He was seen running following training-camp practices; however, he only began running in late July after being confined to working out in a pool in previous months.

Placement on the PUP list buys him and the Broncos 12 weeks before making a determination whether to move him to the 53-man roster or place him on injured reserve.

A player must remain sidelined as PUP for the first six weeks of the regular season. Smith then is eligible to practice for three weeks before a final decision is made — but the Broncos do not have to make that choice until three weeks after the initial six-week PUP stint concludes.

This means the Broncos actually have until Week 12 to determine whether Smith could play before being faced with the choice of moving him to the 53-man roster or injured reserve.

The latter option, of course, would end his season.

Last year, Domenik Hixon was designated as PUP after a protracted recovery from a fractured metatarsal bone; he would end up practicing for three weeks — as is permitted when placed on the PUP list — before moving to injured reserve.

The cuts were as expected based upon which players were absent from practice Tuesday, as reported earlier this afternoon.

Running back Cedric Cobbs … punter/kickoff specialist Paul Ernster … fullback Troy Fleming … safety Quentin Harris … tight end Teyo Johnson … wide receiver David Kircus … defensive end Kenard Lang … kicker Brandon Pace … wide receiver David Terrell … defensive tackle Demetrin Veal.

The Broncos also announced that Johnson, who played for the Hamburg Sea Devils of NFL Europa this spring, will be placed on injured reserve if he clears waivers. Fellow NFL Europa allocations Doug Neinhuis and Lamont Reid — neither of whom saw a snap of practice time this summer — were placed on the reserve/NFL Europa list for injuries they incurred during their spring overseas. Nienhuis injured his knee, while Reid suffered a pectoral-muscle injury.

Sign Off Ideas, Roster Cuts, and Me as a Wide Receiver?

August 28th, 2007 - 3:14pm by domonique_foxworthOther posts by domonique_foxworth

To start off with, I’ll be at the Helio store at 4 o’clock on Saturday just doing autograph stuff there, so if anybody wants to come meet up, I would love to meet some of the blog people. I met some of the people on the blog at camp and it’s pretty cool. I like to be able to put a face with the screen name.

About the sign offs, I thought there were some really good ones, really good examples of funny sign offs and some good ideas. One of them that I thought was funny because I’m a fan of “Anchorman” was #80fan’s, “Stay classy, Denver.” I don’t know if I could use it though.  It doesn’t fit my personality, but it was funny. It got a good laugh out of me.

And also, micahpexa’s suggestion to use “All ready” in remembrance of D-Will, which I thought was a great idea. It’s taken on so many different meanings and it keeps D-Will a part of our team and a part of this blog, so I think I like that one also.

Broncobacker12 suggested that I use a different quote each week, inspiring, insightful, motivating, those type of things or whatever type of mood I’m in, which I thought was a great idea, except for the fact that then I have to research some sort of quote every week. So I think we’re going to go with a mixture of all the ideas. I might throw an “All ready” in there every now and then or a “Stay classy,” and if I’m in the mood, a college frame of mind where I feel like researching and finding some good quote, then I’ll throw one of those in there every now and then.

Ernster Among Tuesday Departures

August 28th, 2007 - 2:33pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Earlier in the morning, I wrote about the preseason numbers comparison between punters Paul Ernster and Todd Sauerbrun.

Bad timing.

By the time the Broncos took the field Tuesday, Ernster was not present. Nor was safety and fellow special-teamer Quentin Harris, as they joined eight other non-injured players who missed both practices the last two days.

“Paul’s worked extremely hard and hopefully he’ll catch on with another team,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “Theres not very many people that can both kick off and punt, so he brings a lot to the table.”

Ernster’s departure leaves Todd Sauerbrun to handle punts and kickoffs.

“I’m just happy with the way it turned out and I’m thankful for the opportunity Mike Shanahan and Scott O’Brien gave me,” Sauerbrun said. I’m very appreciative and I’m going to do the best to make the most of it.”

Stats Pause: Punts, Kickoffs and a Quarterback

August 28th, 2007 - 9:22am by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Bon giorno from Colorado with a couple of statistical nuggets that I was going to get to last night before I got detoured into some behind-the-scenes site work …

TALKING PUNTERS: We touched upon the punting/kickoff competition in the Saturday night pregame entry, and here’s how Paul Ernster and Todd Sauerbrun now stand statistically with one game remaining:

KICKOFFS:

AVERAGE LENGTH: Ernster 72.4 yards, Sauerbrun 69.5 yards (note — I counted the actual distance of Ernster’s game-opening wallop against Cleveland, which was approximately 85 yards, as it landed five yards behind the touchline in the back of the end zone).
TOUCHBACK PERCENTAGE: Ernster 50.0 percent, Sauerbrun 50.0 percent.
AVERAGE DRIVE-START POSITION AFTER KICKOFFS: Ernster DEN 25.5; Sauerbrun DEN 26.0.
SHORTEST KICKOFFS: Ernster 63 yards, Sauerbrun 61 yards.

