Here We Go

July 30th, 2007 - 8:09am by mike_riceOther posts by mike_rice

Here we go. Let the football season begin.

Broncos training camp started this weekend and the cacophony of opinions will undoubtedly follow shortly. We all think—actually, we all know– we have the answers for everything orange and blue.

I’m making a pact with myself this year. Call it a New Year’s resolution for the new football season: I resolve to enjoy each day of the season and remind myself that I’m just an interested observer whose opinions don’t really mean too much.

Ahhhhh. It feels good to exhale. The pressure is off.

Training Camp Day 1: Afternoon Session

July 29th, 2007 - 8:13pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Marquay McDaniel
Here’s where you really start to learn about players — when the shoulder pads go on. The Broncos didn’t put on the full pads, practicing in shorts, but placing the shoulder pads under their jerseys altered the tempo and tenor of the day’s second practice.

“The first day in pads, it takes a while (to get accustomed),” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said after the hour-and-a-half session.

“It’s not natural. You haven’t worked with pads for a while, and it’s going to take a number of days before we feel comfortable, “That’s why you come back here and have training camp — to get in football shape.”

“Pads do make a difference — big time,” said Kenard Lang, who ran with the second team Sunday afternoon after working on the second and third units in the morning session. “When you don’t have pads, you can’t be as physical as you like because you don’t want to hurt (the player you hit).”

NOTES FROM THE AFTERNOON:

ATTENDANCE REPORT: Quite a few veterans are on the one-practice-per-day schedule, a group that Sunday included Brandon Stokley, Matt Lepsis, Tom Nalen and Sam Adams. Ebenezer Ekuban was in uniform but didn’t see the field during the team work, which consumed the majority of the afternoon session. Fifteen-year veteran John Lynch took part in both of the day’s practices.

Training Camp Day 1: Morning Session

July 29th, 2007 - 1:39pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

UPDATED 1:39 P.M. MDT
Jim Bates
Never before have I heard a coach excoriate his players for not celebrating enough. But never before today had I watched assistant head coach/defense Jim Bates conduct a training camp session.

It was midway through nine-on-seven drills, and I was standing about 75 yards away from the action, manning the east practice field where the cornerbacks and wide receivers were concurrently going through one-on-one work. But even from that far away, the still was shattered by a gunnery sergeant-like voice bellowing from the opposite field. Bates was angry — not at a missed play, but at a lack of enthusiasm from his defense after Sam Adams forced a fumble.

The crowd of 1,904 — a Dove Valley-camp-opening record — responded with its loudest roar of the day.

“They did react, huh?” Bates said. He was so focused on the moment that he barely noticed.

Marcus Thomas Quite an Athlete

July 29th, 2007 - 1:36pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

Sunday was our first day of twice-a-day practices for our 2007 training camp, and before the morning practice fourth-round draft choice Marcus Thomas, defensive tackle from Florida, displayed the kind of athletic ability rarely seen among football players, and unheard of among players in excess of 300 pounds.

Just prior to the team calisthenics, Thomas took off his jersey and performed a backflip for his new teammates, drawing “oohs” and “ahs” among press, fans, and teammates.

Sunday Morning Moves …

July 29th, 2007 - 8:22am by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Kenny Peterson’s time away from the Broncos lasted barely 16 hours.

The Broncos re-signed him on Sunday morning amidst a quartet of roster moves that were announced about 15 minutes before the first training-camp practice. Denver also signed linebacker Wesly Mallard, placed absent defensive end Carlos Hall on the reserve/did not report list and waived linebacker Eddie Moore, although the team announced that Moore will revert to the Broncos’ injured reserve list if he clears waivers. That, however, would end his 2007 season before it began.

More to come later today … time to hustle downstairs to practice.

And So It Begins …

July 29th, 2007 - 7:54am by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Greetings from a gorgeous morning at Broncos headquarters. Seeing the majesty of the day’s dawn makes me want to become a morning person … eh, maybe not.

The Broncos’ first practice will begin at 8:30 a.m., without Tony Scheffler, Brandon Marshall and Rod Smith in uniform, but with splendid conditions, as temperatures will rise from the upper 60s into the mid 70s during the course of the two-hour session.

Most of the time, this blog will be the first section of the site to be updated, with reports from every practice and updates to follow between practices. Bookmark or subscribe to the RSS feed to make sure you’re always in touch with the latest from Dove Valley.

Live from Shanahan’s Press Conference

July 28th, 2007 - 1:03pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

12:36 P.M. MDT: “I actually feel that after OTAs we’re ready to play a game,” he said when addressing the progress the team made during its 15 days of on-field work.

12:37 P.M. MDT: Although the football landscape has changed, the on-field work at training camp remains evident in Shanahan’s eyes. “You get back in football shape, but there’s nothing like putting pads on … until you put the pads on and get in football shape, (being ready) doesn’t come naturally,” he said.

12:38 P.M. MDT: “You have to be smart on how much contact you have … We don’t tackle, but there’s a lot of run drills and nine-on-seven and one-on-one where the contact’s there but you’re not bringing people to the ground.”

TD Into Ring of Fame

July 27th, 2007 - 1:54pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

As most fans know by news reports, today running back Terrell Davis was voted into the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame by the selection committee, which includes owner Pat Bowlen, former GM John Beake, former defensive coordinator Joe Collier, and former play-by-play voice Larry Zimmer.

I know that everyone agrees that this is a great selection, and in my opinion it is one of the best selections ever made by the group.

TD stands as a “great’s great.”  One of those guys whom even the greatest players look up to.

Just yesterday Curtis Martin retired after a great and long career, and he had over 14,000 yards rushing.

But nothing compares to four things which Terrell did, and which NO ONE ELSE IN FOOTBALL HISTORY has ever done.

T.D.: An Appreciation

July 27th, 2007 - 1:24pm by AndrewOther posts by Andrew

Upon learning of Friday’s announcement that Terrell Davis would become the newest member of the Ring of Fame, I couldn’t help but look back at the day he walked away — Aug. 20, 2002. A night earlier, Davis walked onto the field in a Broncos uniform for the final time, listening to one more standing ovation from the home fans before he would leave the field for good as a result of knee injuries — the only opposition he could not outrun.

When Davis said farewell, I had only been in Denver a month, barely enough time to appreciate what Davis accomplished here — aside from viewing from points afar such as Tampa, Seattle, Connecticut and Ft. Lauderdale. But T.D. was so exquisitely productive that you didn’t have to be at Mile High Stadium to appreciate his. accomplishments.

So rather than trying to write something new today about Davis, here’s what I wrote the day he held his final press conference as a Bronco. I think it still applies — except for the fact that my desk has moved.

Thursday, July 26

July 26th, 2007 - 4:06pm by jim_saccomanoOther posts by jim_saccomano

Training camp starts in two days, and it is a very exciting time for us, as it is everywhere in pro football.

This is the time of year when every team is undefeated, and very excited about prospects for the new year.  We have made dramatic moves, as all fans know, and this is the time when the players finally put on helmets and pads (sometimes) and get after it on the practice field.

Mike Shanahan runs a strict meritocracy.  The best players play.  Regardless of how low or high he was drafted, how big or small, the right to play is always determined by performance on the field.