Another Cheyenne Road Trip?

August 27th, 2007 - 5:17pm by MilesOther posts by Miles

Yes…kind of. This time it was to Cheyenne Wells, CO, which is just down the road (I-70) a little bit (about 3 hours east). Over the next couple of weeks we are heading to the four corners of Broncos Country to officially “plant the flag.” We’ve selected a few places that really embody and represent Broncos Country and are celebrating with the citizens. We bring with us the Super Bowl Trophies, Alumni, Cheerleaders, and of course…ME!

We leave them with their own Broncos Country flag that they will fly proudly on game day. We also have the people sign a flag that we bring back with us and display here at the stadium. Our first stop was a great one! Cheyenne Wells has about 1,200 people in it, and I swear that most of them came out to greet us. They even let the schools out of their first day to come show their Broncos pride. We met a ton of great people including the Mayor of Cheyenne Wells, Monte Baker.

Calendar Release Party Wrap Up!

August 27th, 2007 - 4:39pm by teresa_shearOther posts by teresa_shear

First of all, thank you to all of the amazing Broncos fans that came out to support the release of our 2008 Calendar and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The party was a huge success with over 500 guests. This was our largest turnout to date and I’d like to thank everyone at INVESCO Field and in our Community Development Department for making it possible for us to have this event at the stadium. The fans had the ability to interact with the cheerleaders and get autographs on every calendar page, take photos with the cheerleaders and enjoy the beautiful new Club Lounge.

We also had over 70 guests from Susan G. Komen for the Cure. It was so inspirational to meet the survivors and some of the women and men that were the top fundraisers from 2006. Lisa Pevateaux, our DBC Alumni Cheerleader, was also present with her husband and 18-month-old son.

I am proud to say that our 2008 Calendar Release Party raised over $15,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, putting our DBC Team Lisa in first place for fundraising! We were actually in first place before the party as well, but now we are going to be hard to catch! I will keep updating everyone on our progress as we get closer to our Oct. 7 Race and Alumni Halftime Show. Our new goal is $25,000 and I know we can do it!

Thank you again to all the amazing Broncos fans that always come out and support out team. You are the best! There is no other place I want to be than right here in Broncos Country!

Concrete Charlie

Now, you have to admit, that’s some nickname.

Unfortunately, with each passing day, fewer fans know to whom that moniker applies.

On Saturday night at our preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, someone mispronounced Concrete Charlie’s last name.

When I made the correction, the party just said, “Whatever. Hey, is he in the Hall of Fame?”

Yes, he is. And I certainly understand that the most recent breed of fans and players might have some lack of awareness here.

Henry, Hall, Bell Back in Uniform

August 27th, 2007 - 2:40pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Easily the most encouraging sign for the Broncos at their practice Monday afternoon was the presence of a full corps at running back, with Travis Henry, Mike Bell and Andre Hall each returning to uniform.

None of the tailbacks practiced last week, and Hall has missed the last two weeks — plus the final two sessions of training camp — with a right-hamstring injury. While all three were on the field Monday, Henry will not play Thursday night, as Head Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed Monday that he will hold the starters out of the preseason finale with Arizona, just as he has in other preseason-closing games the last six years.

Henry, however, doesn’t believe he needs another game to work back into speed.

“I think this week alone should get me ready for the opener,” he said. “I think this is a big week for me. I’ll get a chance to run with the scout team and get my legs under me and by next week I should be ready to go.”

Moving Forward

August 27th, 2007 - 10:41am by cindy_gallowayOther posts by cindy_galloway

Last Friday was one of the more unique and special experiences our office has had as community collaboration goes.

As has been introduced in past blogs, one of our special tributes in the works to honor the memory of Darrent Williams is a life-size bronze sculpture that will be in the courtyard entrance to our new Darrent Williams Memorial Teen Center adjacent to the Denver Broncos Boys and Girls Club in Montbello.  This project has brought us in contact with a wonderful man who lives here locally but is world renowned for his art—Ed Dwight.

Ed’s first career was that of an astronaut during the Kennedy Administration, but sculpture has always been his true passion.  His works are all over the world, including the Hank Aaron sculpture in Atlanta, Miles Davis in the Caribbean, Frederick Douglass in Virginia and Martin Luther King right here in City Park.  Ed will now ad the sculpture of Darrent Williams to his works and we are thrilled to work with such a talent on this very meaningful legacy project for the Broncos.
